One New York City-sized legend has just endorsed another.
Rudy Giuliani, whose gritty determination in the wake of the Sept. 11th attacks that toppled the World Trade Center enshrined him as a New York City hero, told the New York Post Thursday he is backing real estate tycoon Donald Trump in the contest for the Republican presidential nomination.
“I support Trump. I’m gonna vote for Trump,” he said, citing Trump’s positions on the economy, immigration and security.
Giuliani predicted Trump will have a highly successful showing in New York State’s Republican presidential primary April 19.
“It’s a question of how much he gets over 50 percent. If he wins 70 to 80 delegates, Donald has a good shot of securing the 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination before the convention,” Giuliani said.
In assessing Trump, whose business deals and lifestyle have made him a semi-permanent fixture in New York City’s media, society, and economic circles since the 1980s, Giuliani said Trump’s style gets results
“Trump is a negotiator,” Giuliani said. “He negotiates from a high bar to get people’s attention. Threatening to withdraw from NATO will get a better deal with NATO.”
Giuliani said he met with Sen. Ted Cruz at one point in the campaign, and said the Texas Republican’s attacks on “New York values” irked him.
“It’s New York City. We’re family. I can make fun of New York. But you can’t!” Giuliani said.
“I know he was attacking liberal Democratic values … I know. I fought to change those policies in areas like welfare reform and policing, as did Mike Bloomberg. … There was a better way to say it,” Giuliani said.
As reported by Western Journalism, Giuliani had hinted last month he would support Trump.
“I think Donald Trump has surpassed all expectations,” Giuliani told interviewers last month when asked whether Trump was qualified to be president. “There’s no reason to believe he won’t surpass that expectation.”
Giuliani has said that he and Trump have talked often during the campaign and has been optimistic about Trump’s chances in a general election.
“I think he could over perform in a general election similar to what Reagan did in 1980, bringing in new people,” he said.
