HBO says tv needs HDCP . I called them up and they said use a component cables. I thought HDMI was for HD. Do component cables work for HD ? What the darn is with these guys

Component (the red, green, and blue ends) are used for HD too and HD channels like HBO will work with them, HDMI is not required.

The only thing hdmi will do that component won't is transmit 1080p. But, currently, the only source of a 1080p signal is a Bluray or HD-DVD player.

Component also doesn't carry the audio signal.  Unless you have a separate optical audio cable your sound will be analog and garbage.
