Help: Im going to court for an underage DUI

So after a night of drinking somehow I got into my car and totaled it on the right side of the freeway. My car flew over some bushes and directly hit and knocked down a light post. Was sent to detox for a night and they let me go the next morning. Dont remember the accident or the night AT ALL 
I'm 20 and before I get any legal help, I've been asking several people as to how approach this.
I live in California, my main questions:
What's life with a DUI like as far as the legal and monetary consequences?
Some people suggest that I shouldnt get an attorney but that sounds dumb.
I've been told to plead not guilty regardless otherwise I'll get max penalization.
I'm frustrated, obviously ashamed of what I put myself through. I'm ready to face this year, accept it and I'm going to try to approach with the best attituted possible but I'm already feeling pretty frustrated at the fact that I have no transportation...it sucks.

i hope you get hit with every penalty in the book, drinking & driving is by far the stupidest thing a human being can do.  You sir are officially a moron

Hello were you born yesterday, he made a HORRIBLE mistake, im sure could have killed someone, but does that make it right for him to not have a second chance?

Your the moron here, wake up, this shit happens EVERY SINGLE DAY, this is the way of the world.
People have problems, he needs help.
You can only hope he WILL learn a lesson from this, sometimes when negative things happens, it turns out to be REALLY positive, he can help others learn through out the rest of his life.

These are problems we are dealt with, mistakes, just like in preschool or elementary school we were given problems to solve, these kind of problems are the ones on a more "life learning" basis as we get older, everything happens for a reason and im sure this was going to happen sooner or later.

shut the fuck up man...young kid made a mistake and fucked up...1st dui, big fucking deal...where im from you aint got atleast one dui you are considered either very strange or very god damn lucky.

Amazing that there are that many morons out there that still think driving drunk is cool or ok.
 
I really hope it doesn't ever happen to you but if you ever have a loved one get hurt or killed by a senseless moron who decided to drink & drive, you'll fully agree with my views.
 
I can't believe there are still people out there that think this is ok.
 
 
If I go and rpe a child next week and then say "oh, im sorry, i was drunk and i realize it's a horrible mistake" - does that mean I should be forgiven?  Give me a fucken break.  You do the crime, you do the time.

You should be charged with drivin under the influence, attempted murder & for doing damage to public property

this kid is young and he made a mistake...
 
as for the peice of shit DUI laws they are a joke...fuck, .08 for christs sake....thats a couple of cold ones on a empty stomach...them are the people i feel sorry for...the poor bastards that stop after work for a couple, go home and are ran into by someone or make a simple traffic violation...then they lose their fucking jobs or whatever else...now thats bullshit.
 
yea its terrible when you lose a loved one to a drunken accident by some idiot that is fall down drunk...but hey man shit happens.
 
i just think people overlook some of the other victims involved with these fucked up laws.

again im not defending the dudes that hammer down a case and then go jump in their car... im defending the poor bastards that cant drive their own fucking car to and from somewhere and casually sit and drink a 6 pack and not worry about some asshole cop fucking up their life...

This is not one of those instances.

The kid totaled his car and could of killed someone or himself.

seriously.. from a legal standpoint A) he shouldn't have been drinking B) he's shouldn't be drinking and driving -- they're gonna throw the book at him.

CA DUI laws are pretty harsh and will get him in fines/penalties also.

That said, I'll piss on the fire here a bit.  Funny thing about the drunk driving laws (and hype), nobody really cared about this shit til the mid to late 1980's. Ever wonder why?  Here in the US at least, it turned into a political campaign soapbox issue at that time.  Just like Nixon's war on drugs in the 60's and Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No."
 
Nobody gave a shit about drunk driving from 1910~1982. Just ask any adult born before 1960.  How did mankind survive with all those drunk drivers on the road??   I don't condone drunk driving, nor do I make it a habit.  It's all about politics and their contributors, ie; big insurance.

Try to get Paris or Lindsays lawyer.. then ull only get about 10 hours in jail. Youll be back drinking and driving in no time

revenge, i don't condone drunk driving or driving under the influence, but you make it sound like you have never made a mistake? get serious man, everyone fu$ks up here and there
 
 
a7a8...........getting a lawyer is a must. when it's all said and done you'll pay anywhere from a grand too two grand with fines and lawyer fees.  If you were 16 or 17 yrs old your license would be taken away until you were 21, so you are lucky that you are 20. Chances are your license will be taken away for a complete year  , but a restricted license will be given. Driving to work, doctors office, etc. will be permited.  ( granted all of these statements are correct pending a lawyer so make sure you get one)  If I am correct, in CA, three dui or dwi commits to a felony. Might even be two? So don't let this happen again.  If the judge is a prick, you might have to do community service hours on the weekend.  Estimated 300 hrs, if he assigns it. 
 
 
I am confident this is what you will be looking at, if not exact, very similar.  Good luck with everything.
 
P.S-  you state you are twenty which makes it possible that you are a college student.  I hope you are not involved in any kind of education program, cause you are basically done in that career path.

I've made mistakes in my life but never 1 that almost cost someone else their life.
 
Giving someone a car when they're intoxicated is like giving someone a gun in a mall and saying "go ahead, try it out"
 
There are millions of people out there that haev lost a loved one because some dumbass has decided not to take a taxi home, not to get a ride from a buddy, not to stay over or even walk home.  No, he has to drive home drunk and kill someone on the way
 
I just can't fathom why any moron out there woudl think this is ok
