The dad of a newborn baby has died after "downing" a bottle of tequila in a nightclub without stopping.

Kelvin Rafael Mejía took part in the stunt in the Dominican Republic in an effort to secure prize money of 40,000 pesos – the equivalent of roughly £680.

He could be seen standing on stage of the Vacca Lounge club in the city of La Romana and completing the challenge as dozens of spectators took images with mobile phones and cheered him on.

However, as the 23-year-old neared the end of the bottle, he could be seen needing support and had to be held to remain upright.

After ingesting the full bottle, Mejía raised his arms in jubilation and remained conscious long enough to be handed his prize money, but seconds later could be seen wobbling around before collapsing.

I attempted this in the mid 4th quarter of the superbowl when Atlanta's defense snapped on their chin straps.
Sprayed liquor, salsa chips all over the wall and survived.

I drank a 1.75 bottle of New Amsterdam Vodka over a twelve hour bender last week.  You need to pick your poison.  Tequila will get you every time.

Too bad the kid has to grow up with no father.

In my drinking heyday, I drank a bottle of Patron over the course of a evening/wee hours of the morning.  I was only 5'10, 165 IBS at the time so that's kind of a lot.

Was sloppy and had intervals of blacking out.  Dangerous stuff when you drink in excess like that.

This kid is just stupid/reckless.

Darwin Award nominee, no doubt.

Goose

The weekend football benders used to get me a few years back.....Mike's Hard Pink lemonade on Saturday morning, 18 pack Coors Light with a 5th of Jim Beam in the afternoon/evening.

Try to come down on Sunday.....especially if I cashed a few tickets on Sat.....red wine and another 12 pack. Usually felt dead until Wed.

Gotta hang up the drinking shoes sooner or later...

Doesn't say how large of a bottle this guy "downed without stopping".
But those are the key words.  !.75 bottle, 80 proof, over 12 hours is very doable.

Never did this in one drinking session, but I was awfully close.  I was admitted to St. Joes in Paterson with a BAL of .36.  Doctors were amazed that I was still conscious and functioning.  That's almost death level to the inexperienced drinker.  Hospital is a lot better than a county jail so I opted to go rather than spend time in the drunk tank.

They had to give me Ativan for the DTs after I started coming down and was monitored for seizures.

Like I said, excessive drinking is a very dangerous game.  I was alcoholic level of a drunkard.  I don't phuck around with that anymore.  I'm only 31 but probably have the liver of a 60 year old man.

I once drank a 5th of JD over the course of a Saturday during CFB season........& then went out later (thanks to some overzealous friends).......bad idea.
I couldn't imagine downing a half gallon in one day.

I looked into the liver damage issue.....like most things, it is unique to each person, but has largely been overblown by the media. Many health concerns from alcohol are actually reversible:

http://www.rehabs.com/are-the-effects-of-drinking-too-much-reversible/

Is excessive drinking good? No. Is alcohol addictive? Yes. If you quit will the body repair itself? Yes.

But wow, .36 is monster. I won a contest with a home-breathalyzer at .22 and could still function pretty well...but things were getting hazy. A BAC of .36 is a monster.

Yours was probably higher than a .22.  Blood tests that they do at the hospital are a lot more accurate.  Spoke w/ other alcoholics in AA meetings and they were around the same.  Spoke w/ a guy who had a .39.

I agree that it could be reversible.  Since I stopped boozing, eating right and exercising, I'm a completely different person; mentally and physically.

DTs are no joke.  When I had problems doing something as simple as writing, I knew I had to stop.

On a 12 hour blackjack marathon at the old O'sheas I was told by the cocktail waitresses I drank 30 Miller High Lifes. Kind of weak actually, only 2.5 beers per hour.
