Who are these people you are referring to? I'd expect a person who has lost a lot of money and has trouble paying their bills because of that would say it's bad. But that just means it is bad for them. For some it's fine.
Drinking is bad for some. Fine for others. No different.

Personally I think it's silly and wrong for anyone to think betting or anything else is immoral so long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. It's okay to have a bad view on betting, or a negative opinion of it, but it's not okay to have a negative opinion of the person doing it. He enjoys it... it's his money...

In the United States, sports gambling is mostly illegal according to various laws except in a few places such as Las Vegas. Oddly, risky lotteries and interstate horse racing bets are allowed. Casinos and some professional leagues are opposed to legalization.

Especially, if you are good at betting and you donate some of your winnings to charity?
i would say it has to do with the person's upbringing that involved someone very close to them being very irresponsible. It also could be a close friend who lost the house, got a divorce, and then lost a custody battle. This might sound very simple but i think one might have to experience it in order to better understand.
I think the real hardcore people who are against gambling are the ones who had to grow up with their parent/parents doing it in front of them and then not being able to go to the prom or have a simple birthday party. All it takes is a bad experience a single time or 2 for their nervous system to be affected in my opinion. It might not even resonate till years and years later but i'm a firm believer that a lot of kids know what's going on. And if they can't pinpoint exactly what is going on at that particular time, they will understand what happened later on down the road in their life, when they mature.

The ironic thing is that the gamblers are sometimes viewed in a bad light while the casino owners that take the money rarely are.
The casino owners are poor business men just trying to put food in their children's mouths and a roof over their poor little their heads...
While those degenerate gambles are causing the downfall of America... Scum bucket losers destroying the very fabric of American Family Values... Only the worse of American society would ever consider gambling...
And I do look forward to my yearly pilgrimage to Vegas a month of betting baseball...

There's a certain stigma to it. Although most Americans gamble, in one way or another. I play an office pool during NFL season and usually will take down 3-4 weeks, people always bust balls. I think in some ways people look at me as a degenerate. Its hard to explain.

I have no love or animosity toward casino owners. To me a casino owner is just another business man. Although, I figure a casino owner should have a lot easier time making money than just about any other business.

It's looked at like every other vice. Gamblers lose, it's just a matter of time. It's like chasing the wind. Winning never had the positive effect that was worth the devastation of losing (to me). People generally view it like you're going to lose everything. In addition people like to point their fingers and say "that's the bad guy".
I gambled pretty consistently from about age 15 until about 2 years ago (age 50). I still gamble on occasion but my days of going to the casino and playing hold em or bj and constantly trying to handicap every football game are over. I visit Vegas 1 or 2 times a year and play craps or BJ but it's no longer the point of the trip.
Definitely less stressful trying to predict an unpredictable event. Think about it, this is about putting up your money on predicting the future. The house has the other side, good luck with that...
Don't think that I have anything against it, I understand why I, and others do it, but somehow the need got eviscerated from my daily life and I'm quite happy about that.

It's risky behavior that negatively impacts innocent people around you and will likely end in a disaster.
Why do people think that speeding is bad? Especially if you're good at speeding and donate some of the free time you've gained from speeding to charity.

Perception jaded by jealousy... (To answer the topic question)
It is the simpleton mentality of "if I have to work for a living, everybody should have to..." "if I do not have time to handicap and wager on sports, nobody should be allowed to, period..."
Everybody knows that people who bet on sports lay on the couch all day, drink beer, and watch sports... They never contribute anything to society. (Holier than thou - Experts fact)
As I get older it is more and more apparent just how petty and selfish people can be. The old story about people are like crabs in a bucket is so true. Just as one starts to go over the top of the bucket to freedom the rest pull it back down into the bucket. If I can not have freedom nobody gets freedom.
People do not mind that you are betting on sports, they are just jealous it is not them making the bets... As long as I am the one having fun it is all good, as long as I am the one getting all the attention it is all good...
How many times have you heard someone say... I should have gotten the raise, I should have gotten the promotion, I should have been made full time, I should have won the lottery, I should have gotten an A...
If the truth be told 99.999999% of the public would be willing to admit that as long as no one gets anything bigger, faster, nicer, or more expensive than they do they would be truly happy...
