January 24, 2012 – Senate votes on PIPA

There is no guarantee that the vote takes place on that date, and Obama could also eventually Veto. 

The Congressional version of the Bill is tabled until at least February.

I guess anything is possible, but won't we all be a little shocked if these incumbents stick their necks out on a volatile issue like this in an election year?

Or, he could pass it and the mindless left will give him another pass, so long as he puts a yellow sticky on the bill saying that even though he passed it, he doesn't like it

If this passes, I think this admin will eclipse GWB's  in the civil rights abuses, and freedom snatching department.

It doesn't make any difference which political party is calling the shots, our civil liberties will continue to erode.  Before the "War on Terror" it was "The Communist Threat", different decades, same old shit.

Maybe.

I can think of a few countries, however, that don't speak German as a result of that 'ironic' bravery.

No dispute about that. Though we'd probably have been speaking Russian had you not joined the party! 

Returning to the point. It's sad to see the lobbying of big business having such an influence in attempting to destroying the foundations of which you are so proud.

Just read a great book about that.

Agree on the lobbying. While I do think the concern over this bill is overstated, I absolutely do not agree that passing it is necessary, therefore, I am completely against it. We have enough 'unnecessary' legislation.

Remove the former (which most western societies can proudly identify with) and the brave have something of great significance which they can no longer fight for.

Funny you say that. My Grandad fought in the war so I grew up knowing in great depth about my countries stand during the conflict along with the U.S. future involvement. It wasn't until a couple of years ago I made an effort to read up in depth about the battles on the Eastern Front - How the Germans practically led to their own downfall by attempting to invade Russia.

I felt pretty stupid realising my lack of knowledge on a side of the war which is hardly taught, despite It's great significance.

Thus, the photo of Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin sitting together became a lot more iconic.

I was actually thinking of Fall of Berlin and In Deadly Combat.

I actually just finished Stephen King's 1963 about a trip back in time to save Kennedy. Fascinating premise and some good stuff. Bit of an anti-climatic ending though.

Back to Yosemite's point, and good to see you chap, most historians really wonder what the war would have been like had Germany not overextended and not made exterminating every person a priority, thus spreading their forces too thin.

I think most agree it would have been v-e-r-y different.

I wonder how different it would have been if America never entered WWI. Or how Hitler would have never been able to come to power if We never signed off on such draconian economic punishment.

Also worth checking out a Russian film from 1985 called 'Come and See'  about the German occupation of Byelorussia https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

An outstanding film but pretty harrowing.

Interesting to note that had Germany defeated Russia then that would have been pretty much game over for Britain and the U.S. in defeating Nazi occupation of Europe.

Thank goodness for old Adolf's overconfidence (or was it increased madness?)

I've often wondered about this:

A firefight between German forces and the 5th Duke of Wellington Regiment during WWI in the small French village of Marcoing.
 
'As the ferocious battle wound down and enemy troops surrendered or retreated, a wounded German soldier limped out of the maelstrom and into Private Tandey's line of fire, the battle weary man never raised his rifle and just stared at Tandey resigned to the inevitable.  "I took aim but couldn't shoot a wounded man," said Tandey, "so I let him go."

The German Soldier was a 29 year old Adolf Hitler and Tandey's moment of compassion would have repercussions beyond anything imaginable.
