How much do you give at a wedding?

Bride is the daughter of my cousin. We are fairly tight and see these relatives every couple months. It's going to be a big church wedding with the reception at a well known and upscale establishment. She's registered, but we would rather give a cash gift because they are paying a sizable amount for the wedding and reception.

I am at a loss here. Haven't been to a wedding in over five years.

I think $500 is a fairly decent number. Perfect middle ground. That way, you've covered your meal and given them a little extra as a gift. Again, It all depends how close you are.

It's not going to break the bank, but it's certainly nothing to scoff at.

Isn&#x27;t 500 a little low, Considering goose said they are fairly tight and also see each other often, I was thinking more along the lines of 1000 that way you&#x27;ll either look like a big shot or you will be just hitting the number everyone else is giving, 500 is a low number for relatives in my opinion.

Are these real dollars or fictitious internet dollars?  I&#x27;d consider myself middle to middle upper class income as are most of our friends and family.  We usually give 200-300 depending on how close they are.  We got married 3 years ago and only people who gave us more than 300 were parents, grandparents or godparents.

500 dollars seems very appropriate. You said it was a pretty large wedding, so assume that everyone gave them 500 dollars (which will not happen).... $500*100 guests=$50,000. That seems like a garbage load of money to me

OR assume the worst and say $100 a guest*100 guests=$10,000.

I think 500 bucks is more than reasonable. It's like someone said, divorce is more realistic than anything

If it&#x27;s a nice wedding they&#x27;re probably spending $50-$100 per person/plate. My guess is they&#x27;re spending $50 per plate so each person should give at least $150.

I go $200 for good friends (I am single), down to $50 for people I&#x27;m not that close with.   Don&#x27;t care how nice a place is.....$500 is ridiculous

$500 seems like a lot.  If you&#x27;re wealthy, then yeah, otherwise you might seem cheap.  But otherwise, I think $200 or $250 is right.  Or get something for around that amount on the registry.  I would do that if they have a $200-250 items because otherwise something that size might not get filled, and it will seem generous and memorable.

So do people make profit on their on weddings. If couples are giving $500 ($250 per) that could easily be more than cost. So let's say 150 invitees. They're gonna collect $37,500 cash!? Probably more than most weddings would cost.

I&#x27;ve gone to about 10 weddings in my adult life and 9 of them are divorced so the presents were just a waste of money. Usually gave a couple hundred and something off their registry. My sister has been married 3 times now she understands that the only gift she gets from me is a drunk brother at the reception.What I should have done is just post date a check for 5 years for 3 or 4 thousand and if they make it that far you couldn&#x27;t consider it a waste of money. If I would have done that the 1 in 10 that actually made it would have all the money now.

friend = $100close friend/extended family = $200-$250brother = $500Im thinking that $200-250 sounds about right for situation... also dont let the cost of the wedding change your amount...unless your amount is less than what it cost per a person for food or the venue...  It kinda like pulling your own weight...  like our wedding was like $40 a plate, so i got alot of $100 checks that covered the people that attended...  the one that pissed me off was the woman that asked for extra guests and brought her boyfriend and 4 kids and gave us $25...
