New York (CNN) -- A Hofstra University student who died during a confrontation between a home invasion suspect and authorities was killed by police gunfire, a Nassau County, New York, police spokeswoman said Saturday.
Police fired eight shots at the intruder, who authorities say was holding a gun to the head of Andrea Rebello, 21, during a home invasion robbery Friday at an off-campus house in Uniondale.
One of the shots hit Rebello in the head, killing her, police spokeswoman Maureen Roach said.
Also killed was the intruder, whom authorities identified as Dalton Smith, 30, of Hempstead.

Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head Friday morning by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder pointed a gun at the officer while holding the 21-year-old Hofstra University student in a headlock, Nassau County homicide squad Lt. John Azzata said.
…
The shooting, which took place just steps from campus, has cast a pall over the university community as it geared up for graduation ceremonies Sunday. A university spokeswoman said students will be handed white ribbons to wear in memory of Rebello.
Rebello, a public relations major, was in the two-story home with her twin sister Jessica, a third woman and a man when Smith, wearing a ski mask, walked into the house through an open front door, Azzata said. Smith demanded valuables and was told they were upstairs, Azzata said.
Smith, apparently unsatisfied with the valuables upstairs, asked if any of the four had a bank account and could withdraw money, Azzata said. The intruder then allowed the unidentified woman to leave and collect money from a cash machine, telling her she had only eight minutes to come back with cash before he killed one of her friends, Azzata said.
The woman left for the bank and called police, according to Azzata.

Hindsight is 20/20 being a police officer is a tough job. An unfortunate incident no doubt but I find it hard to blame the police officer. If he didn't intervene and the robber killed the woman people would be up in arms saying he should've done more.

seems like common sense not to storm a guy with hostages. call in the swat team and get a negotiator there and plan a tactical assault on the perp. tear gas mb?

What the fu** are you talking about?
So the solution is unload your clip on the guy and have one of the bullets hit the hostage in the head and blow her brains out???
Good thing people aren't up in arms the kidnapper didn't kill her. The cop did. Kay serah serah right?

My point was the police officer was in a lose lose situation pretty much. Leave it to Scalabrine to sensationalize a media report or a post from a member from his mom's basement. Have you figured out the racial make up of the cop/perp/and victim?? I assume white because you've only posted about it once. Keep us updated!

It is a shame this beautiful young woman was accidentally killed, but let's back track to the actual root of the problem and why the cops needed to be there in the first place.

It is legitimate to ask why the officer would enter the residence alone knowing someone with a gun was inside.
I agree. I also agree with Biscuiteater in that my opinion might change depending on which version of the story is actually true. But at the end of the day the cop made a judgement call under very intense circumstances and unfortunately it did not work out. Tough situation for sure.

So it is the cop's fault that this guy decided to rob an innocent woman and take her hostage? You are always looking at how a situation should have been handled, while I am looking for how it should have been prevented from happening in the first place.
That is the difference between you and I.
Uh, here's a news flash. Cops are called in AFTER something can be prevented. It is their job then to act responsibly and remember this PROTECT AND SERVE.
I have no problem with him shooting the guy. I DO HAVE a problem with him unloading his clip.
WHY? Because it was about his life and not the girls. If this cop was never called she had a chance to live.
Maybe she would have been killed, maybe raped. I don't know. But it is the WORST of all outcomes for the hostage to die.
It's the cops fault for unloading EIGHT shots into a guy when a skull of an innocent person is one of the things that could possibly be hit.

Wow I wasn't sure this day would ever come, but Scal is right. It was hard to type that, but wtf is wrong with you people? Seriously take 8 shots and kill them both and you people condone that? Oh it's a tough job . If the p*ssy can't handle the job then go work at fuckin Burger King. This is ridiculous. I'm not sure there is any situation where this would be the right thing to do.

I have a problem with the scumbag that caused this whole thing.
You were not there and don't know what the situation was like. Only one thing is for certain, if the crime was never committed in the first place, no one dies.
No one cares that you had a problem with the guy.
That helps no one in this situation when a cop is unloading his clip in these situations and then some.
Cops are there to protect citizens when a crime occurs. If the cop sprayed the house with an oozy and knew that the public would direct their anger at the criminal because it is about the crime and not the shots fired, they know they'd fail to be held accountable for any of their 'policework' (which you are playing a part in).
And what happened here, according to the reports we know are available, is that this girl was in a headlock and got shot in the head.
For god's sake, it is the single WORST target available when you let off a shot because it is certain death or paralysis. If she is in a headlock, we know she is at his HIP.
What is a shooting range for?
I have shot a gun at a range twice in my life and I am confident I can hit a man with EIGHT SHOTS.
But I sure as hell wouldn't unload my clip on the guy where there is a young woman scared for her life in a headlock.
It is people like you and Iron that give the police a pass in these instances and they continue to ramp up their militant police style. This is not a war. This is a hostage situation and for god's sake EVERY precaution should be taken to protect this girl's life.
This was a DISASTER and in all likelihood, she didn't have to die.

scal - I usually agree with many of your posts but this one I disagree with. Granted we do not know how everything went down. So for the sake of my argument here I will assume that the cop did not have a "renegade mentality" and did clearly value the hostage's life.
He acted upon a scenario that ultimately did not work out for him. It is shitty and is easy for us to comment after the fact. But what about if the cop did not do what he did and the following happened...
1) If the guy was acting in a manner that made the cop believe that he was gonna kill the hostage? And he in fact did kill the hostage?
2) If the guy was acting in a manner that made the cop believe that he was gonna kill the hostage and/or the cops? And he in fact did kill the hostage and / or the cops?
3) Any of the above 2 scenarios was gonna happen but the actions by the cop prevented them?

my point is that it sucks that the innocent girl got killed. But in the heat of the moment I like to give think that the cop made a decision that he though was best.
It happened to fail miserably (although that is easy to say now because we do not know how it would of ended if the cop did not take action). But what would we be saying if the cop did nothing and the bad guy ended up killing the hostage and maybe a few police officers as well?
Tough call

Value the life of the hostages to what degree?
We can say we ALL value hostages lives but not all of us are hired for a job, a job we freely applied for and took, and them let our actions dictate that OUR lives are more important than the hostage, which is ludicrous from the standpoint of the cop.
We don't know what happened in full detail FOR A REASON.
The only people with access to the crime scene are the police and when they can be exonerated for the killing of an innocent, especially by their bullet, you can be sure they will be at that podium giving you each and every detail down to the size of the cobweb in the corner of the room.
Allowing 'plausible deniability' and shielding facts allows you the possibility of the coming up with myriad what-if scenarios that can absolve the cops and ones that are far better than what they could come up with themselves.
All I want to know is why did the whole clip have to get emptied at this scene?? Is eight enough? Eighteen? Eighty (and yes I can link articles where more than 80 shots were fired at a single person where others were in harm's way)?
The way I see it, this girl might still be alive of the cops were never called! And that means this was a DISASTER of a result, a result prompted by a cop who might have had a kill or be killed mentality even with the target having a young woman in a headlock.
