#5 Posted: 10/27/2009 1:19:31 AM Initial lean is to take the points.....Is Iowa good enough to be a 3 score fave? Plus they have been better ats on the road vs home where they had squeakers vs powerhouses such as N. Iowa, and Ark St.
SU is not a bad bet....considering the risk/reward involved, laugh now/cry later! |

#7 Posted: 10/27/2009 4:21:21 PM A little heads up guys...
Sounds like Adam Robinson is out for the year. Also, Brinson is out for the year. So Wegher is going to carry the load, and I think he is fully capable of that. We will probably burn Brad Rogers redshirt. I'm very excited to see what Rogers can do, just wish it wouldn't of come under these circumstances. In my oppinion, he is a lot like Shonn Greene and PJ Hill. He is 5 10 230 and finishes runs. He should be a GREAT change of pace back from Wegher. Obviously Im mad that Robinson is out for the year, but I think Rogers will do a fine job filling in. If we do indeed burn Rogers redshirt, We will have 5 above average sophmore RB's for next year. We have Jewel Hampton, are starting RB going into this year but tore ACL in spring, Adam Robinson who we all know, Brandon Wegher who we all know, Jeff Brinson who I really like but needs to stay healthy, He's been injured all season and just announced he'll have surgery on Thursday, and then there is Rogers who I just talked about. I repeat, all these guys will be SOPHMORES NEXT year.
To the other injuries from last Saturday. Sounds like Sandemen and Greenwood are going to be okay and play. Greenwood IMO is the most underrated player on our defense. Also, Sandemen is our punt returner so that is important to have him healthy. And then there is Dace Richardson. Poor guy. He is also out for the year and can't seem to ever catch a break. Luckily though we are deep here too. We just have to fill in Vandervelde in for Dace, who was a starter to start the year, but with the play of Bulaga got bumped out.
Now that we have all the injuries cleared up, let's talk about this upcoming game.
I expect to see a lot of new things from this offense this week. I think we will possibly go from shotgun early and often. I think we will be able to move the ball on the Indiana defense. I expect a huge day from DJK on Saturday. I'll also call that Wegher goes for 125 or more all purpose yards. I do expect our defense to play dominate on saturday. Our line will probably get a lot of pressure on the QB.
I'll say that Indiana barely covers here....

#10 Posted: 10/28/2009 11:14:53 AM Thanks for the info Hawkeye, but I probably speak for others when I say that when you say "who we all know" that we don't all know. We're not all up to speed on Iowa's underclassmen. Even though you're undefeated and beat our butts and maybe I should take better notes.
I am tempted to take Indiana and the points here too. Might even tease it to 24.5. Richardson and Robinson were certainly impact players on offense, were they not?
Indiana only lost by a last second FG to NU last week, but they got pretty banged up in the process. I see 10 guys listed as questionable on their injury report, all from last week's game. Will need an update on that before I bet on them. Any Hoosier fans who can elaborate please do.

#11 Posted: 10/28/2009 11:26:09 AM Iowa/Indiana is going to be a very interesting game.
Indiana's offensive strengths: Belcher, Willis, Doss, Chappell, Fisher.
Iowa's defensive strengths: Clayborn, Spievey, Angerer, Sash.
In my experience watching Indiana play I've noticed they like to run Willis to the left side. The left side is Clayborn's side. He's forced two running backs to fumble and rarely gives up a play over 5 yards over there. I don't expect Willis to get anything if that's the case.
Doss is fast, and tall, but how strong is he at the point of attack? Both Amari Spievey and Shaun Prater play bump and run coverage, and very consistently knock their man off their routes.
Is Chappell going to have enough time to let the Indiana WRs get in and out of their routes? Iowa's defensive line, most notably Christian Ballard, have really stepped up interior penetration on passing downs.
Ok, my computer is about to die. I'll finish this later. |

