Landon Donovan to retire at end of MLS season

Los Angeles Galaxy star forward Landon Donovan announced Thursday that he will retire from professional soccer at the end of the Major League Soccer season. Donovan and the Galaxy will make the official announcement at a 2 p.m. PT press conference. "After careful deliberation and many conversations with those closest to me, I have decided that this will be my last year as a professional soccer player,” Donovan wrote in a letter to Galaxy fans.

Beckham's plan for waterfront stadium rejected

David Beckham's bid for a Major League Soccer team suffered a setback on Tuesday when the city of Miami rejected his plan to build a downtown waterfront stadium on a site next to the Miami Heat basketball arena. Beckham's business group, Beckham Miami United, issued a statement saying city officials determined the proposed site was an 'inappropriate location.' The statement said Beckham's group would 'spend the coming months weighing alternatives.' Beckham has spent the last few months exploring the creation of a soccer franchise in Miami and stressed the importance of a downtown stadium location.

Reports claim Villa, Lampard headed to NYCFC

Referees locked out on eve of opener

Only one day before the season opener, Major League Soccer has locked out all on-field officials. The bargaining between the MLS and the Professional Referee Organization has been going on since July without any progress. PRO general manager Peter Walton said "Our proposal represents a significant increase above current compensation for referees and places them above the average for officials around the world." The season will start as normal, but replacement officials will be used.
