The NFL is hopping across the pond in back-to-back weeks as the International Series continues this Sunday when the Miami Dolphis face off against the New Orleans Saints at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
This contest is the second of a record four games to be played in London this season. It also marks the 11th year and the 18th game to be played in London since the International Series began back in 2007 and if there is anything to be learned from the previous games it may be that teams are getting used to the travel and are in “Jolly old England”.
During the first five years of games played in London, it was the Under that was dominating the betting landscape, going 4-1 with a total of 43.2 points per game scored in those contests. However, as teams have gotten more used to the idea to playing overseas, offenses have started showing up the last several years, making the Over a very profitable 10-3 (76.9 percent) over the last 13 games in London.
You can see the difference on the scoreboard as well. In the first five games played in London the average total points per game was 43.2, but it the lat 13 games it shoots all the way up to 50.6 point per game.
The Jaguars are a large part of that Over success. With last week's 44-7 thumping of the Baltimore Ravens as 3-point pups, they easily went over the total of 38.5, meaning the Over has cashed in all five of their games in London. Despite an average total of just 42.5 in those five contests, there has been an average of 54.6 total points scored in those games.
The total for Sunday's game between the 'Phins and Saints is currently a much higher 50.5.
Home Away From Home
Last Sunday will mark the fifth consecutive year the Jaguars have played in London (no other team has made more than three trips there) and after a rocky first few trips across the pond, Jacksonville has gotten used to the idea of playing a home game so far away from home.
In the Jags' first two games in London, they went 0-2 SU/ATS getting blown out by a combined score of 73-27, but in their last three they have gone 3-0 straight up as underdogs each time. In 2015, they edged Buffalo 34-31 as 3.5-point pups, last season they nipped Indianapolis 30-27 as 1-point pups and as mentioned before they thumped the Ravens in Week 3
This week's matchup features two team who have both played at Wembley Stadium before.
The Saints have play there once before, but that was all the way back in 2008 against the Chargers. New Orleans won that game 37-32 as three-point underdogs. The Over cashed in their only game there.
Meanwhile, this is the Dolphins fourth trip to London. Only the Jaguars have played more overseas games than the 'Phins. Miami is 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS, with the most recent being a 27-14 defeat as 2.5-point dogs at the hands of the Jets back in 2015. Of the six games that have gone Under in London, the Dolphins have been involved in two of them.
Faves for Days
There are some interesting tidbits regarding the teams laying chalk in London. First of all the defacto "home team" for the London games have only been the favorite three times in 18 games.
When it comes to betting results those favorites have definitely had the edge, at least on the moneyline. Favorites are 12-5-1 straight up, but are just 10-8 (58.8 percent) against the spread Three of those straight up loses? Pulled off by the Jags of course.
