#1 Posted: 1/29/2012 10:21:02 AM This is probably a dumb question, lmao. Quick background as to why I ask. I just got back into gambling after taking a few years off. I used to go through BetUs and didnt really like the hassle of it all and also couldnt afford to gamble. I'm now in a much better financial position and decided to get back in it. Through someone at work, I met a bookie (or middle man for lack of a better term) that Ive been dealing with for the past two months. At first, it was +$50 here, -$80 there...just small stuff back in forth. All my wagers are $100. Then, i got hit for about $500 which he obviously, gladly took. The following week I hit him for about $1400! When I met him at the bar for my money, he had this look like he just ate some bad box (he "allegedly" makes bets also and seems to lose every week!). He pays me and I hang out for a drink and ordered him one too. He was real quiet when he usually is talkative (especially when collecting) and didnt even aknowledge me buying him a drink. I am a tipper (restaurants, bars, barbers, cabbies, bell boys, etc.) and was just wondering. I'm new when it comes to dealing with locals and just want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks for any input fellas!

#5 Posted: 1/29/2012 10:47:12 AM if you're hanging out at a bar as "friends" I don't see any reason why you couldn't buy him a beer or 2, but tipping a bookie is stupid. he isn't doing you any favors other than taking your money from time to time.

#8 Posted: 1/29/2012 12:29:29 PM I can almost guarantee that after your losing week middle man became your bookie.
That $1400 was out of his own pocket that's why he had the bitter look. |

#9 Posted: 1/29/2012 2:19:53 PM sounds about right to me.
the middle man and the book both want you to lose. doesn't matter who it was. i wouldn't tip either one. darn em.
you paid. he paid. i don't see any problems.
i can't stand bookies that like to meet on the -80 and +50 weeks.

Either that or now he is in the RED and has to work for free till some one loses 1400, I've been dealing with locals a long time and you never tip them and they don't expect to be tipped so don't feel bad

Duh, but it becomes complicated when it's one sided action.
If the dude gets 10 bets for 100 on NYG, and 1 bet for 100 on new england, then he has a choice.
He can either match 100 up and make 10%, and send the rest up to the real man, or he can eat it the $900 difference.
It's much easier to just eat it, especially if you've got a history of losing.

#19 Posted: 1/29/2012 11:49:21 PM you should keep everything straight up, if you win you get paid, if you lose you pay. tipping always gets things screwed up. |

#21 Posted: 1/30/2012 3:10:26 AM no you don't tip his behind. also might wanna find out who you met, was it just the runner or was that the book. If that was your book and he was all distraught over 1400 you need to find out if theres another guy up the chain. if there is you need to do business with him as the guy you're currently with cannot handle your action if you plan on winning more.
Also meeting up on -50 +80 weeks, who does that? I hope you're close to them if not thats a complete waste of time. if you've been with him for a little while and working on credit get a number that is comfortable for you and cash out or pay at that number, unless you like meeting up weekly to exchange petty cash.
I'd def look at jumping to the next level though, seems like from what i've read if you go on a nice streak for a few weeks this guy will vanish.
