It is less about our perceptions and more about what is in our current interest. In the 80s, the future Taliban and OBL were in our interest in stretching the USSR.
Currently, it is in our interest to have an unstable Libya, thereby forcing Middleeastern countries to expend forces and/or resources.
US foreign policy really has no place for long term thinking, especially when the head thinker has no reason to look beyond 5 years.

Now we learn that the same "insurgents" that blew us up and killed thousands of American soldiers in Iraq, are now making up an estimated 20% of the "freedom fighters' we are now supporting in Libya.
and your SOURCE for this speculation?
haven't seen ANY "muslim extreamists" surface in Egypt, Tunisia or Lybia as of yet. I'm sure their are some factions but so far it's been a "secular" revolution more about throwing off dictators that kept the people in poverty.
could a islamist faction try to take over? Yes, that's always a possability in that part of the world BUT, so far, you haven't seen any "Ayatollah" trying to take charge like in Iran after they overthrew the Shah.

I'm not doubting you, Rick, but where was this quote from. I cannot find it.
As referenced above, this would present more problems than any other assistance we can provide. It is one thing to assist a group coming to power, which may save hundreds of thousands of lives and simultaneously, be in our best interest.
It is obviously another to arm those that will use such weapons to fire upon us.