#12 Posted: 10/28/2009 4:06:21 PM Iowa's offensive strengths: Ricky Stanzi (yes he's a strength), Tony Moeaki, The OL, Derrell-Johnson Koulianos.
Indiana defensive strengths: Greg Middleton, Matt Mayberry, Jammie Kirlew.
Indiana ranks very poorly against the pass, and the run. Iowa doesn't exactly have a potent offense, but they manage to get things done. Johnson-Koulianos and Moeaki will give the Indiana secondary problems, as will Marvin McNutt.
Adam Robinson is hurt, Brandon Wegher is getting better every game. He's a true freshman with speed and a little bit of power. The OL, along with Wegher, seems to be improving every game, particularly Bryan Bulaga. If Bulaga and the OL are on all cylinders, the Indiana defense will have issues with the Iowa attack. Backing up Wegher is Brad Rogers, a 5'11 230 lb Shonn Greene clone with zero game experience but a few accolades from people in the know.
The Indiana special teams game has me interested. That's where the game could get close. Ray Fisher has taken a few to paydirt, and Iowa has a tendency to give up a forty or fifty yard return every now and then. I could see Ray Fisher taking one back. The Indiana punter isn't great, but he isn't bad either. Freeland, the kicker, has a decent percentage overral, but is 60% on the year from 30+.
I've thought this game over, yes Iowa is injured, pretty badly. Yes Indiana has had Iowa's number in the past. Yes, Iowa tends to have a clunker every year. This is the best Iowa team I can remember, and that includes 2002. I think you're going to see Ricky Stanzi basically take this game over, and Chappell commit a few untimely penalties. The Hawkeye strengths match up with the Hoosiers strengths, and the Hoosiers weaknesses don't match up with the Hawkeyes weaknesses. It's relatively uneven.
The 17.5 looked like a lot to me initially, not anymore. It's still quite a bit of points to expect Iowa to lay. Iowa can do it.
33-10 Iowa. |

I hope not. Originally it sounded like both were out. Apparently there has been some facebook chatter where Robinson posted something like "Looking to get back on the field as soon as possible" to whicch Dace Richardson replied to some extent "At least you can be back before Minnesota". I just stated that they were out for the year previously because KF said that Robinson is LIKELY out for the year, and all I read on Dace was he was most likely done.
And to Danstyk.
Sorry about the assumption. Robinson has been our main back all year and is all around pretty solid. He is a pretty sturdy guy. Hits the hole pretty well and doesn't fumble. Wegher on the other is more of a fast back and is great out of the backfield. This is why I stated that Rogers (the RB most likely to step up if in fact Robinson is out for the year) would be a nice compliment to Wegher.
And about the injuries... Both were key parts of the offense, but both are replacable. Vandervelde (who will be coming in for Dace) was a starter to start the year, but Reiff played so well when Bulaga was out he bumped him from his spot. So Vandervelde is expereriened and isn't your everyday backup you'd expect.
And I've already talked a lot about Robinson and the running situation. He was a key part, but is replaceable. To be honest, Robinson going into spring practice was probably our 4th rated back on the team |

#14 Posted: 10/28/2009 5:48:05 PM Indiana +17.5 or more... after Iowa's tough stretch they face lowely Indiana.. this is a good spot for a let down and Indiana will be stoked to play undefeated Iowa... and with a couple of key injuries to Iowa... I like Hawkeyes's score.. seems about right to me.. 28-13 or 28-17 something like that. Indiana +17.5 Sharp |

#15 Posted: 10/28/2009 6:50:50 PM Hawkeye my friend.......I like your thoughts on your squad. I'll be on IU with you......but your Hawks are finding a way to win every week.......now, if my Irish could only do the same for the rest of the year.......our worlds would be that much better! |

#16 Posted: 10/28/2009 8:08:35 PM Both will play against Ohio State. They each have a lesser version of the injury Moeaki suffered against Iowa State.

#17 Posted: 10/29/2009 12:36:04 PM Thanks for that Hawk, and good luck to you guys the rest of the year. I'm sure there's already talk around your way about getting squeezed out of the BCS. No matter -- just win and no one can steal your bragging rights.
Still I see this week as a letdown scenario. Ferentz is a great coach but the kids are human. Indiana often plays a spoiler role. I expect Iowa will survive it though. I'm thinking of a tease with Indiana + 17.5 and New Mexico St +51, plus another TBD, maybe Oregon +10 at home.

No No No No. You are not WITH me brother. I NEVER play any Iowa games. I may give out advice, but don't play them. If I bet with them, I'm afraid I'll be biased toward them and I dont wan't any line distracting me from the game. I dont wanna go out somewhat disappointed if I lose my bet but the Hawks win. Also, I would never bet against my team because If Iowa is up 10, no way in hell I would ever cheer for them to not score. I can not root against my team.

Nope. Dace BROKE his foot. He will most likely be out till the bowl game, maybe Minnesota, but I HIGHLY doubt he'll play against Ohio State.
Robinson has a very similar injuy. I'd say that there is maybe a 20% chance he plays against Ohio State. I would not say this is a lesser injury then Moeaki. Having a hihg ankle sprain for a RB is not good. Try cutting and making your moves with a bum ankle as a RB, it'snot fun.
Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE for both of them to play, but I would not get your hopes up |

Meant to say 10% not 20. And to me that seems pretty high |

#24 Posted: 10/31/2009 3:26:51 AM Iowa will win but not by much. they seem to do just enough to win week in and week out. The only time they won by more than 14 was early in the season against Iowa State (35-3). Indiana is halfway decent this year, remember the Michigan game (at the Big House) - bad call on the interception cost them the upset win.
I like Indiana +17..
