Maybe as an educator, somebody who has actually taught classes my view point is skewed.
I am SO, SO, SO against this idea. 6.5 years US Army. Got a 20 gauge shotgun for my 12th birthday. So I am Not Anti-Gun...
Guns do not belong in a classroom. The kids will be distracted and want to "see" the gun. I do not want to even consider the logistics of carrying it around and securing it.
Classrooms are for teaching.
It is hard enough to educate as is without the distraction of a gun.
Not to mention I would NOT want to see the vast majority of professors/teachers I have known in possession of a gun. Everybody would be in dangers.
Just curious if anybody believes this is a good idea and why?

I would like to see anyone who actually thinks this is a good idea. I wouldn't be against school police/principal having a gun with rubber bullets though.

Gun's in the classroom is not a good idea. I can think of disastrous outcomes. However, having a lockbox/case somewhere with only a few people with access is not a bad idea. And the only people with access shall be trained (classroom and range)
Bill's idea is good (rubber bullets, bean bags, etc). But even those can't be in the classroom. I wouldn't want them in the hands of an eight year old.

Seriously, how many teachers have you ever met that would actually use a gun?
It would play out where the teacher holds up the gun shaking not knowing what to do and then the aggressor takes it out of his or her hand and shoots.
If they really want to protect the schools then have two cops in a patrol car in the parking lot during school hours. Problem solved.
Well let's do the math on that one...There are almost 100,000 public schools in the US alone...at an average $25/hr per police officer...and 2 officers for a 6 hour period...that is $300/day/school or $30 MILLION dollars PER day!

Hell yes. But the gun(s) are only accessed by one or two school officials which are located in the main office, not in the classroom. These individuals will attend 3 levels of shooting courses( including tactical) and be a hell of a lot more proficient with a firearm than a cop.

what's your point?
30 million times 180 school days is 5.4 billion. NYC had a 19.6 billion dollar budget for 2013.

Bad idea. Teachers would be too tempted to pistol whip the garbage outta the kids. I'm not kidding.
Kids will not go to class for an entire week or longer, show up, have no idea what is going on, and then try to blame you for their lack of understanding. Some teacher would go postal.

Whole lot of veterans looking for some work that can handle any tactcal situation far beyond what a fat cop can do. I'm sure they would be happy to protect kids for less money.
Seal the schools with some sort of sticker or sign that reads "this school is armed and protected." Whatever, as long as the word spreads.
Cops need to be out writing traffic tickets and harrassing the public. . We trained our young soldiers and we trust their skills and ability.

i had no idea there was such thing as a 20 billion dollar budget for one city's school system. there should be navy seals in every school with that kind of money floating around.

In my county in Florida, a full time deputy is assigned to every school from elementary thru high school. It's certainly not a foolproof system, but it is a deterrent and a safer alternative than schools which don't.

There's a whole country full of ex soldiers, marines feds,T instructors, swat, snipers, you name it. 15 bucks an hour for just one and these men would be plenty adequate with some benefits.
They blend in with the kids, provide comfort to a community and are way beyond level 1 training of what some cop learned in a week at the academy firing his Glock 40.
Nobody wants to see a black an white parked in front of a school near their lil kids. Especially with a cop roaming the hallways with clanking hancuffs, radios, spray, stupid hat, badge, clanking keys etcccc.....hell with that plan. Dungpile.

....You guys that workout in gyms know how many of these soldiers and gun experts are in there. They would be proud to take part in a program that protects not only our children but our country, AND earns the respect of an entire nation of parents an citizens.
No brainer. Ya only need one.

Good idea here...
everyone knows the dont bring a knife to a gun fight saying...
but the reality in a fight is that if you bring a weapon, you had better be ready to have that weapon used against you if you were to lose possession of it during the fight...
by bringing in a non-lethal weapon you actually decrease the risk of someone dying vs. bringing in assault rifles as recommended by the anti-gun-opponents...
it is really sad how anti-gun people and anti-gun-opponent did nothing to offer real solutions like you have... and thats why probably no on in their right mind took these idiots seriously...
