Tough call on the total. It really depends on who ultimately controls the tempo. If Wyoming gets the game at their speed, then there's a very good chance it stays under, especially with Wazzu largely playing zone. If the Cougs can't score in transition, they're going to have an awfully difficult time against the Wyoming halfcourt D. Lean to the under, but it's not enough for me to play it.

#106 Posted: 3/19/2012 4:21:13 PM On the Penn-Butler game...
For those who don't know, the Palestra is a ridiculously difficult place to shoot the ball because it's old as dirt, the sightlines are awful, and it's usually hot as hell (80 degrees today here, also). Butler is a terrible jump-shooting team to begin with and I don't like their chances against a Penn defense that plays a very aggressive, physical brand of man-to-man. Unfortunately for Penn, much of their offense runs through stud point guard Zach Rosen, who will face arguably the toughest on-ball perimeter defender in the country in Ronald Nored. When Rosen is taken out of his game, Penn tends to scuffle. None of the frontcourt guys can create their own shots and the offense is extremely reliant on Rosen's creativity. Bernardini is a solid second option, but he's been hampered by a foot injury and didn't play in last week's game against Quinnipiac. Word is that he is not nearly back at full strength but will suit up tonight. These are two really, really good defensive teams and the only way I can see points being put up in bunches is if the refs call a tight game and do not allow the teams to play physical perimeter defense.

Princeton-Pitt looks dead-on to me, but if you missed the Tigers at +7, do not take them now. You're betting into a really bad line considering it opened at 8.5 If Pitt wins by 7 or 8, you'll be kicking yourself big-time. Game largely depends on Princeton's ability to knock down shots and how interested Pitt is in winning a CBI title.
Only play I could make on TCU-Oregon State is the over. Both teams will go at a blistering pace and neither has shown much of a commitment to defense. There are some serious athletes on both sides and I'm intrigued to watch the Cunningham-Thorns showdown. I guess I'd take TCU if I had to pick a side but Oregon State has destroyed some teams at home when allowed to play at their breakneck pace. Those who have had success in beating the Beavs in Corvallis have been able to stymie their transition attack, and that just isn't TCU's game.

#114 Posted: 3/19/2012 5:33:43 PM As usual, great analysis on the Wyoming/Wazzu contest. I see this shaping up similarly to when the Cowboys played at Colorado and took the Buffalos out of their game, winning outright as 6 point dogs. I see a similar outcome tonight, although I gladly took the 3 points.

JFen: Miles Cartwright had a monster game for Penn against Quinnipiac. Perhaps he is stepping up his game to set the tone for next year when he will lead the team. He could be a difference maker tonight |

He's the x-factor on his Penn team, but I'm inclined to say that 23-point outburst may have been an aberration. Quinnipiac refused to let Rosen light them up, but Zack is obviously a tremendous all-around player and was happy to distribute to Cartwright all evening (9 assists). Part of it may have also been due to Bernardini not playing. Cartwright will probably draw one of the lesser Bulldog defenders tonight, and with Nored on Rosen, probably ends up with at least 12-15 points by game's end.

Possible 2nd half add if something worthwhile pops up.

#121 Posted: 3/19/2012 8:16:58 PM Like your tenn bet. Some thoughts about teams running the shot clock down. I havent seen many teams do it correctly as it always seems like they start to late. Have 8 or 7 secs and drive the ball get defending dribble back out and now your stuck. N.W did it all season Minny does it in many games lately and Purdue last nite. Purdue down by 1 timeout run a perfect play take a lead and then run another perfect play for a 3 point lead with 1.30 left. Never got a dece3nt shot off again. Turnovers and a couple bad shots. My point is what the hell got you the lead in the first place be aggressive dont dribble for 28 secs. I bring all this up because Im playing Minny tonite. Last game if Lasalle makes a few shots in the minutes its a new game. Against Wisc Minny blew a 9 point lead with less than 3 to go. Blew a lead against Ohio St. late Should of won in reg against N.W. and blew a lead when Mich guy makes a 3 with 2 secs left. They have played hard and think the ACC isnt that strong so Miami with the wins they have had are good ones but get them in a game against the top Big Ten teams and let see what happens. 6 points is alot have to play Minny. Always appreciate your thoughts and comments. |

I share your feelings on end-of-game situations. Too many teams wait until the last possible second and end up with a terrible, forced shot at best. As far as Minnesota/Miami, I went back and forth and couldn't come up with anything. Both coaches are awesome in the postseason and have played decent ball at the end of the year. Minny has had a big advantage inside with Sampson/Williams but I'm not sure they will tonight against Johnson. Is Miami still without Durand Scott? If so, I lean a little towards the Gophers. Their guards have gotten sooo much better as the season has progressed. You know this team well, so I have to think they play a good game tonight. I'll be rooting for them

Been there many times over my four years as a St. Joes student. The place has no air conditioning and if it's not 40 degrees or less outside, it feels like a sauna. The crowd is also really close to the court. Very difficult to adjust for teams who aren't used to playing in such a venue.
