yet let go because he claims he was "racially profiled" and is only guilty of "driving while black."
The weed in the car? Oh its a friends, who has a medical marijuana card. The booze in the car? Oh that is from months ago, I forgot it was even in here. The "bar" he was coming from is actually a strip club, but let's not mention that.
You're black and claiming racism against white officers? Ok, nothing further.
Just another idiot who is going to help sink this forsaken city.

DJ, I'm curious what his legal challenge is? Challenge to the ticket? From what I read he wasn't charged with possession (only an odor present?) and not with DUI. How does racial profiling have anything to do with failure to signal? I was actually with a girl about 15 yes ago that was pulled over for failing to signal for a lane change. The cop saw a partial bottle of Makers Mark in the car (left by her father) and charged her with an open container. She looked nothing like the councilman. Wouldn't you agree an empty bottle of rum shows that the bottle was most likely consumed in the car. Who just takes an empty bottle and puts it in the car? But moreover, I would think the police of Detroit have much more to worry about than writing tickets for a signal.

The issue would be whether the stop was pretextual. In many jurisdictions, failing to signal a turn may not be a basis for a usual stop.
While many Courts have made a pretextual argument disfavored, they still exist. It is generally the subjective actions of the police officer i.e. does this officer generally or ever stop people for failing to signal a turn.
Generally speaking, you are right, the larger the city, the less likely they will stop for things like this or rolling through stop signs.
