My pet peeve with the Steve Bartman incident

I don't like the fact that that guy walked over to him and dumped a beer on his head.  Other people started throwing stuff at him as well, and for his safety security took him away.  I would not have done anything like that.  Too me these people were cowards to do such a thing.  I am sure that they would have done the same thing Steve did - first instinct is to grab the foul ball and no one is watching how close the ballplayer is to you.  Three people went for the ball, and the ball only touched Steve's hand.

What do you think.  I would say half the people on here would dump beer on him as well.  They would join the crowd.  

It is interesting that Steve has not had any contact whatsoever with the media.  I am sure he received so much hate mail and other backlash that he can't forgive people or that he even wants to think about it again.

Ya I agree. I also didn't like when some guy shouted out an 12ga in his mouth. Man, I know your a Cubs fan and they just blew it but chill out..

The classless hatred that cub fans displayed towards Bartman has me wishing those scumbags never get the enjoyment of seeing the cubs in the world series. Just utterly digusting and pathetic, How much of a loser, low self-esteem, POS do you have to be to treat a guy like that. A shame on the media and Fox for making it a bigger deal than it really was. Alex Gonzales would've ended the inning if not for his blunder.

You are a fan and you havent seen your team win shit ever and you reach over for the ball???
I disagree with how he has been treated and all the people throwing shit at him, that was disgraceful.He did mess up the game though

He doesnt touch that ball there are 2 outs 1 guy on and its 3-0. You dont know how the rest of the game plays out but to pretend like he didnt ruin the game is silly

Don't judge us all by those idiots.  I feel the same way as most in this thread.  Never was I more embarrassed to be a cubs fan, or more ashamed of the way that dude was treated.  It should be called the Alez Gonzalez game, not the bartman game

looked like gonzalez coulda had a double play when it was top of the 8th with 1 out but he made an error. If he makes that play cubs fans wouldn't be talking about bartman. Cubs used that as an excuse which you cant.

bartman embodies what it is to be a true cubs fan. those other drunk a-holes are not real fans. the cubs GAVE that series away and we deserved to lose and it had almost nothing to do with bartman.

   I am a die hard Cubs fan, didn't go to school or work for a week after they lost and took it really hard. However, I never blamed Steve Bartman for anything. The Cubs had multiple chances to win that series and it just didn't happen.
  Of course Alou would have caught the ball, but it took the Cubs about an hour to get the next out anyway. Bartman didn't botch the ground ball or give up a game seven lead..the players did. The way people treated Bartman was disgusting, but not surprising. There is a lot of liquid courage at a Cubs game. I love to party myself, but what those people did to Bartman was and is unacceptable.

   And in defense of real Cubs fans, because of cost and such, you will find very few real Cubs fan at playoff games. Most of the crowd becomes rich people and businessman because they can afford the tickets while a lot of regular fans cannot..

100% correct. Right after Bartman-Gonzalez made an error at shortstop dropping the most routine double play ground ball. If he makes that easy play-the inning would have ended & Bartman would have been long forgotten. Dusty Baker not relieving Mark Pryor soon enough that inning was another reason the Cubs lost that game. One other thing-there were 4 or 5 other people sitting next to Bartman all of which had their hands in the air at the same time as Bartman. The ball could have just as easily bounced off someone elses hand other than Bartmans. The Cubs losing that series was not Bartmans fault-they simply didn't get it done.

They lost because a guy  making 5 million a yr booted an easy ground ball , not because of Bartman. The fuuny thing is , it diddnt bother Gonz. at all and the fan is the one who felt bad.The  only thing I blame this guy for is turning down the 200,000 for an interview.

What shocks me is that none of the fans came to his aid or supported him.  If someone did that at a game I was at, I would have at least helped the best I could.  If a few people would have stood up for him, it might have helped stem the tide of the mob mentality.
