I go to a public university in the USA and each semester every student gets charged a flat fee hence govt health care....anyway, I have been very sick since tuesday with all the symptoms of the H1N1 flu I decided to go in today because it was getting very bad....i go in
lady says "oh a lot of people have been coming in with these symptoms must be something viral"
I said: "well I have every symptom of the flu and as you can see I have a fever, cough, nasea, i slept 14 hrs last 2 days, and vomiting."
the lady responds "well it could be the flu but it may just be something viral, and since you have had whatever it is for 3 days you are probably on the upswing of it and it should go away soon"
me: "so you wont test me for the flu"
her " no it isn't necessary, just drink a lot of fluids"
me " nice to see how it is going to be when govt health care passes, you are a fucking moron and i left"
So i drove 1 1/2 hours back home to go to my local doctor to get the swine flu test....They confirmed i have a flu and that it is most likely h1n1.....I am infuriated at government workers...and the lady says a lot of students have been coming in with it, yet they do no testing which they are supposed to do. Can i sue or do anything about this since I asked for a test and was denied?
either way if this health care passes we are FUCKED

So you think they should test just about every one who gets the swine flu?
Well i guess you got another thing to blame the government. You right wing people are basket cases. Heard about the enemy of the state... that is you guys.
You know i really would love to sweep all of you up and deport you to some place without government , lets just say Texas and then let that experiment run its course for a good 10-15 years.

She and everyone in that clinic should sue you. Why the hell would anyone go around spreading the H1N1? I mean:" I have been very sick since tuesday with all the symptoms of the H1N1 flu" Even if you're not 100% sure - stay at home.
Christ!

all you European socialists are making me vomit now instead of the flu...hopefully you get the swine flu and someone in for family dies from it due to being turned down medicine or testing from it...then see what your response is.

Sadly, you are misinformed. The university may be public, but its employees are employees of the university. They are treated as if they are private employees, i.e. they are employees of X university, not employees of the government. The health insurance you have is also private insurance, purchased by the university. Probably a blue cross variety--pretty good insurance.

Kingpincarbs, there is no speaking with some of the liberals on this website. They are so biased and have their heads shoved so far up Obama's ass crack that they can't think clearly.
Obviously global health care means a lot less care, and a lot less QUALITY care. You will be turned back for plenty of "small" things... "oh it's just the flu" "oh your not 50 yet you can't have a mammogram" etc.
If you think the doctor doesn't give you the time of day right now, aka flies through your charts, diagnoses you, and sends you on your way... wait until they are on fixed pay, with no incentives to give quality care... and you are just another person receiving their free healthcare.

So what you're saying is that his experience with private individuals and private insurance is somehow translatable to a public system?
Makes sense to me.

You likely tested positive for Influenza A (of which H1N1 is a strain)
Unless treatment is started in the first 24-36 hours, antivirals are of little use.
The most important things to watch for are signs of secondary infection ( pneumonia, etc.) If you feel better for a few days then develop fever, cough, etc- you should be seen right away.
So, although the advice the lady gave you pissed you off, it was very likely accurate. If you want resources to be expended just because you have "coverage", that's another discussion...

Actually...
There is no commercially available test for H1N1-

first of all DJ, I do not have that insurance through them...that is a separate private health care that they offer. I am talking about the one that is given to every student which covers things such as a flu test. They work for the school yes, but the school gets their funds from the state taxes and from our tuition's. they get paid a flat fixed fee they do not get paid based on quality or number of people they diagnose. Hence i was turned away...it is the same thing as govt. health care just on a minor level. Again this is not private insruance that is an option to buy but I did not and i have the basic care that is given and it is for checkups and flu.

I agree government healthcare will be a disaster. Besides that, there realy isn't anything to do for swine flu except drink plenty of fluids, get rest, and stay home like she told you. Tamiflu cuts down the duration of the flu but not by much. What did your doctor do for you? Did he give you something?

yeah he gave me 10 tamiflu capsules to take 2 times a day for 5 days...he said it could continue for another week and that it will speed up recovery faster. It was good knowing i had it so i did not go out and give it to other people going back to my apartment and staying in until monday atleast but i had planned to go visit friends and family...had i not known i had a flu i would have done that and could have had many infected including my 4 month old niece.

1) The people at the university are no more government employees than the person who works at the local bank.
2) Your insurance is private. You can purchase it through the university as a group member, which overall, reduces the costs, but it is still through a private company.
But outside of these two little facts, your post had wonderful points.

except for the fact that, as RJ pointed out, if you have flu syptoms you're not supposed to go get it 'tested' - especially not after only 3 days.
So he never should have been there in the first place getting the proper advice and in turn blaming 'the government' because he doesn't like it.
