I think George H W Bush was pretty good candidate and was a decent President his first term. contrary to popular belief, he didn't "lose" to Bill Clinton, he lost because H Ross Perot siphoned off enough conservative votes to defeat him. IF that election had been H W vs Clinton straight up, it would have been "no contest". 

A better question is, who was the last good Democrat candidate?

you can be bitched off at Obama all you want BUT he ran a great campaign in 2008 to defeat John McCain (although I think McCain selecting Palin as VP gave him a huge assist along with Bush boning the economy).

you can also say LBJ in 1964 BUT Goldwater was SO radical it really gave him the race. IF the current crop of Republicans this time around stands, that history will probably repeat itself.

BUT IF you are talking about a Democrate candidate for re-election that people voted for because they thought his first term policies were helping their lives and NOT because the Republican was "un-electabe", I think you have to go all the way back to 1936 and FDR.
