We have tossed around the idea of starting either a landscape type company. One guy already owns a tree company and has some good ins. We have also thought about a vending machine buddy targeting the locally owned discount tire type of stores. Eventually we will have a sports bar but starting smaller at first. Everyone of us were not spoon fed and have worked hard to be where we are so pretty sure something will work. All level headed guys.

Cleaning business, janitorial service...very low start up costs, great profit margins
Interesting idea. How do you go about hiring? I guess advertise on Craigs list or something. In Dallas it seems like I see a lot of those Molly Maid cars around.
I dont even know where to start pricing and how much to pay a worker.

Forget the landscape business. Too much overhead required. The amount of stuff you need to run a comprehensive service is mindboggling (I landscaped in the past)

The main reason I am starting it is to get my cousin and brother crews to run. They need decent jobs. My cousin worked for a major landscaper and knows how to do all the stone work etc.

It has it's ups and downs but when it's working in a area. It blows up and I was charging an average of $40 per job and would do anywhere between 5 to 40 per week depending on how much effort I wanted to put in. Most of the time I would just do what I needed to hit a certain dollar amount and not work but part time a couple hours a day.

How about auctioning off sports memorabilia to benefit the local children’s hospital in the municipality to the sports team?
Where will the sports memorabilia come from? Glad you asked. Ask local sports figures to sign balls, bats, jerseys, hockey sticks, photos, etc...
In Houston, we have the Shiners’ Children’s Hospital. Our sports teams are Aeros, Astros, Dynamo, Rockets, and Texans.
In Las Angeles, they have Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Their teams are Angels, Dodgers, Clippers, Lakers, and Kings.
Make a list of major sports franchises and their hometown. Next, find the information about the local children’s hospital.
Don't forget Race car teams, tennis stars, Olympic heroes, etc.
The big idea is contact sport celebrities and ask them sign a photo, piece of sports equipment. Point out the item is "For the Children". Point out that 90% of profits will go to the Children’s Hospital. How wonderful it would be to "Help the Children".
The 90% that is given to the hospital is what is 90% of what is left after the cost of procuring the memorabilia and auctioning the memorabilia and doing business. And, a "modest" salary for yourself and the other workers.
At first every effort should be made to curb greed and give as much to the children’s hospital as possible.
Make sure every donation carries with it the name of the celebrity that donated the memorabilia. If you can, arrange for the hospital to send a Thank You to the celebrity. The problem is that landscapers dont market correctly. They end up with fragmented routes and canibalize each other.
I call it "grouplawn" (kind of like groupon).
It is epic. It revolutionizes how landscaping could be done, and makes the landscaper who does this potentially immensely wealthy.

Most people who start there own business usually have PLENTY of experience in that business first...ie Journeymen tradesmen or at least even in landscaping someone who has at least 5+ years experience...

Most people who start there own business usually have PLENTY of experience in that business first...ie Journeymen tradesmen or at least even in landscaping someone who has at least 5+ years experience...
Getting involved in a business with friends can be profitable but you guys need to sit down, agree on who's going to do what and at what cost and then sign off. It might even be necessary to create a Buyout Agreement if someone gets lazy after time.
The Vending Business idea is terrible.
The Landscaping idea is ok but the equipment costs can be prohibitive. It's very profitable if you specialize and do only things your good at.
As a fresh idea, I'd say to create a business that will be hot going forward. Businesses like Estate Sale Companies are low start up cost but require strong backs. You either help people who buy furniture put it in their truck or have to get rid of it yourself as part of your contract. You get a percentage of what you sell and the prices are up to you after consulting with the owners (usually the heirs of deceased family). All you need are a few trucks and some advertising after you get licensed.
Becoming an Auction House for general goods might work. Go to Proxybid.com and get a feel for the things people sell. All you need is a brick and mortar, a business license and an Auctioneers license. These places get usually 10-15% from Buyers AND Sellers.
A lot of commerce has moved from storefronts to online. Accordingly, there's a lot more shipping going on today than ever before. The UPS store can be duplicated without being franchised. Just sayin.
