#1 Posted: 11/5/2009 4:46:30 PM Been around this conference for a long time. A very competitive conference that has been known for it defensive presence. Anyways besides UNC, Indiana St. is my squad. Team has really been out of the mix since the Menser and Renn days but with what McKenna is rebuilding here things are looking bright for us Sycamore fans. We have bulit a lot of confidence from the end of last season winning 6 of our last 7 and almost knocked off UNI in the conference tourney.
Although we were picked 7th to finish in the conference this season I think we will surprise some of these teams that still returned quite a bit. Here is the preseason picks for the 2009-2010 season.
1. UNI 2. Creighton 3. Illinois St. 4. SIU 5. WSU 6. Bradley 7. ISU 8. Drake 9. Missouri St. 10.Evansville
We have talented group of freshman and transfers coming in that will contribute right away. Most guards but the big boys are coming next season as we landed a top 100 big man leading the class. We lost 3 kids from last season that combined for a AVG of 3.8 pts per game. Hardly any damage will be done with our scoring which is a major plus.
INCOMING PLAYERS
Lucas Eitel 6'4"
Logan Eitel 6'4"
Both are twins and both are very deadly from beyond the 3. These kids basketball IQ are just off the charts. What impresses me most about these 2 is that the chemistry they bring to the table is phenomenal. This team should really feed off these 2.
R.J. Mahurin 6'8"
Will more than like red shirt to put on about 20 more pounds. Footwork is very suspect and I expect them to really work on this all year. Preparing him for next season. Also he is very out of shape. What makes this kid so specail is he can play down low but he can step out as deep as 32 feet. Kid has some range and will create a lot problems for this conference.
Jake Odum 6'4"
Besides Kelly this kid is going to be a stud. Odum AVG 22 pts per game, 7 steals per game, and 8 assists per game all in the same conference of players such as: Robert Vaden, Armon Bassett, Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Eric Gordon, Josh McRoberts, Jake Kelly, and etc. Just wanted to name some of the big ones that came to my mind. This kid is a complete steal. Who was getting letters from all over the country to go play. He will be taking Harry Marshall's starting roll quickly. He is a major reason why Harry Marshall is suspended right now. Harry is not sitting to good with the competition. IMO though a player who originally was a walk on is still a walk on and belongs on the bench.
Dwayne Lathan 6'3"
A transfer form LA TECH. Can flat out jump out of the gym. Another athletic guard who I dont know to much about but I am going to look more into this kid tonight.
Jake Kelly 6'6"
Point guard/shooting guard. Built like Shawn Livingston and plays like him to. You all should know this kid by now with the performance he put on down the stretch of his sophomore season with IOWA. Very very talented and this is the reason why Indiana St. will come back to the Menser and Renn days. He was approved to play this season due to the death of his mother. I am not going into detail about Jake but if I must just ask. He has been called the "Great White Hope" in Terre Haute. HAHA.
This is going to be a exciting season for myself and I have not looked forward going to a State game until this group was brought in.
Anything you want to know just ask.

#4 Posted: 11/6/2009 11:25:26 AM Long day yesterday but I forgot one of the most pivital pieces to this group.
Koang Duluony 6'7"
This kid red shirted last season which was a very smart move as he only weighed a 150 pounds he is now pushing close to 180. He is very long and athletic and can step outside and shoot the 3 ball. Beside Jake Kelly this kids has potential to play at the next level.

#5 Posted: 11/6/2009 11:33:27 AM To summarize ST up this team is going to be under the radar for the first 10 or 12 games IMO. Mckenna and the AD have finally put a good schedule together playing in some big invitationals to start the season. They will kick of there season playing in the preseason NIT. 1st game will be down in Baton Rouge playing against LSU. Depending how this team gels over the next week or so they have a good shot at competing and we should catch a generous line. If St can compete on the glass they can compete.
They are very small down low which could lead to there biggest down fall. If I had to compare St to anyone it would be Butler a few years ago. Very crafty, intelligent, plays team ball, and can flat out shoot the 3 ball. You could go top to bottom on this roster and I bet 10 kids can flat out shoot it from deep. This might be a nightmare for even the best teams in the Missouri Valley if St is on. Really looking forward to this group and the things to develop over the course of the season.

#7 Posted: 11/6/2009 5:37:01 PM You guys got a hell of a player in Jake Kelly. My Hawkeyes are really going to miss him. He should have a very good year playing in the MVC.

Thanks TROE hard to see him leave the Big 10. He grew big time at the end of last season. He is still trying to get affiliated with the new team mates but hes is coming along quickly.

#10 Posted: 11/11/2009 10:38:45 AM Indiana State is way under rated this year.I can see them in the top two in the MVC. They got a few good players returning, Harry Marshal, Rashad Reed, and Jordan Printy. Watch out, here come the SYCAMORES! |

Anyways Quick update on the Sycamores. News hit today as they have decided to redshirt Jake Odum, the Eitel twins along with R.J. Mahurin. This could be a great move for the future.
Lathan is also suspended for the first 2 games as he sat out today the Sycamore steam rolled Kerney. He will sit out for COL ST then be ready for the Baton Rouge showdown.

Much improved the Freeman kid they added from one of the nation top Jucos will help tremendously with the mix they have. What can I say SIU is SIU yes they have had a couple down year but things are on the up and up and they will be contending for the Conf. title come seasons end. Front court is still a big question though.

#15 Posted: 11/13/2009 9:54:00 PM UNC GOOD LUCK TO YOUR SYCAMORES. VALLEY WILL BE COMPETITIVE AGAIN THIS YEAR BUDDY. I, OF COURSE BEING AN ILLY ST ALUM HAVE TO PULL FOR MY REDBIRDS. THEY ARE YOUNG BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE TWO FRESHMAN THEY SIGNED FROM THE STATE OF MISSOURI. ONE WAS LEADING SCORER AND THE OTHER THE STATE'S LEADING SHOT BLOCKER. MY FEELING IS IT WILL TAKE THEM A BIT OF TIME TO GEL BUT WITH OSIRIS THERE ONE MORE SEASON, I FEEL THEY WILL BE IN THE MIX COME MARCH. ANY THOUGHTS BUDDY? |

#17 Posted: 11/13/2009 11:08:43 PM midway through last year I started seeing some great things from Indiana State. These kids will play tough. They were awesome ATS the last half of the year.
UNC, Thanks for your time and effort. You may have noticed but I live and breath college hoops myself. I put in Ridiculous amount of time working all angles. |

#18 Posted: 11/13/2009 11:25:48 PM Great stuff and I couldn't agree more. ISU is one of my top "Bet on" teams heading into this year. I had my eye on them because I made some nice coin during their run late last year. I think you are right, they could be a big surprise in the Valley this season. Good luck and I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on the MVC. |
