I've come to realize recently how even I get caught up in my own world and forget there are real problems much greater than any of mine that exist in this world. I have a lot to be thankful for and the ups and downs of gambling or last second beats are so insignificant in the scheme of things.
I very much appreciate the comradery I have with many people here as to be quite frank, I don't really discuss any of this hobby with people that exist in my real world. This is my private hobby, escape and enjoyment. So while I have only met a few people in this community in person, I do appreciate many of you and the dialogues we have back and forth.
That is why I would like everyone to take a moment from the trivial nonsense that we bicker about here and think about something way more meaningful. I read in another thread that our friend, The_Outlaw, has passed away from injuries he suffered at the hands of a drunk driver. It is completely senseless and sad and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I have seen many people on Covers discuss drinking and driving, many laughing it off as meaningless. It is a serious problem in our society and the next time any of us goes out drinking while driving, I hope we can all think of people like Tom and all the other innocent families, who are ruined by this serious problem in our society.
While I did not know him very well, The_Outlaw (Tom), seemed like a solid and good guy. He was 38 and leaves behind a wife and three year old son.
I hope Covers can find out some more information about Tom from Vermont as I know I would personally like to make a donation to his son's future education in the memory of his Dad, our internet friend. I hope many others here will also consider it.
Please take a moment to think about and pray for Tom and his family.
We can chat about basketball a little later.

Well said bro! I have been looking for information on his death and contact information on his family but have been unsuccessful. I really think some type of fund would be nice. Thanks for the kind words GH.

I have friends who have died on both sides of drunk driving accidents. I myself, was charged with a DUI when I was 18 and had everything dropped. Then...just 2 years ago...I snapped out of a drunken state of mind and realized I was driving the wrong way down a city street in Baltimore. I recently had a baby boy...and have realized it is just stupid to even think about driving drunk. Most of the time it has been because I live about 2 miles from tons of bars and I would think it is cheaper than a cab. $10-$20 is more worth it then a life. Please keep us posted on any info. as I would like to make a donation also. I remember The_Outlaw and that is truly sad.

GH. It's awfully nice that you took the time out to express your sympathy for the Outlaw, his family and the situation that caused his death. I'm sure everyone here would love to help out the family in any way possible. Have been meaning to ask the same question but new around here and had hoped a veteran like yourself would initiate some type of action to start a fund. Hopefully his friend who notified us of his death can be contacted. Surely with all the money that's tossed around here we can all set aside a little something to make a difference. RIP Outlaw.

I'm not looking for any personal accolades but thanks.
I posted a message for C-T in the Covers Help section asking if they can find out any personal information on Tom and his family.
We've all made mistakes in the past. I remember one night driving drunk 28 years ago as drunk and naive teenager. Thankfully, I got home safely. Like Maverick11 was alluding to above, smart people do stupid things.
There's no place in our society for drinking and driving and it starts with educating our children. Incidents like this remind me that I will sit down with my children when the time is right and have a stern talk about the issue with each of them.
RIP Tom.
