Whats the proper amount to tip a blackjack dealer?

So Kodiak knocked me in my Vegas thread about me not tipping enough. Leads me to wonder what people SHOULD be tipping at a table.

 

How are you at a table, compared to the amt you are betting and what not?

depends on how friendly the dealer is.

Some dealers want you to win ( more tips for them, in theory )

 

Some dealers get offended when you win, and act like it is THEIR money

 

Every new shoe, I make it a point to bet 10 for the dealer( I am a 50 and up better )

I keep the 10 out there for the duration of winning hands ( once started a shoe with 20 straight non losing hands ( 18 wins, 2 pushes )

By the time the run ended, I was betting table max ( 2000 a hand )

 

Dealer was truly happy for me, and we exchanged some information ( when she was done with her shift )

( I gave her a 1000 tip after her shift ended )

dealers would rather have you bet the money, for some reason, maybe it looks better for the pit bosses. But if you throw them 5 or 10 they will say to just bet it for them, even though they have a 50% chance of losing it.

I also "double up" tip wager, if I double down or split

 

 

To me, it all depends on the dealer as mentioned above. If the dealer is talking and you can tell they really want you to win, then depending on how much I am playing and how much I am winning will determine the amount I tip. I almost always bet it for them though.

 

I usually play $100 hands. If I am doing good I will bet $25 for them per shoe.

I place a wager for the dealer  every 3rd hand up to half my bet...

 

It seems to keep them happy and keep you winning

I had tipped 10 bucks and then played some with the dealer, probably 5-8 bucks.

 

I was playing 15 buck hands...at times 20-25...and kodiak slammed me and insulted the crap out of me. Some people on covers just dont know how to tell someone their opinion without  being a dick about it.

 

Also, the lady was extremely unfriendly at times...had an attitude...

From every thing I've read, they'd rather have you bet for them than tip.

 

 

Me? I'll go once a shoe minumum. Winning streak? Gotta keep going? You're on a streak right?

 

Losing like crazy? Throw them a bone after 30 minutes. And if you been losing for 30 minutes, get the fuck outta there!

hey amazin, what kind of info did the dealer give you?  i play alot & would love any info that helps getting on the winning side.

When was the dealer unfriendly to you? Before or after you were winning all that money?  You said you played 1 hr.10 min. and made $335, tipping the dealer $10. What percentage is that? 3%?  Maybe the dealer was thinking, "Geeze, this guy is doing well on my table. He's up a good amount of money. Seems to me that he would do the right thing and take care of me, since I'm taking care of him." I know I wouldn't be happy with that. On top of that, if the dealers happen to give you advice on how to play, and you win, you should take care of them. The dealers WANT you to win. They make their money from the players. They make a few bucks an hour and rely on tips to make money. Besides that, if the casino is taking care of you with comps or putting you up in their hotels, they are putting good faith that you are going to take care of their staff: dealers, valet, servers, bartenders, housekeeping, etc. I wasn't trying to ruffle your feathers. Just merely stating my opinions and observations. I work in the industry. The dealers are trying to make a living. 

I gave a guy about $8000 the other day dealing blackjack. On one of the hands, he was playing 3 spots, $500 on each. He had 18, 18 and 15 on his three hands. There was one other guy on the table, a young kid who looked like he just turned 21. Well, this kid bet $25, and had 13. My up card was a 5. This kid was going to hit his hand. I told this kid that it wasn't a good play, that he should stay and let me bust. He stayed on his hand. I flipped my hole card over and it was a face card. That gave me 15. I took a hit and the next card was a face card, and I busted. The guy who played the 3 $500 hands was all ecstatic because I busted and he won. He told the kid thanks and gave him $100. The kid said, "Don't thank me, thank the dealer. He told me to stay and it worked." The guy said nothing and didn't tip me shit. Well, the next card after that was a 5. If that kid had hit, he would've busted and I would've had 20. That's a $3000 swing for that guy- $1500 he would've lost, $1500 he would not have won. I pointed that out, and then the guy says "Thanks man." I'm thinking to myself, "Thanks? That doesn't pay my bills you fucking cocksucker." He tips this young kid who doesn't know how to play, I save his ass, and he stiffs me. He ended up winning $8000. On top of the fact he's saying "Thanks man. I needed this." And I'm thinking, "Choke on it, prick." Anyways, just an example of how the dealers should be taken care of when you're winning. Thanks.

 

Regarding tipping: If I play $10 to $15 a hand, I'll get some change for some $1 chips. I'll put a $1 chip out on the edge of the betting circle for the dealer. For each $1 chip I put out there for them, I put a $1 chip on my hand. If I win, the dealer wins too. And, I won the $1 chip that I bet for the dealer on my hand. So when I win, the dealer's toke(tip) is covered on my hand. So, the house is paying me to pay the dealer. And I just keep doing it.  If I play bigger, I'll bet bigger for the dealer. I think that's a great way to tip the dealers. Then they see you're trying to help them out, as well as the pit bosses. That will help you get more comps. If you choose to tip when you're done playing, a general rule of thumb is tip 10% of what you win.

Unfriendly dealers, fuck them. They get nothing.

Kodiak, the dealer was unfriendly FROM the GET GO. I was winning slightly early, but she had one of those "get me out of here attitudes" and it was annoying. I know what you mean about the dealer helping out, but I dont need the dealer for BJ, I can play this game in my sleep or insanely drunk.

 

I did not know the general rule for tipping was 10%. In fact, most people I see playing do not tip 10%.

Also, how does the dealer know that Im not going to throw her her tip at the end? I just dont like unfriendly dealers. There was a guy inside who I vibed with for a while and was cool. I tipped him better for sure, but watching most people play, I even see some people not tip, which I hate.

Lastly, I dont like casinos where the dealers share their tips, that makes me not want to tip as much because if Im tipping well, its because I like THAT dealer, not say someone else who is unfriendly.

Unfriendly dealers will get me throwing bets out there to try to get them to warm up to me and the table.......if it does not, then I try to win as much as I can from that table and not tip or color up from them before I leave.

 

 

Being a dick/asshole can go both ways. 

If Im playing 15 a hand, I throw out a 5 every 15 minutes or so, no matter how I am doing. Some dealers have me bet it for them, some don't. I also always tip out at the end.

i dont have a set amount i tip these guys.  i usually put them in play every so often and make them earn there money so to speak.  when im done ill give them another tip if i won.

people have a bad gambling habit of playing and tipping with "house money" when they have won and this fallacy of winning and then playing with money that is not yours is just bad gambling...

 

The flip side of course is the chasing trying to win "your money" back when in in reality the money now belongs to house...

 

What I do when I am on a losing streak is rather then playing the last of my chips I just tip the dealer and walk, I would have lost it anyway at that point...  I try not to gamble with the "just heck with it" attitude and playing till I run out of chips...  It is good to make choices...

 

I guess we all play and tip differently...
