I would hope that this site is not an accurate barometer of the general publics feelings towards cops ... the hatred and mistrust of cops from so many who post regularly here is a little disturbing.
I suppose it's not a coincidence that this site also has so much banter regarding racism. It seems that gambling attracts a large percentage of people who have an inability to recognize there is good and bad in all people, regardless of their race, religion, or profession.
Being a cop doesn't make you a crook, no more than being black gives you a right to be a racist. In both cases, one has nothing to do with the other ... but the racist, who is so willing to judge a person based upon the color of their skin, is also prone to judging someone based upon the uniform that they wear.
People should be judged by their individual actions, nothing more ... but not here at Covers.com.
Again, I like to think that this site isn't indicative of the public in general ... is it?

as i mentioned in the thread with the video of the ohio cop shooting the idiot driver, i think these periodic postings of alleged police brutality posted to criticize cops actually has the opposite effect.
first, in just about every post, the other idiot is breaking the law and/or resisting arrest and the cop gives them opportunities to comply before force is used.
second, there are thousands of cops in this country who have hundreds of thousands of interactions with the public every year. if you are trying to tell me how most, many or even a lot of cops are bad and yet the bst you can do is come up with one questionable story or video every week or two in this age of video cameras and phones, surveilance cameras on the streets and youtube, that's a very weak case you are making.

For every time a cop is caught on video, he gets away with it at least 1000 times. So if it one cop a week on video, that is at least 1000 if not 10,000 questionable acts not caught on video.
Suburban cops and Highway patrol cops are probably OK on the most part, but city cops are a different story. On a force of 200 city cops, I'd say there are maybe 20 that aren't crooked. The other 180 are dealing drugs, using drugs, extorting money from drug dealers, bookies and pimps, extorting sex from hookers and strippers, roughing up minorities, or worse.
I witnessed police brutality once in West LA. A van full of cops pulled up next to a Mexican guy. They dragged him to the side of the van not facing a lot of people and beat the crap out of him with their batons. When he had enough, they took off, and left him on the street. I don't care what the Mexican guy did, he has rights and cops should not be doling out punishment.
People that become cops are not normal people. They either like the power or have a fascination with crime. If they don't become cops, they probably would be criminals.

I'm normally on the side of the cops but I'm beginning to despise them. I've already been stopped 3 times for doing nothing more than driving the posted speed limit.
Then another time a cop drives up next to me and turns on the flood lights almost blinding me while I'm doing 75.....

Yeah, when a copy pulls me over next time, I guess I won't prejudge him. Maybe his individual actions will surprise me and he's just coming to the window to wish me a pleasant day.

Based on my experience and also it is harder and takes more credentials to be a sheriff (college education)... which eludes to patience, intelligence, personal resolve, resiliency, etc... and ofcourse pay, the sheriff is more qualified and therefore is better paid...
If the police standards were as high as the sheriff's perhaps things would not be as bad...
also police who are lower in education and status then feel like they need to flex their muscles and attitude in power trips, feeling inferior etc... They usually have more back up ability and quick to call other cops and shit then goes down with back up, doing things they wouldn't do if they were not above the law at that point...
Sheriffs are usually in charge of a larger area and more isolated and need to make smart, responsible and prudent decisions...Thus the higher qualifications...
Police have this reputation for a reason... They are not qualified to wield the power they have and it gets abused...

I had to move my car the other day because a sign got posted (after I parked) that parking was prohibited between certain hours, a temporary thing. One of my neighbors knocked on my door (very early) to tell me before I got a ticket/towed. When I got to my car I hollered over to the cop that the sign wasn't there when I parked, meaning it apologetically. He pulled his car up next to mine and asked me why I was being a smart ass - I really wasn't, I was just stating a fact and he took me the wrong way, and he was a real dick about it.
About an hour later I saw the reason that the temp signs were up - there was a funeral for a cop.

Years ago, when I was on the wrong side of the law in a few little "deals" of one kind or another I despised the cops. After I cleaned up my act and quit doing all those "deals" and traffic violations I found out that MOST are not so bad. There are still assholes and smart-alecks out there but they are gradually being weeded out and there are authorities over them if they get caught mistreating or abusing. Since I mostly quit speeding (the 70-75 mph limit on interstates is a wonderful thing) I get along fine. If I do get stopped for a traffic violation, I am matter-of-fact and polite. If you get pulled over, just keep your hands on the wheel until the cop comes to your window or gives you other directions, day or night. If you don't wise off, they usually will not. Of course, I am not a minority so I don't know if I would be treated the same way. Treat them the way you would like to be treated.
