I have never considered a sports service in my life. I was on a morning drive one Saturday morning and there was a radio show on AM that was talking sports and gambling. These guys were hyping how much they make for their clients. How great sports investing is. How they will turn $1k to $8k in one weekend. How they pick at a high percent.

And how they will give me a 3 free plays for this weekends games. I called and listened to their pitch, declined their package and took the picks. They went 1-2.

I talked to a gambling buddy of mine who says they are nothing but a scam. I was already skeptical before I ever called and kind of knew then to not call anymore.

About a month or two go by and I get a call. This guy was a pretty good salesman. He caught me on a good run and I wanted to get into hoops but did not have the time with football and fantasy football still occupying most of my time. He game me a promo for $30. He was sure to go 3-0. He went 0-3. He told me he would work with me until we got back in the black. All said and done he was 11-14. PATHETIC. Then started to ask to buy his bowl package. I laughed at him and he was offended. The conversation ended and we have only spoke once since. I told him he would never get another penny from me.

Now I am getting calls from a 516 area code as well as 702. Each time these guys try to sell me stuff. I just break their balls each time until they no longer can take it and end the call.

Is my number circulating around some boiler room? Will they ever stop or is it time to get a new number?

Buying picks =

I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if your number was circulating. This is the equivalent to signing up for an email scam and then wondering why you get a bunch of junk mail. Think about it ...

I realize the foolishness of even getting involved in the first place. I was just interested, big mistake. I know its a scam. Its pure win/win for them . Not to mention some of their practices and high pressure sales pitch. Asking for you to buy something by the 3rd sentence.

Looks like I will have to get a new number because I am being harassed almost daily.

you should tell us who these clowns are. Not that its enforced but they really cant do that- do you tell them not to call you anymore?

these handicap lists are purchased and pushed around easier then a cheap person- I signed up once for a website with free picks and my email was sold to tons of capping sites within days. I couldnt put a stop to them all.

frustrating.

Today's call came from 702-212-8489

Second different schmuck calling from this same number. Claiming its someone who works for "Jack Stacks" or something like that. Finalist of the prestigious Hilton contest and he has lots of information on today's game. I break his balls hard. I even tell him that he should give me the game and call another game and give him the opposite and he is guaranteed at least one happy customer. He doesn't like my idea and said he would never do that.

516-323-8880

Claims to work for "Bobby Esposito." Thick New York/Jersey style accent. Not high pressure, just makes it seem like I am missing out not buying his package. This is probably the root of my problem as I remember that name from the radio show that is broadcast here on Saturday mornings.

877-579-5008

Another guy, named "Danny" claims to work for someone who is a high performer in the Hilton contest. RED FLAG! He was the worst. The only one who got me to fork over money. He charged me $30 for a 3 game promo. He goes 0-3. Works with me giving me 1-2 plays per day for next week weeks. He has a terrible run then asks for money because he won 3 in a row. Told him we will never strike a deal, haven't heard from him in a month.

And there was one more who claims to be "Ken Strauss." He is professional and has many contacts and is a man of information. He has gone 1-5.

There were a few others from North Carolina area code.

I opened my own "handicapping service" in 1984 before the online sportsbook era and closed it a year later because I couldn't handle people lossing money and the stories of losing families and worse from clients . Before that I did the handicapping for a service in Long Island, NY  owned  by a guy they called Jaba the Hutt, and Stu Finer was one of the guys on the floor.

Anyhow, if your number was given it has been sold to every tout service out there.

Today another scamdicapper called. Told me he got my number from a preferred players list. Said his name was Ed O'niell or something from Vegas Inside and his specialty is tracking 10 high rollers. Guys who bet up 500K.They dont always agree but when 6/10 like a particular game they hit at 79% and they are a goose that lays a golden egg.

I do nothing but bust his balls. He says that he does not give his picks out without someone paying up front. Tries every tactic. Even rude garbage like trying to talk over you or interrupt the conversation. Said hell pass my number along to guys who give free picks. These guys are the worst.
BEWARE. ONCE THEY GET YOUR NUMBER THEY DONT SEEM TO STOP. DIFFERENT SALESMAN EVERY TIME.

I use to work for a service in 516. Thats Hickville , New York. The company was called Vic Montaro Sports Machine .  .. These guys made some good money ... If that 516 number calls you again ..Just ask for Tony Dell .Then tell him you will sue if the number calls you again ... Trust me ...when people said that ,there were memos sent out to all the desks not to call that number ever again.....BTW Tony Dell posts on covers  in the Website promotion section.. Or ask for Budda .. he is the owner .Tell him never to call it should stop....

Thanx Knox.

Today it was another 702 call. I think its Vegas. Next time I'm there (March) I want to see where these boiler rooms are. I wonder if they actually have an office as a front for their racket.

I actually look forward to the conversations now with these scam artists, I even give them my genius idea.. Call client A and tell him to take the Giants. Call clinet B and tell them to take the Pats. You have a guaranteed winner! Bada bing bada coom.

