I'm an electrician living massachusetts and wondering why I was ordered by the courts to pay $300 a week, while a high school dropout friend of mine pays $20 a week. It seems like you get punished for actually trying to do something with your life. Is this fair?

Guessing your friend makes minimum wages and doesn't work full time.  $20 a week isn't shit.  Is your child support due to a divorce or knocking up some bar person?  Child support based on your income, that's why the person that hang around NBA players feels like they hit the lottery when they get knocked up by a pro athlete.

Its based on my income. So what happens if I lose my job? Or get injured? I can't pay $300 a week. And how do i know it's getting spent the right way?

The State always sucks as much money as possible out of working parents.  They protect themselves from having to pay for welfare, medical, and any other costs possibly incurred.  When the State gets involved in any Domestic affair, you get fucked.

If you lose your job they will  adjust it but they are your kids right. You will have no control over how it is spent unfortunately.

I was fortunate to work out a descent deal with my ex-wife for my daughter. Of course, I would suggest to pay in check/money order only. Never! Never cash.
Like BestPlay2Day mentioned. The child support is based on your salary.
You can google child support for your state to get the rates.
 
There are also petitions started on some states to try and lower the amount on child support.
 
I have no problem supporting my child. However, I do believe the courts have fathered the mothers alot more. I have seen divorced mothers go and buy big screen TVs and other luxuries with the money they have been receiving from child support.
That is what bothers me most. You don't ever know what and how the money is being spent on.

you dont know its getting spent the right way, you dont even know if your child is recieving the money, mother could be keeping it, im sure if you lose your job or get injured they will keep charging you some amount and you will owe when you do get a job..nothing you can do but pay... this is all just an opinion by the way.. but i do know people that are in jail for non support so i wouldnt tamper with anything...also in my area on the news they fnid you and get you live on the news and under your picture it says "dead beat dads" for the ones that owe.. and im pretty sure that is just embarassing...

I have known friends and even my own brother who avoid divorcing their wives just to avoid paying the child support.
Like they say "It's Cheaper To Keep Them".
and the can't be so true.
They are still miserably married.

My friend has a long way to go. I've known him since childhood. He comes to my house to drink his sorrows away. I try to keep him as upbeat as possible.

It is not a good feeling when you are not happy with your spouse. But, have no where to go with the amount of child support you will be due to pay. Honestly, after you pay off your child support, rent and utilites (not even including necessities like food and clothes), you have very little to live with. Very sad. I would be so depressed like my friend.

I know people who could have nice jobs. But, because of child support, they rather get an off the books job to just live in this economy.

I don't understand what you are trying to question here.  Obviously the system is built around your income.  so you have to pay the pied piper.   just hope the mother of your child is blowing it on breast implants and coke.

I've been paying since "93. For two kids it was just over $700/month............more than my mortgage. So obviously I sld the house. (I have only 4 more months til my youngest turns 18) 
  You learn to adjust............what else you gonna do, quit life?
 
  You have the right (in WA anyway) to request receipts showing where your support is going. The ex cannot use it all on rent/mortgage.........they need to show that the kids are getting some of the support.
 
 My atty suggested letting the state garnish my wages for the support...........an idea I hated.............& he was right. That way there's no temptation for you not to pay & no way the ex can come back at you & say "you didn't pay!".

Besides from child support, the spouse gets half of your a$$ets or whatever pecentage they can get out of you.

I'm not saying $20 if fair, but maybe about $150 would be fine. I guess if you fall behind they can garnish your wages and they can take 50% of your pay and that is before taxes. Never mind the thought of jail and getting my license's suspended.  What is the purpose of throwing a guy in jail? He only falls further behind and comes out with no job and probably has a lot more debt.

If you have a child/children you gotta pay.......plain and simple....
 
I dont have any youngens but i've got friends that have to live with their parents and drive shit cars because they have to pay so much.....Its a bad deal all the way around for the kids and parents.

I have two boys, 5 and 8. I pay about 600 a month, but they also stay with me 2-3 days a week depeding on my work schedule. This is an agreement between me and their mother. She is a reasonable person (sometimes), and knows if she took me to court that amount would be a great deal more. She realizes that I woulodn't be able to make it in my current situation if I paid more.
 
In most of these situations, the kids suffer because the father pays so much to the mother that he can't afford to get the kids anything as far as toys, bikes, clothes, etc. And, the money the mother gets usually goes to a roof over their heads, and she also doesnt have the extra loot to get them anything.
 
I know for a fact that my kids mother takes my 600 and puts it toward the rent which is 900 per month. And, she doesnt live in a really nice house or anything, thats cheap fo around here.

150 a month for support?

Lets break it down.

150 a month based on 30 days means you are giving 5 bucks a day, how much food will 5 bucks a day provide? How about clothing? How about school supplies? How about activities? How about utilities? How about housing?

600 a month is probably a little light, I doubt anyone is living the high live on 600 a month, 150 is below poverty.

Thats fine too.

600 a month is not living high on the hog at all.

Thats 20 bucks a day for all living expenses, better than 150 a month but given the cost of living that surely wont cover the needs in most areas and age groups.
