Watching Piers Morgan about the alleged rape in Stupidville, Ohio (Steubenville). These teens treated this intoxicated girl like a piece of meat. She's passed out, they're urinating on her... and what's everyone else doing? Recording it with their phones, texting pics to each other, tweeting jokes about it.
There's just an aweful lot of ugly in this world. Is technology partly to blame? I know ugly things have always happened but, is it worse now?
I think it is but that's just my opinion. I stopped watching the news in December after the Connecticut shooting. Now I have to stop watching Piers. Wish I had that emoticon where he's bangin' his head against the brick wall!

Is technology to blame? No, technology is just a tool but people decide what to do with it. Are things worst now? No. There has always been violence among humans due to lack of respect and compassion. For examples, bloody entertainments at Roman coliseum and extermination of person at German concentration camps.

Please refrain from generalized statements about humanity when impulsive amoral pigs engage in a sadistic act that the world finds out about. It doesn't foster any intelligent debate.

The Dodge/Deflection... Anything to deflect the conversation from my questions...
Really??? I made a "generalized statement about humanity"...
The ONLY statement I made was "NO... I EXPECT the normal dodge, duck and hide from this post..."
WHICH YOU PROVIDED...
But again I ask...
Now what would make people do stupid things that are totally out of character???
What would remove inhibitions from people and cause them to act like animals???
What can cause irrational behavior in people who otherwise would behave in a manner considered civil???
Do I expect an answer? NO... I EXPECT the normal dodge, duck and hide from this post...

Randisist... not sure what you're trying to say, but the story I got was that they were all drinking. However I've never once in my life drank alcohol and then did the things that these men allegedly did.
Drugs (alcohol included) obviously impair judgement. However, if you drink and then rape someone, you might have more issues than alcohol abuse.
Hope I didn't "dodge" anything there. Feel free to jump in again and correct me.

Randy... you clearly feel that something "caused them to act like animals". What pray tell do you think caused them to act like animals? Do you think it was alcohol? Cocaine? Heroine? Meth? Weed? I'm really curious actually. Do you feel that a decent human being often becomes an animal with no morals upon consuming any of the above?
I know from experience that alcohol can make a person do and say really stupid things. By that I mean that I've done and said things while under the influence of alcohol that I regret, and they are things I can say with the utmost confidence that I wouldn't have otherwise done or said. That said, I never raped anyone.
I've heard many people say they become aggressive/angry when they drink. So, based on that and other research that I've done, I do feel it's safe to say that alcohol can actually "make" you do things out of character, but I still don't think a person can blame alcohol for committing rape.
These guys could have taken some type of drug too... no doubt. That said, I've never once taken a drug and then proceeded to rape someone.
Sorry if I "dodged" anything.
What is your problem anyways?

No WAY!!! Never in a million years could any of those cause a lose of moral fortitude... Good Lord, parish the thought. Those are all things that are good for you and NOT addictive in any way, shape or form... I know for a FACT there has never been a case of robbery, rape or murder that in any way, shape or form had anything to do with any of those substances.
What is your problem anyways?
No problem... Drugs are Good.

So anyways, Scal brings up a good point. However, wouldn't you agree that times change? I mean, countries and societies change over time due to technology development and other factors. Some of these factors can have a direct or indirect influence on crime. The whole purpose of this thread is to ask the question if we are or have been headed in the wrong direction as a nation. I believe we are.
I heard one argument that technology has desensitized us (to a point) as human beings. Would you agree? I heard another argument that the amount of porn out there (and the ease of access) has done the same.
I'm of the mindset that nothing can possibly cause me to rape someone or do something equally horrible. But some of the youth out there might be more easily influenced. I think it all really boils down to how a person is raised. Unfortunately, I think too many people now are raising kids that have no business doing it. That's just my take.
As a result of technology, we do have kids interacting less with real people in real life situations. Many hours are spent blogging, typing on forums, playing violent video games, facebook, twitter... when I was a kid I was playing outside with other friends whether it was a football game, a game of hoops, hide and seek, etc. I was always interacting with people, and developing friendships. But now, we have less and less of that. Is this a problem? If so, how big a problem is it?
Randy... thanks for the input again. I'm just glad you don't dodge and duck my questions with sarcasm.

I went to high school in the 90s... and there was a kid that got pissed on while passed out drunk... some people took pictures... some people tried to stop it... others stood there and did nothing
but point being stuff like this happened in my day... just didnt have all the social media and smart phones to circulate the pics.... and perhaps this was your point...
also it was a girl... that would have never happened to a girl in my time....

when i was in my teens, there was no internet, no "instant porn". kids these days can see despicable images in seconds on a computer, incidents like these could become much more commonplace

....Looks like Obama should have read the "Obamacare" law before he signed it, OR he was so eager to get "Obamacare" that he didn't care about the "gun owners" clause that was in it!
So, Obama was either stupid for not reading the bill OR knew the clause was necessary to get his "Obamacare" passed, so that his ego could soar!
Wednesday, it was discovered that hidden deep within the massive 2800-page bill called Obamacare, there is a Senate Amendment protecting the right to keep and bear arms.
It seems that in their haste to cram socialized medicine down the throats of the American people, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Barack Obama overlooked Senate amendment 3276, Sec. 2716, part c.
According to that amendment, the government cannot collect "any information relating to the lawful ownership or possession of a firearm or ammunition." This means that the government CANNOT mandate firearm registration. No registration, no confiscation . Poor ol' Joe Biden, he spent the last couple of weeks focusing on making a law requiring registration. Good thing is though, the amendment also states that not even an executive order can override the amendment.
CNN is now referring to it as "a gift to the nation's powerful gun lobby."
