Rick, the really galling thing is that we keep repeating the same "mistake" over and over. From mossadeq we moved on to arbenz and allende, tonkin to the taliban... Most of this horseshit in the name of anti communism, yet when that ideology met its inevitable demise, our meddling sadly did not. First help saddam gas the people who are still a bit poed about that whole shah thingy, then when the twisted fuck becomes uncontrollable depose his ass, Mubarak, thanks for your years of hard work oppressing your savages, lates. Quaddafi, you crazy fuck, see ya... Assad you asswad... Garbage in garbage out, except the masters of the universe always get what they want. Perpetual war.

Shit, dirt beat me to the punch I see. Don't worry, we will just lib a few cruise missiles at their chemical weapons sites, or pharmaceutical factories, or whatever capricious bullshit springs to mind.everything is bound to work out well. No way we get any blowback from this. Just another country liberated from their barbaric dark age religion at the tip of a us missile. What could possibly go wrong?

On the fiftieth anniversary of the greatest speech of a man who came to be a great proponent for the end of one useless war, a far less eloquent speech from a man about to start another useless war.

We need to realize that most of these countries need a dictator to keep the barbarians at bay. The Dulles brothers managed to destroy the best shot for a vibrant democracy outside of Israel in that cesshole and got an airport named for them.

Exactly. In addition to everything I just said, we run a very serious risk of at least some sort of Iranian retaliation and a proxy war with an increasingly grumpy Russian bear. I fail to see how we have a dog in this fight, other than the usual military industrial complex suspects. The civil war in DR congo has killed millions and no one gives a damn, hell our own civil war killed 600k, why not sit this one out and let the Syrians fight their own battle? The same pukes who want to murder us for not treating women like chattel want our air support and heavy weaponry? F'em. Most of the original secular elements of the rebellion have already fled or been killed by the jihadis. If we had to stick our noses in this shitpile, the time would have been two years ago.

But its so much easier to just flaunt some imaginary capability, right? On a more sober note, dirt is spot on. We are about to get in bed with some very unsavory characters if we intervene, which at this point seems inevitable. In fact I wouldn't put it beyond al nusra and the other jihadi rebels to gas their own people in a false flag operation to get western military intervention. By all accounts, assads forces have turned the tide, and by all reports assad, is a brutal, sober Machiavellian dictator. Why would he snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by doing the one thing that was pretty well guaranteed to get the west involved? Also, how are we going to control the aftermath without boots on the ground? the sunni jihadis will slaughter every Christian and alawite that cant flee to the last child...
Not to worry, we are in good hands with this President. Remember, he didn't set a time line warning. He is Cool under pressure, He is not a hot-head Bush type. Furthermore, he has does a pretty darn good job in ended the war in Iraq, and winding down the one in Afghanistan. Not to mention, Killing Osama , and killing top terrorists. I'd suggest a drone strike on Assad, not a cruise missile. If in fact it is proven that he has used chemical weapons. Or perhaps Sarasota Sly would want to volunteer to go fight them, since he seems to want a impulsive reaction from the President. |

You sir, are the epitome of ignorance. You cite a long dead source as new science, when i assure you that all of your more sophisticated interlocutors are intimately aware of relativity, not to mention the standard model and all other applicable equations. I assure you that i have forgotten more about particle physics than your pathetic corpse will ever know. You understand less than nothing, and (mis)reading a few pop sci books will not rectify that deficiency. |

all drugs should be immediately legalized. The war on drugs is a fucking crime against humanity that has spread suffering around the world. wake the fuck up. You simple little bourgeiose shits who support this abomination are nothing but cowardly scum. Are you simpletons relly too stupid to realize that humanity has indulged in mind altering drugs since beforewe branched from other higher order simiams? How many more lives do you dictatorial shits have to ruin? Fuck your prison industrial complex, and fuck all of your braindead, tough on crime supporters. You must die for us to live. If idiots like you prevail humanity will limp into the future encumbered by the sixth mass extinction. Fuck you, fuck your families and fuck your enablers. You and your disgusting ilk are a massive fetter against the indominatable flow of human progress.

Yes i am bitter, and the amalgam of embitterring agents is myriad. I am bitter that my country has been hijacked by corporatists, religionists, (yes) statists, and other weak minded drones. I'm bitter that science takes a back seat to religious idiocy and vapid pop culture vomit. I'm bitter that we constantly squander our abundance and talent on so much fucking stupidity. I'm bitter that blind partisan morons such as yourself are de riguer while freethinking folks are continually marginalized. Congratulations on your quiescence

As an adendum, thank you switch and the always readable kopono for reaffirming my wavering belief in humanity. Your discussions are a beacon of light, or as sagan said, a flickering candle in this sea of ignorance. of course others have chimed in like kitty vanzack and dirt, but you wre the first. The level of scientific illeteracy displayed here is appalling, but i heartened by the general understanding, curiosity, and excitement this discovery has elicited in so many posters. We are really not that much closer to understanding dark matter and dark energy, but a glaring hole in our tool for potentially understandin those things has been filled. Shit like this is what makes science so exciting for enlivened minds, and renders religion so wanting and pathetic. We don't have all the answers, biut each question and each comensurate answer renders the world that much more intersting and livable, while our religious br4ethren choose to stagnate in a millenia old mileu of intellectual indifferance.

Leave it to religious morons to ruin a thread about the greatest scientific accomplishment of the last half century. You people are too stupid to grasp the significance of this finding, and the standard model has done more for humanity in the last century than all your religious dreck combined. Just fade into the dustbin of history where you belong. Our progress will not be encumbered by your ignorance.

Actually, please, lets forget mr. wright and all the other purveyors of religious idiocy forever. How about we as a people stop listening to what an idiot who makes his living perpetuating fables has to say. We don't listen to shakespearian actors, and they do a far better job telling far better tales.

she is certainly the most competent member of the administration, but libya and egypt? who exactly won there? Both countries are probably now a few years away from women like her having their clits cut off. (in greater numbers) If your country is popultaed by stone age barbarians democracy might not be the best choice. Oh, ask the egyptian generals how democratic their country will be. They will have a figurehead at best. Also, we have done very little to assist the syrians in overthrowing assad. And if you think the alawites wont be butchered to the last man if he falls you are deluded.

No, its not SOCIALISM, it is fascism. It is the government using its monopoly on force to mandate that an individual purchase a product from a private entity. collusion of that sort is properly defined as fascism, but the right wing zealots and obama fluffers have never much cared for facts. Roberts ruled the way he did because he is an unabashed corporatist, all one has to do is look at citizens united.I for one am in favor of permanently abolishing the parasitic middlemen who create nothing but profit for their ilk and embracing universal singer payer healthcare like the rest of the enlightened world, and abhor the dangerous precedent of obamacare. That said, this ruling will actually restrict fluid interpretations of the commerce clause and force any further attempts of this sort to present themselves naked as taxation.
