I have no idea where this notion came from that guns have to be either easily accessible to small children or they are useless in an emergency.
If a person is worried about the wrong people having access to their home defense firearm they can get a gun vault and put it on the nightstand by their bed. Kids can’t get it and if they need it for an emergency they can have a fully loaded handgun ready to go in a couple of seconds.

Fearful Americans buy guns to feel safer. if everyone has guns, that doesn't guarantee a safer world. Tragic when guns are misused to kill innocent people.

So creating a society where criminals can carry guns, but law-abiding citizens are not allowed the means to defend themselves from these criminals would guarantee a safer world?

Couldn't imagine not having a gun in my home.
Keep all of them on safety, loaded, chambered and ready to go with a flip of a switch. Live alone of course but when anybody is visiting overnight I make sure that they are well aware of this.
Children arrive and I seperate clip from gun.

I have a 14 and 16 year old boys in my home. I have a defense pistol (380 ACP) that has a loaded mag, but not cocked. I can slide it back and be firing withing 5 seconds - I don't like the idea of having it locked up. One does not know how that might impede your access to your weapon when you are tripping out with adrenaline, and really really need it NOW.
I have educated my boys on guns, and the older one has his own .22 ACP. They are not fearful of firearms, but more educated than most.
Most importantly, I have a very sound understanding of my boys, and I deem them to NOT be a threat of flipping out. They are well behaved, get straight A's in school, and do not suffer from most of the social problems that seem to be prevalent with the kids that carry out these massacres. They have their head screwed on straight to put it in other terms.
Both of my boys know where the gun is, and they have full authority to grab it and use if if they know they need to. They have each fired at least 200 rounds through it at the range.
I feel much safer with my current setup. I would not feel as safe if it was locked up. That is me, not the prescription for everybody. I keep in tucked in the side cushion of my lving room couch. If somebody does something really bad in my house, if I can get to my couch they are dead.

Even if we pass vastly stricter gun laws, we run into a mess of problems. And nothing can track or eliminate or deactivate 300 million guns in circulation in the USA. Pandoras box is wide open.
I'm all for putting 40, 50, 75, and 100 round magazines on a Form 3 by the way. They are ridiculous. (Form 3 is the special classification of weapon only available through ATF approval, stuff like belt fed machine guns, etc.)
The more I hear about this Lanza situation, the more I realize that nothing Congress could have done retroactively would have prevented this.
Nancy Lanza got all her guns legally.
Even if there was a European system in place, Lanza would easily pass all her background checks.
Nancy Lanza was quite wealthy (240,000 per year alimony payments, former stockbroker, ex husband an investment banker, easy 8 figure net worth)
With wealth and no criminal record, Lanza could always get weapons legally. Even if we implemented Chris Rocks 5,000 dollar bullet scheme, she'd have had guns and ammo.
The failure here was for a woman to secure her weapons from her bat**** loony son.

Like ricky I live alone (kids are grown & gone). Up until a couple months ago the only home protection I had was a BB bat. I now have a shotgun next to my bed.........unloaded but the shells are in the nightstand. I don't live in a bad area at all but the nuts breaking into houses these days are targeting decent neighborhoods. It dawned on me that if an armed intruder broke into my house while I was sleeping I would be a sitting duck. I don't give a damm about possessions........but I do value my life.
Do I feel less safe? No............I hope I never have to experience what it's like to ward off an intruder, but at least I know I have a chance now........

I was pointing out the asininity of your statement of “if everyone has guns, that doesn’t guarantee a safer world.”
No one here said anything about how if EVERYONE had a gun that would guarantee a safer world.

The New England Journal of Medicine is filled with expert advice about guns; just like Guns & Ammo has some excellent treatises on heart surgery.

I can go tit for tat with that all day, but the bottom line is if you’re a responsible gun owner then you’re probably better off with a gun and if you’re not a responsible gun owner you’re probably better off without a gun.
