Macedonian outfit Rabotnicki were worthy champions in their domestic league and displayed attractive attacking soccer. However, they have lost Ilioski, Manevski, Zajkov, Todorovski, Gifu, Stoychev and Petrov, with Manevski, Zajkov, and Todorovski of particular importance. Rabotnicki have attempted to make up for these losses by acquiring players from recently relegated sides. One positive transfer that they have managed is the acquisition of starlet Anene from Valerenga. He is only 21 years old, and can be wasteful, but he has the potential to dominate the Macedonian league. Most of us are, by now, somewhat familiar with HJK Helsinki. Since I’m writing quite a few write-ups and am short on time (as I’m sure you can see from some of my posts today), I’m going to be short with HJK here. What I will say is that they are a very good Finnish side and have not lost in fifteen matches. Their league is in full swing so they are match fit. Additionally, HJK had a very disappointing Champions League campaign last time out, going out in this round to Nomme Kalju of Estonia. I’m sure they will want to improve this time out and they have the quality to do so. I’m going to take Under 2.5 Goals @ 1.70

I would understand some people backing Levadia Tallinn of Estonia. Their league campaign is midway while Sparta have yet to play a competitive match this season. Levadia Tallinn are coming off back to back 7-0 victories. That is extremely impressive. Sparta Prague have had some very good transfers this window. They lost Vaclik, but they brought in Slovakian attacker Breznanik as well as Nestor, Stech, Kovac and Bicik. Last season they were relentless goal scorers, and with the added quality in their team now, I think it will be more of the same. Levadia only managed a nervy 1-0 first leg victory over La Fiorita of San Marino before they crushed them 7-0 at home. That’s the thing with sides from Estonia, however. They play very well within Estonia but are a little naïve when it comes to playing outside their borders. They have a very young squad and they will struggle against the experienced Czech side. Helpfully, Sparta Prague recently crushed Basel in a friendly match, 4-0, showing that they are in decent attacking form. In my opinion, Sparta Prague are by far the best team in the Czech Republic and should have more than enough to easily see off the Estonian side. **I’m taking Sparta Prague -2 @ 1.80*

Many are really down on this edition of Dinamo Zagreb. There are a couple reasons for it, with which I can agree. They can be a frustrating bunch who seem to be more concerned by their individual play than the result of the team. Additionally, they have just started their campaign whereas their opponents are well into their league. They struggled in their Super Cup match against Rijeka where their defense looked a little slow. Most importantly to fans of Dinamo, the supporters are upset that Zdravko Mamic, owner of the club, has installed Zoran Mamic as the manager. Many supporters believe he has little soccer knowledge. Zalgiris are a decent Lithuanian side, but they are not good enough to compete at this level. They have a predictable attack and they are often wasteful when they do create chances. The bottom line is that Dinamo still have the best side in Croatia and there still exists a massive talent gulf between these two sides. They have been in this position often where they bring in many new players in the transfer window and should be unsettled when the first Champions League qualifier comes up. They have still managed eight wins and only one loss in their Champions League Qualifiers in the last three years. I’m going to be taking Dinamo Zagreb -2 @ 1.90

HB Torshavn managed to overcome Lincoln Red Imps in the last round of Champions League Qualification in order to meet Serbian giants, Partizan Belgrade. It would be a bit of a shock to see the side from the Faroe Islands overcome one of Serbia’s biggest teams over two legs, and I very much doubt we will see that happening. Torshavn do have a few things going for them, however. Their league is in full swing and they have already played a prior round of Champions League matches, so we know they are fit. This is already the farthest they have advanced in the Champions League, and the return of creative attacking midfielder Mouritsen makes them dangerous enough going forward. In addition, former Newcastle United man Edmundsson looked dangerous going forward, if a little wasteful. The good news is that he scored against Lincoln Red Imps and that can only help his confidence. HB Torshavn’s attack is going to cause problems for either themselves or Partizan. The truth is it is a little frenetic, but that can unsettle the opposition as much as it can be a waste to their own side. I could see them scoring in this match. Regardless, the real reason I’m taking this wager is because of the current situation Partizan is facing. The President of the club was arrested a few days ago due to financial fraud in his private company. As such, they have only bought one player in the current transfer window, defender Ilic, but he isn’t registered for today’s match. In addition, there are rumors they are going to be forced to sell their best player Lazovic to AEK. In the friendlies leading up to this match, Partizan were very impotent. Now, I have a little bit of fear in backing HB Torshavn here because their defense can be a little inattentive. That being said, I think they would be thrilled with a result that leaves them a chance when the leg returns to Torshavn. Given Partizan’s current situation, I don’t see them blowing HB Torshavn out. I’m going to be taking Under 3.5 Goals @ 1.93 AND HB Torshavn +2.5 @ 1.98
