Whats up fellas?  Happy new year!

Im sure everyone has seen bills marked with wheres george before.  Basically people enter these bills on a website to see where they have been and where they turn up next.
Just wondering if any posters here do it or have any information they can share about this practice.
I have actually entered a few bills I have found just to see where they have been and have actually started a few of my own.

Anyway Im just curious if any of you have any experience with it or any info or opinions.

Thanks...Good luck with your NFL playoff wagers.

I have 2.

When they get in my hands they stop circulating. When I get like 10 I'm planning on auctioning them off on EBAY.

i've entered some that I've found before.  each time they've originated somewhere near me.  and only once has someone entered it again after i spent it.  I've also originated some of my own and no one has ever entered them into the system.

the idea of the dollar tracking is very intriguing to me.  sounds fun and interesting, but it just doesn't pan out because no one enters them and every time the dollar goes to a bank, they take it out of circulation due to the defacement of the bill.

Thanks Gunners.  I am also intrigued by the concept.  One question I have is are you sure that banks take slightly marked bills out of circulation?  I have actually received a wheres george bill from the bank.  Also, it is my understanding that unless the defacement is enough to render the bill unfit to be re-issued then it is not illegal to mark a bill.  So I would not understand why slightly marked bills would be taken out of circulation.

I think the issue is that the original stamped "wheres george" bills were mostly older issue bills.  so when an OLDER issue bill has slight defacement, they take them out.  but if a newer bill had a slight defacement, they'd leave it in.  however, the stamps are no longer available, so people write all over them with pens and that qualifies as defacement.  so no new bills are being put out there that last long and all the old bills are old enough now that they are taken out of circulation.  i could be wrong.

I see what you are saying about the older issue bills.  I know its only illegal to deface a bill if it is extreme enough to render the bill unfit to be used again.  But I was always unsure at what point they take a bill out of circulation.
Another thing is the stamps are still available, you just cant purchase them through the wheres george site anymore.   There are several other outlets online that I have seen that are currently selling them.
Thanks for the input man, appreciate it

I did receive a bill that someone entered in Oregon and I received in a cashier cage in Atlantic City but most of the time you get bills that are within 200 miles of your home. Just a waste of time in my opinion!

@Gunners -- "... but it just doesn't pan out because no one enters them and every time the dollar goes to a bank, they take it out of circulation due to the defacement of the bill...."

No one enters them? Not true. Somewhere around 25,000 to 30,000 bills are entered every day.

"[the bank] take[s] it out of circulation." Also not true. I have received several marked George bills from my bank when withdrawing cash.

And lastly,

"due to the defacement of the bill". Also not true.
Please take a look at:
http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/18C17.txt

"Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

I was out of town but got 2 hits the other day.  Both were near here but I had just entered the  bills about a week earlier so I would expect that...

haha.  verbatim must work for Where's George.

i don't care that 30,000 are entered each day.  i want to know how many of those 30,000 per day are re-entered by someone else?

I haven't seen a where's george bill in about 3 years.  and I deal with cash every day.  and i entered a lot of bills myself and re-entered bills i've found and no one ever re-entered one that i entered, and maybe only one person re-entered one that i found.

anyway, no harm, no foul. my statements might not be 100% correct, but it does 100% reflect my experience with the project.

Just entered one for the first time.  Traveled 258 Miles in 6 years I was only the second one to enter its location.  I am traveling this weekend and will be sure to use this bill at my destination.
