I think saying companies give raises for two reasons is too narrow minded...
Companies often give raises for retention as training a new person and the quality of work while they are getting up to speed might suffer... it is in the best interest of the employer to give a raise to stay competitive against other companies that might pay more...
This is different then experience.... companies often offer medical/dental after a certain time period to increase retention... often times after a certain period of time companies offer a retirement package, pension, life insurance, profit sharing, stock options, mutual funds, perhaps with a match... 401k, 403b etc... once again to encourage retention rather then losing the employee to a competitor...
these are often predefined based on length of service and are separate from commissions, bonuses or raises based on performance...

thats a 2172.1 % increase (not because of minimum wage mandates)
maybe you can point to a year that had negative inflation, but over time, wishing for your savings to appreciate is futile
from 1870-1913 ish we had "negative" inflation
gold standard, peace, tiny government budget. greatest period of wealth creation and economic growth in our country's history
savings actually did appreciate and do during deflationary times which is why we all should be wishing daily for deflation
A structural deflation existed from 1870s until the cycle upswing that
started in 1895. The deflation was caused by the decrease in the
production and distribution costs of goods. It resulted in competitive
price cuts when markets were oversupplied. The mild inflation after 1895
was attributed to the increase in gold supply that had been occurring
for decades.[7]
There was a sharp rise in prices during World War I, but deflation
returned at the war's end. By contrast, under a fiat monetary system,
there was high productivity growth from the end of World War II until the 1960s, but no deflation.

You all don't get the point, it is a bowlsit thread... Either minimum wage or unions are soley responsible for all financial crisis/debt/recession/etc....
And therefore everything else gets a free pass....
Anything short of that and you are drinking socialist/communist Kool-aid...
Typical bowslt propaganda littering the forum with his leaflets...

First off some of you have to stop comparing 2012 to the 1800's. My God your talking about 2 entirely different worlds. A population of 13 million compared to 300 million, not even in the same damn ballpark, but some of you think you can run the country the same way, with the same amount of people doing that work. Its really funny how some of you keep believing that the 1800's were so great yet none of you were alive back then to know what those people faced on a daily basis. All you keep blurting out is how we had less govt and things were so much cheaper, blah blah blah. Damn come up with a new argument. Heres a thought turn off all of your modern lifestyle stuff for a week, then come back on here and say how great living in the 1800's would have been without that stuff.
Anybody that starts a topic blaming the minimum wage for the costs of everything going up is a complete bonehead.
Hey bowlhead, i guess when the thieving insurance company gives you useless salesman a raise and the company raises prices on the consumers insurance to pay for those raises thats okay.
You wanna talk about prices going thru the roof, lets talk about the whole scam insurance industry fleecing everybody in the country, not some person working at mickey d's for chump change.
What are you mad, your company only sent you on 4 tropical paid work/scam vacations this year instead of the usual 5

Its amazing how some people dont want to see other people get raises, but those very same people want raises at their jobs.
Everytime an insurance guy gets a raise, the insurance company has to raise their prices to pay for that. So its exactly the same thing as people at mickey d's getting to make more, so prices have to go up.
Some of you on this site, really need to start being a little more caring for your fellow human beings. It appears some of you were born with no heart and zero compassion for others.
Yeah in some perfect fantasy world, the prices of everything doesnt go up and everything stays the same forever.
Once again, you and DL36 completely missed the point of the discussion by a long ways. Minimum wage has little to do with people getting raises on the job.
Minimum wage is designed for people like high school or college students and people with few or no marketable skills.
And as I have previously stated, labor is a significant factor contributing to the cost of goods and services.
If everyone could afford an 85 inch LED tv then you can expect the price of that tv to be much higher than it would be if a fewer amount of people could afford that same tv.

Surely, as a woman firefighter you have extinguished fires that ultimately an insurance company compensated the owner of what was damaged. Typically, that owner payed out a fraction of that cost in insurance premiums. That is a bad thing?
Your insurance bashing isn't well thought out. Especially when you consider that people come to me.

the4y come to you and other insurance salesman because its the law that people need to have insurance you friggin bonehead. So really stop acting like you are Gods gift to the insurance business, because just about everybody on the planet, knows that the whole damn insurance industry is nothing but a huge scam with people getting fleeced on a daily basis by all the insurance companies, that includes medical, home owners, life insurance, business insurance etc etc. All over priced with with over paid robots selling the stuff. Insurance agents should only be paid minimum wage, like a mikey d's worker. In fact a mikey d's worker should be paid more because they sure work harder then an insurance salesman.

Capitalism and the free market determined years ago insurance agents will get paid more than someone who works at McDonalds. Probably because it takes more training and education to be an insurance agent than it does to work at McDonalds

no it takes more training to learn how to hustle and rob people, thats why they get paid more. Far as how hard each one works, the people at mikey d's run circles around those pencil pushing thieves that sit on their asses all day long anyday of the week.

This is coming from a guy that squirted a fire hose once every other day. Meanwhile getting paid enough for two or three people to live a really nice life.
I don't make a salary or an hourly wage. I make money based on people making decisions based on information put in front of them. If you wanna call my clients idiots go ahead. You are a simple minded fool who gets a whopping pension you probably don't deserve.

yes i know your the greatest insurance salesman alive and your clients just love paying for insurance. News flash for you fighting just one structure fire takes more energy that you will use up in 3 years sitting on your ass talking on the phone. Guys like you can bash my occupation all you want, but pussies like you are to afraid to even consider doing that job. Another news flash for you, if being a firefighter was such a great cushy overpaid occupation, then you sure as hell would see thousands signing up for the tests, but truth is not alot of people want to do that job. So keep bashing away, the guy who goes on 4-6 bullshit work vacations in tropical places every year.

first off, how can you make the argument that since no one was alive in the 1800s they cannot know if times were good, but in the same sentence claim the 1800s were not good. how can you know if you werent there? jesus, thats logic 101!
cd, your stance on insurance companies surely lends itself to be an argument AGAINST govt run/mandated insurance. in the "free market" you can stop buying a product from a supplier if it becomes too expensive. if all suppliers charge too much, a new supplier will emerge because they know they can obtain customers (similar to the downfall of woolworths). guess what obamacare does to this marketplace. glad to know you can be counted as someone against obamacare.

That, like most of the bs you spew, is completely untrue. One of my best friends is a firefighter at the international airport. It took him many years to get his job because there were 900 applicants for every 1 job opening.

Since you are a right wing lackey and trump the principles of the pure free market, wouldn't the inherent principles of the free market in dealing with competition drive the prices down?
Isn't it you right wingers that argue that collusion cannot happen in such a free market because the competition will be 'naturally' driven to reduce prices?

It isn't true competition for one thing. Because Obama has granted all of the waivers to his buddies.
The collusion isn't the objection. Its the mandate and the expanding of governments role to regulate the mandate and play favorites.

well gee golly, what do you know, the cost of providing health care is sky rocketing, no wonder costs are going up, free market or not.
Bbbbbut, wait. Isn't the free market at work now? Yet costs are increasing?
Bbbbbut, what does that say about your 'free market?' Yet, suddenly Obamacare is going to 'drive' the free market principles out of sorts on health care.
Good stance. Your right wing principles betray you, young SteveShaneWalker.
