Van, what are your thoughts on in-game lines/betting. I understand the knife cuts both ways, but there are often exaggerated line swings with in-game lines that give a lot of value/margin of safety compared to closing line, especially early in the contest. |

yea I didn't mean their whole game was bad, just their finishing. Maybe i'm jaded b/c I had them in the Ecuador game and then against Nigeria, but i felt even today they just weren't sharp in the final third. but i agree, better team won today, and french still looked good overall during the WC (esp compared to 2010 )

Definitely nothing to contest. Belgium dominated early and often. As a US fan of course it would've been sooo sweet to steal the game or force PKs, and they had a couple chances to do so, but the better side definitely progressed.

I'm sorry, I misread your post. Yes, Chile def the best 2nd place team

They beat an average Croatian team, were held to a 0-0 draw vs the offensively challenged (you seemed to agree) Mexico, and then beat up on Cameroon, arguably the worst team in the WC. And Chile isn't the undoubted 2nd best team in the knockout stage. Who is your #1? You'd have to put Chile ahead everyone except one of Brazil, Dutch, France, or Germany? Chile lost to Dutch and Brazil and I would take Germany over them for sure. That makes them arguably 4th. Sure Colombia hasn't played any elite teams either, but they've excelled against seemingly equal competition in Greece, Japan, IC, and Uruguay. I agree, Colombia are going to be taking a big step up in terms of individual talent, but Brazil as a team just hasn't looked great.

And yea duh, +1 must take, but based on my opinion Brazil +230 to not make the semi's has good value

Brazil hasn't played a truly great game all tournament yet all I hear and read is next game Brazil will be different, more focused, more motivated blah blah. They have flashed brilliance, mostly through Neymar, in every game they've played, but they have also played some garbage/error prone defense in terrible spaces in every game, and that won't cut it to win a WC. If they aren't playing at a high enough level as a team to win the WC, then they can go out at any round, so why not vs the hottest team in the tourney. If Colombia gets to +1 at decent odds it'll be almost impossible to pass.

pretty sure that the US also scrimmaged against Belgium when they first got down to Brazil for the World Cup. Would be interesting if anyone could find any articles about that, although doubtful since it was "closed"

You have to strike while the iron is hot. The iron is red hot. US/Portugal write-up!!!!

how can you say in point 2 that van's points are conditional b/c no one knows what the US head coach will do and then say in point 3 that the US aren't desperate to win the game and they will play for a tie. That is a very conditional statement.
