WahooS, I think what happened to Tech vs. OU is that they flat out got exposed as the product of an easy schedule. There are a couple of ways to beat West Virginia; try to outscore them, which Baylor failed at, or get pressure on Smith which Texas did, but still couldn't beat them.
Tech's attempts at blitzing Landry Jones failed miserably and he made them pay, Geno Smith should absolutely shred this defense. I haven't said anything that a lot of people don't already know so the wildcard here is Tech's O vs. WV's D. Nothing that I look at adds up to Tech staying within 5 points but like you said, I'm almost scared to bet it because it's so far off from what I expected.

Is this serious? Someone help me out with what I might be overlooking because I expected this to be at least a two touchdown spread.

First Big 12 title was great, the next one will be even better. You're right he wasn't the coordinator at Arizona but you're kidding yourself if you say he wasn't in charge of it. Defense is his pride and joy.

Yeah that Arizona defense sure was good under Mike. I'm sure he'll come in and turn things right around.
P.S.- this is sarcasm, the UO defense will not be ranked #1 playing in the Big 12.

Stiln, watch the video I linked and it will make more sense. This somewhat started the honey badger craze as it has over 27 million views.

Haha, glad I didn't get blasted for that post. After I posted I thought it was a little harsh. Anyway, another below average performance from the offense, but the defense comes up with four turnovers and give the O some extra possessions. I've said it before, this D is nowhere near the likes of Bama and LSU, but they do a few things really well that make a huge difference. Bring on the Bears next week, homecoming in Stillwater!

What a great win for the Cowboys today in a game that was a lower scoring carbon copy of last year's game.
Weeden was hesitant in the first half but to his credit he didn't let the pressure force him into turnovers. The second half, he was nothing short of stellar. Blackmon was Blackmon...well except for the butterfingers at the 2 yard line...how embarrassing; thank goodness for the turnover a few plays later. The OSU D did what they had to do to get the W and played and incredible 2nd half. The only points given up was a touchdown when we were in prevent to make A&M run clock, and the "safety" to run out the clock. FOUR, yes FOUR turnovers forced in the 2nd half...amazing for a defense that gets zero respect. We're certainly no Bama on D, but give credit where credit is due. Cyrus Gray's 100 yd game streak is over and a 5'8" Broderick Brown absolutely shut dominated Fuller. While I didn't expect OSU to fall behind so far early, the game was close as I expected. Another road win for the Cowboys, and at a top 10 "SEC" school at that. Here's to success the rest of the season...Go Pokes!

aggieeaccountant,
Regarding the atmosphere in College Station, I wanted to tell you that I attended the OSU game down there in '09 and not only was the game atmosphere incredible, but the fans are very hospitable. We camped at the Dixie Chicken the night before the game and also took a stroll over to the Dry Bean shot bar; I'll be damned if Aggie fans weren't buying us drinks and shots all night which made the swaying student section unbearable during the game. Road trips are always a little bit sweeter when your team gets a victory, but even going out after the game, A&M fans were very complimentary and fun to hang with. I can only hope that visiting fans are treated the same when they come to Stillwater, except trash-talking sooners

This will be my last post on the matter and I'll be back Saturday night to either give props to A&M or celebrate a huge win for the Cowboys.
If OSU can keep pressure off of Weeden and avoid turnovers, they should have a great chance to win the game. Obviously that's easier said than done. The turnovers by A&M in last year's game have been mentioned, but rather than give the the credit to good defense, it's discredited. Turnovers are a part of the game and whichever team creates them this year wins the game. I think you'll see OSU try to complete short passes and establish the ground game to pile up the first downs, keep the ball away from the Aggies, and again, avoid turnovers by forcing the ball downfield. If they have success in this area it will do nothing but open up the vertical passing game. As for defense, unless a couple of our guys have breakout games you won't see OSU getting much pressure with the front four. I hope I'm wrong there. The main factor will be stopping the run on first and second down to put A&M in third and long situations and make them win the game through the air. If that's not successful, Gray and Michael probably have a big day and OSU is on the outside looking in for the Big12-2-1 title.

Trust me, as an OSU fan, winning on the road is a nice change not to mention going undefeated on the road. If anything it proves that the program has made great strides over the last 4 years or so. The win at #2 Missouri in '08 was huge for OSU, and I already mentioned the win at A&M in '09 without our best playmaker. Consistent wins on the road, no matter who you're playing, bring confidence which helps for the really tough road games.
Again, I haven't stated anywhere that OSU is a lock to win this game; I'm trying present the other side of the argument that A&M will coast to victory. Best of luck to all who bet on the game.

Regarding kick returns, Sharp is a huge weapon on kickoffs with his ability to kick it through the endzone. When they aren't in the endzone he kicks the ball high enough to give coverage time to get down the field. A&M may have a chance at a return but it won't be often.
As for our return game, Justin Gilbert is a burner and once he's in the open field he won't get caught from behind. Slot receiver Josh Cooper returns punts and can certainly make people miss but he's returning punts because of his hands more than anything. I have no issues with people betting A&M, especially considering the home advantage. I was at the game in '09 when OSU pulled out a 36-31 victory with a no Dez Bryant and Zac Robinson and Kendall Hunter both banged up; not to mention Von Miller was on D for the Aggies. I have way more faith in Weeden, Randle and Blackmon than I ever had in Robinson and Hunter. There's no way I would put money on this game and a 10 point Aggie win isn't out of the question, but don't be surprised if State wins by 10 either. |

Considering my avatar, I will attempt to give an objective viewpoint from the OSU side of things. I'll preface by saying that I think the line is set where it should be considering the game is in College Station and I can see this ending in a 3 point victory by either team.
First, to address a few of the matchups... Everyone is talking about the talent in A&M's backfield which is understandable. Both backs are effective and will be tough to keep in check. I'm sure people will point to the success Tulsa had rushing the ball against OSU's defense, and while the numbers don't lie, they can be a bit misleading. OSU held a 45-6 lead against Tulsa...not to mention it was about 2am local time. Considering the delayed kickoff, the weather and that OSU's gameplan revolved around stopping GJ Kinne's passing game(he was hurt the third drive of the game) I'll give our guys the benefit of the doubt here. On the flip side, OSU's backfield is more than capable of creating problems for A&M. Joseph Randle is 10th nationally in rushing and is great at catching the ball out of the backfield on screens which will be very helpful in beating the 3-4 defense. Jeremy Smith is a more than capable backup and will also get a fair share of carries. A&M will definitely try to put pressure on Weeden to take away the vertical passing game, they were successful at that a year ago until our coaches made great halftime adjustments. I think you'll see our offense shifting and putting a lot of guys in motion, lining Blackmon up in the slot, etc... to try and create mismatches and beat the rush the Aggies will be sending. Offensive coordinator Todd Monken came from the NFL as a position coach and has certainly assisted with gameplanning against a 3-4, the fact is it will come down to execution by the players. Weeden's maturity should be a plus for OSU but he has to avoid turning the ball over and giving the Ags additional opportunities to score. In my opinion, the deciding factors will be which team can control the line of scrimmage and special teams. As for the OSU D, if we can make A&M one-dimensional and avoid giving up big plays in the passing game, our guys can come out victorious. A few intangibles that are on OSU's side... I'm glad it's a day game. It'll still be a great afternoon environment but the crowd always turns it up a notch when it's the national night game. Also, the Pokes were undefeated on the road last year and we returned a lot of experience so they should be mentally ready for everything they're going to see. |