Another scamdicapper calls, this time a female. She has a sexy smoker's voice. However, I said so many foul things to her that I doubt she will ever pick up the phone and call me again.

I told the guy I had quit gambling and that I was getting help for my illness.  I don't think he will call back.

That's a great line. I have used the same, even embellishing it further by adding that i lost my wife and my home to gambling.

you could try and foll with them by listening and then saying "that sounds like a great deal but how about 50% off if I agree to wager opposite of the picks you give me"

winner005, I got to go with your advice.

Today, things go heated and rather personal. He named names. Being from the South, I challenged him to a dual and being the coward that he is, he just plays telephone tough guy and punks out. You are right, I know why they are calling and all its going to do is aggravate me further. Sports gambling and life in general is tough enough, don't need this nonsense.

I am curious if anyone has actually had positive experiences working with an actual professional, assuming something like that even exists.

Just an update.

The calls are less frequent but still continue. Mostly from 702 area code or NO CALLER ID numbers. 9/10 times I just press ignore on my phone. Other times I just mess with them. This guy today was the most annoying. He didn't fall for my denial of understanding what his call was about. He said he knew that I have been bombarded by calls. His next question was the inevitable "So do you have a local broker or do you bet offshore?" So I asked him what color panties his wife is wearing. He said excuse me. Then I asked him how he got off asking me such sensitive information. He proceeded to continue irritating me by repeating my statements like a child. A real smart behind. Caught me on a bad day cuz I can usually crush guys like this, but was not in the mood since I have had a tough week where my ribs were broken from a hit and run auto accident I was a victim of.

Anyway, just a warning to all you out there. DO NOT GET ON THIS LIST! They wont stop. My good friend has also been in this predicament,  he changed his number and I am awaiting results as to if that is the key.

The calls keep on coming. Sometimes they take a week off and then blitz daily. The last one was a repeat caller, the first time he just kept yapping bout how much different he is than the other guys. After realizing he wasn't getting any money he said he would give me his picks for a week for $1 a day. Thats $7.  I said no way, Jose! Then he reiterated that I simply cannot miss tonight's pick. It is one he only gives out a few times annually and that only his high rollers get this pick but he wants my business and is willing to give me the pick if I buy his package. I politely decline and tell him that the only way I'll do business is kick him back a percentage of what he earns for me. He says that is not how he does business. Then he says, "If I win you this game will you jump on board?" Again, I tell him NO and that only an idiot would sign up from one outcome, told him it would take a minimum of 30 games for me to pay out anything. Then he says that he'll ask his boss if he may release the play and if so, I must wager atleast $200 and pay him $100 the next day. He says he must get off the phone and gives me a number to call in 5 minutes. I just laugh and say sure. I never call the number.

He calls a week later and acts like nothing happened. Almost like its the first time were ever talking. Mustve been reading from a different script. He slips up alot this time. He says how impressed his clients are with his office in Vegas. When pressed regarding the physical location and its proximity to the strip he says its not in Vegas but in some outskirts. I tell him that I will be in Vegas in 2 weeks and that I would like to have a sit down meeting with him. He says that it is what all people say and that no one every comes thru on their word. I tell him I do not like to hang out too much in casinos while I'm in Vegas and that getting away and seeing something other than the strip actually interests me. At this point something strange happened. His voice changed and I could not make out what he said exactly, and the phone cut off.

About 5 minutes later I get another call, this time from a NO CALLER ID. New guy, same old bullshit. He asks me if I like to receive free picks, this time I feel like breaking balls and I tell him that I like getting free picks as much as his person wife like to take it up her behind. Even though he clearly heard me he says 'Excuse me?" I then tell him off and wish that he would die. I then hang up. He put me on his robodialer as I went onto receive 14 calls in 4 minutes.

bizkilla, a very entertaining thread!

may I recommend a solution? the next call you recieve simply explain that "you sell picks" not buy them, they must have their wires crossed, "I would not change your phone number" (this could result in many problems) continue to do nothing more than "bust their balls" or better yet, start calling them back, with picks for sale; believe me, it will stop!

thanks sportsnetwork! Love the avatar of Frank BTW! Got a chance to get to know him before he passed. A first ballot Hall of Famer in gaming industry and an icon for sure.

There were no calls last week period. And am going to take your advise. I got a plan that is brilliant. Next time these schmucks call, I'm going to attempt to buy their list of leads. Then use that list to call the potential clients. Call guy A and tell him to take the Red Sox and call guy B and tell em to take the Yankees. GUARANTEED WINNER EVERYTIME!!

Just kidding, but I know that is how these people operate.

And buffalo, you are absolutely correct. For any rookie who stumbles upon this thread. Learn from my mistakes. There is a billion dollar industry out there seeking to scam you, there is no lightning in a bottle. Do your own homework and never pay for someone elses picks.

Bingo!  If you want to get someone or some business back for scamming you, just send out their e-mail address or phone number to these useless parasites called touts.

As far as your own situation goes, quit answering your phone if you do not recognize the number, as voice mail will save you if it happens to be someone else.  Otherwise, you may strongly consider changing your phone number.
