not being a user, I have "no dog in this fight" BUT it seems to me that Barney Frank and the other decriminalization advocates are correct that the current laws are a lot like prohibition in the 1920's in that it ties up a lot of law inforcement efforts on bullshit AND just gives criminal gangs a source of income.
DEA, White House say marijuana dangerous, has no accepted medical use
Decriminalization advocates say marijuana laws should mirror alcohol laws
NORML spokesman says marijuana user arrested in U.S. "every 38 seconds"
HR 5843 would not affect laws on growing, importing, exporting marijuana
(CNN) -- The U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users, Rep. Barney Frank said Wednesday, announcing a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams, almost a quarter-pound, of the substance.
Current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans, said Frank, flanked by legislators and representatives from advocacy groups.
"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business," Frank said during a Capitol Hill news conference. "I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time." (btw, Barny Frank ALSO believes that online poker and sports betting should NOT be illegal)
The Massachusetts Democrat and his supporters emphasized that only the use -- and not the abuse -- of marijuana would be decriminalized if the resolution passes.
OH and GUESS is the co-sponsor is? Texas Republican and former Presidential candidate Ron Paul.

loved the South Park episode where Cartman was the local Hippy Pest Control expert. he listed the least dangerous in the group as the "Giggling Stoner Hippy"
I'm suprised that no one has come up with weed as a way to pacify Iraq and Afghanistan. "Hey Achmad, let's go throw rocks at the Americans. Hey Chill, Abdullah, your Ruining my Buzz"

Preventing outbreaks of Hippies (Redneck health Tips)
Hippies infections have been prevalent as early as ancient Greek times. Hippocrates is known to have described the cutaneous spreading of Hippies and scholars of Greek civilization define the Greek word "hee-paez", literally "to stink and annoy".

I would also unwind Regean's "Crime Bill"....... those mandatory sentences for small amounts of personal drug use is pretty severe. I don't have any stats but I heard the numbers are staggering how many people are locked up because of that.

in the case of prostitution your talking about another "victimless crime" that is MADE into a victimising situation for women by organized crime BECAUSE it is illegal. it's very ilegality here in Las Vegas leads to street crime and robbery.
"over the hump" in Parump were there are legal brothels they have little or no problems with "john" being rolled or robbed and the incidence of STD's is very low. in fact, there is somewhat of a movement to bring back the historic "Block 16" or turning East Fremont Street into a "little Amsterdam."
would be better, not to mention safer and more honest than the street hustlers and so called "gentlemen's clubs" that we currently have in the city.

Should be legal and the only reason it is not is because of the money alcohol companies give to keep it illegal. Alcohol is the only legal drug that anyone of age can buy and they are afraid if marijuana becomes legal it will cut into their sales.
Also if anyone ever chooses to look up marijuana studies done by independent groups and by European countries; you will see that all the US reports (funded by the government) will be almost he complete opposite about its harmfulness, addiction, etc. Everything the US releases regarding marijuana is usually not close to the truth.

Ok so know we know where you're coming from.
It's your life and your opinion. You are entiltled to both. We disagree on the illegal end.

The reason I don't like pot as much as alcohol is due to the fact that alcohol effects me much much more. Pot is weak. I rarely ever smoke it. (Maybe once or twice a year if that). And if I do i'm already loaded and just looking to get even more wrecked.
It makes no sense to me to have alcohol legal and pot illegal. Alcohol can KILL you. Could you imagine someone trying to kill themselves by smoking regular pot? Impossible.
The gateway drug arguement doesn't work because what lead to marijuana? Cigarettes? What led to them? Soda? Coffee? What a joke.
You can't have one and not the other. It's hyprocritical. And don't knock it 'till ya try it.

I think that the continued criminalization of marijuana is less about the beer and alcohol producers lobbying against it and more the blue nose prohibitionists. hell, I flew at the airline with a guy who had been a corporate pilot for R J Reynolds in Winston, NC. he told me the company had already registered half a dozen marijuana cigarette brand names back in the 60's just in case it became legal.
I'm sure the tobacco lobby is just as, if not more, powerful than the booze people in Washington.
