Free Agent defensive backs get a chance to prove themselves. Will they?

Interesting facts coming out now...but they will be too late to use... ex. If Richard Sherman is on the offensive special teams, and he normally is (going after defensive "gunner") then his arm is not a problem...If he's not, then that arm is a concern....

“It’s all about reading your keys and doing your job. If your job is to be on the quarterback, then you’ve got to read your keys and do just that,” said Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich. “Again, on that particular play, people get in trouble when they become overly aggressive and try and go for the dive when that’s not their responsibility, and the quarterback pulls it and makes a play.” Ends such as Jones and Ninkovich, and linebackers such as Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins, will need to be on point against the read option. If Wilson keeps it, he’ll likely be running outside, so those on the end must make sure there’s no clear path. But Wilson is only half of the puzzle. He could simply give the ball to Lynch, a battering ram of a back who runs with power and is one of the toughest backs to tackle. Focus too much on Wilson running, and the Patriots could leave themselves exposed against Lynch. In fact, that’s what Wilson prefers. “They have to bring attention to Marshawn. Obviously being the best running back in the National Football League, they’ve got to pay attention to him, so I try to hand him off the football,” Wilson said. “Really, like I said [Wednesday], 99 percent of my goal is to hand the ball off to Marshawn. If nobody’s over there, then I’ll take it.” Either proposition is scary for the defense. Picking your poison is a gamble, but the Patriots might be able to choose where the ball goes, depending on how they line up defensively. “You can certainly assign guys to force the ball into a particular player’s hands, and that’s something you want to try and do to keep it moving on the offense so the reads are more difficult,” Patricia said. “I think it really depends on who the skill players are. It’s very rare that you get probably the best running back and one of the best quarterbacks at the same time. You’re usually going to have one guy that’s probably a little bit more dangerous than the other. |

Counting the playoffs, Wilson has fumbled 12 times this season, and either he or his teammates have recovered all 12 of those fumbles. Even if you think Wilson and the Seahawks happen to be particularly good at jumping on loose balls, no team recovers every fumble without a little luck. The bounce of an oblong ball just isn’t predictable enough for recovering fumbles to be a repeatable skill.

How do you measure the efficiency of a defense? Should the stats be weighted like stocks? Some things are obvious yes...if they give up fewer points than the rest of the teams, but shouldn't the offenses of their opponents be factored in?
What metrics are used to say one defense is better than another's? Analysts are saying the Pats D is second-rated, behind the Seahawks? Richard Sherman, a Stanford grad, might have faked his arm injury at the end of last week's game to have everyone focus on his injury... Marketing...and.. creating "THE VEGAS EFFECT" My two big questions: Can the Pats stop the Seahawks running game? Do the Patriots have a running game? HELP!

Just how good is that Seattle defense anyway? St.Louis, San Francisco and Arizona had terrible offensive performances this year. Throw in Carolina, Eagles (during bad stage of year), Washington and Oakland.
I'm not sold on this year's defense... View the STANDINGS section of Covers and review pts for and against.

..Pats needed trick plays to get past the Ravens who weren't that great this year...they had two close games with the Jets who we all know were terrible this year...and they had a tough game against the Raiders another low level team..
Michigan beat Ohio State last year... Jets and Patriots are divisional rivals. Jets were up, Patriots were ho hum.. The injury status of Seattle defenders is very important. Patriots, it was said, will go after them immediately to test their health. Without those defenders at 100 percent, that vaunted Seahawk defense is not so intimidating.
There's also talk of Seattle laying a physical beating on the Pats, but they're ALL NFL players, and I'm sure the Pats' players are going to show their muscle too. Ravens had Flocco, the manager of a great passing game. Seattle has a very good quarterback, but the receivers are not as strong as last year's team. The advantage appears to be with the Pats. This board is hilarious, I must agree. The Strip Club analogy was a riot, as was the "someone will be living in a trailer by the side of the road after this game... |

Patriots have trouble against good defensive teams: Bengals seem to score enough to win. Bengals have a great defense, and this is NOT a season-ending game for Pats as that division is very close.
Bengals will be prepared for NBC Game of the week. Defenses are usually consistent and offenses can be up and down week to week. Looks like Bengals to me... Pats are a bit too confused to beat a top team like the Bengals. pf: bengals 80 patriots 80 pa: bengals 33 patriots 90 |

- Can eagles offensive line replacements handle the fast-paced offense they run... I say NO... there will be missed assignments, penalties and probably fatigue from the running ... Without an experienced offensive line, the defense will be able to run sophisticated blitzing schemes to confuse the JV blockers.
Luck will have no problem against Eagles Defense. They will be also be able to run, as Luck gets around the corner several times on scrambles. If the Eagles offensive line plays efficiently they could generate enough scores to win, but I don't think they will. Hence: Colts cover.. 37-28 |

For all those Denver bashers insulting and calling names to Seattle backers...well, too bad we don't have a Richard Sherman to offer the deserved response to you'll...
Outside of a few insults, this board is very entertaining and funny...Hope to see you next year...adios... |

russell wilson will be running a lot to set up lynch and passing to Harmin....
The guy who suggested a forum for after the game had an interesting idea...would be fun..except i don't think people who lost money would be too enthused... |

As for Denver beating San Diego. This was San Diego's second straight playoff game on the road...and before that, they had a tough game against Kansas City (field goal game). Denver has been home...
Denver's defense is not as good as Seattle's offense... |

forkball,
All the analysts are saying in their interviews that WILSON does not make mistages. He's conservative. As for the fumble...everyone fumbles (how many times has he fumbled?) Seattle will not be blitzing much because their front four is facing a weakened denver offensive line. Their priority is coverage, and the problem for Seattle is covering 5 good receivers... If Denver gets that running game going it'll be tough for Seattle defensive line to get back to line of scrimmage for tackles... Seattle's offense with Harmin will put up points....wilson running read option will set up trap plays and cut backs for Lynch, as wilson runs by design...When the denver defense comes up, which they are being told to maintain their coverage, and falls for run, Wilson will lob td passes to open receivers as Auburn did against Alabama.. |
