Phils don't do all that well playing at AT&T. Hamels will have to bring his A game to the bay area today. Does Howard hit one into McCovey's cove? I'm betting he does splash.

Philadelphia avoided heading west down 0-2 with a 6-1 win over San Francisco on Sunday night. Roy Oswalt rebounded from a poor start in game two of the NLDS against Cincinnati to a dominant performance in game two of the NLCS. Thought to be rusty against the Reds due to the long layoff between starts, he was anything but in this one, going eight innings while allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. He even did some damage at the plate with a single and run scored as part of a four run Philadelphia seventh inning. The Phillies are hoping they are breaking out of their postseason offensive slump that saw them end an 0-18 skid with runners in scoring position when Placido Polanco knocked in Oswalt from second. The big blow was a bases loaded double from slumping Jimmy Rollins that cleared the bases and gave him four runs batted in for the night. Philly sends 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels to the mound looking to duplicate his five hit shutout versus Cincinnati in the NLDS. He has done an about face from a poor season a year ago and should have more to show for his efforts in 2010, save the Phils mysterious lack of support whenever he toed the rubber.
Jonathan Sanchez as they say, ‘pitched well enough to win’ but the Giants bats were largely silent. First inning wildness with a bases loaded walk gave the home team a 1-0 lead and he lasted until the seventh when Oswalt singled, thus ending his night. Sanchez went six innings, while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks to saddle him with his first loss against Philadelphia in three 2010 starts. San Francisco’s problem continues to be a lack of punch at the plate, except for Cody Ross. The late season castoff of Florida has been a pleasant surprise at the plate for the Giants, launching two homeruns against Roy Halladay in game one, only to follow with another long ball against Oswalt. Not all that surprising to Philadelphia fans, who have seen him hurt them when he was with the Marlins. Now, if he could get the rest of the lineup to follow his lead, but not in this one as they managed just four hits causing manager Bruce Bochy to consider changes to the lineup for game three. He’ll hand the ball to Matt Cain who hasn’t pitched in ten days since being bumped back from Sunday’s start in favor of Jonathan Sanchez who had been 3-0 against the Phils. Cain hasn’t fared well in this match up, with a career mark of 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA in five starts.
The key for Philadelphia is getting a few runs for Hamels against a guy they’ve hit well and hope he continues to show that World Series MVP form he has for most of the year. San Francisco has the home field advantage but both teams flew west Sunday night so neither has more rest than the other. Don’t see a huge difference in the bats just yet but I do think Hamels has a slight edge.
