i've been gambling for over 30 years and have lost alot of money my advice to you would be try and stop completely because in the end it will only hurt the people you love the most your family its not easy especially the time we put in making our bets watching the games and on and on.......there is alot of great advice on here but in the end it comes down to you if you stop 100 % you will have a much happier and healthier life filled with joy ..................good luck

I appreciate all the kind words from everyone and apologize if I didn't get to respond to you specifically yet, please know that I read and digested everything that was said.

I got a check back from the Palms recently after I mailed in a few winners from my most recent Vegas trip with my wife in the middle of July. I cashed the check but haven't done anything with the money -- my plan is to slowly build up a bankroll for whenever it is I get back into the game. And if I don't get back into the game at the end of this year time period, then I can surprise the hell out of my wife in a year's time with a kick-behind present or something.

I had some significant temptation this weekend to take the money and wire it to bookmaker for some futures bets but I fought off the temptation to do that. Looked up GA meetings and found out they are only held on a Friday night at a local church in my area... not exactly excited about going but probably will start making my way over there so I can tell my wife that I am making an effort along what she wanted me to do.

i hope that you are being as candid with your wife as you are with this forum. sharing this with her will help you both better understand where you are and when she can support and assist you. i think she would be destroyed if you told all of us this stuff and yet didnt share any of this with her...

You may be able to sell that garbage to ms. kap, but please....save yourself and either get back to gambling and keeping my fellow bookie's pockets lined or try to take the cure, who do you're think your kidding, maybe yourself for a short while, but not me, it's football and you you'll either turn into a liar with the ms. or you'll sneak a few past. Just like the saying about a thief..."once a thief always a thief"..Good luck champ, I just wish all the guys I had were man enough to settle up before trying to take the "cure"

What's the cure?

So far so good BTW, gonna try to update this monthly. Football season won't be hard for me... what is really gonna be the test for me is if we get an NBA season. Gonna be a real test of willpower and discipline not to give in when that happens.

Haven't found myself getting more angry at life than usual, if anything I'm much more relaxed. Not glued to the phone for score updates, don't care if the old lady wants to switch the channel on Saturdays or Sundays, can actually go out and do stuff during those weekend days without feeling like a junkie who needs a hit.

Haven't gone to a meeting yet because they are only held at one date/time a week that is pretty inconvenient to me. Still not sure if I want to or not.

Record for football this year placing fake units:

NFL: 10-10-1, +2.17 units
NCAAF: 13-12-1, -0.35 units

Still in the positive altogether

you'd hate the friggin meetings. they're like aa but way worse. you'd only appreciate them if you were super desperate.

like you, wife is number 1 for me.  she has been concerned at times and so i take periodic breaks if it is getting out of hand.  counseling should be very good for you.  i think counseling should be required for all those that can afford it.  honesty, transparency, and compromise makes marriage successful and (counter-intuitively) joyful.  anything that becomes ultimate (anything that dominates our thoughts and actions) immediately makes us a slave to it and we are in bondage.  fasting from the things that tempt us to be enslaved by them is a very healthy practice imo.
i hope this continues to work well for you guys.

Hey Kap,

I use to read your college basketball posts last year.  You're the UCLA or Pac 10 guy yeah?  Or was that Atlantic 10?  I can't remember, either way, it doesn't matter.  I understand your position regarding gambling.  Trust me, we're all gamblers here on Covers.

May I ask how often you gambled?  Pretty much daily, yeah?  And you spend a lot of time researching, capping games, yes?  I know you did for college bball and I assume you did for other sports ... And I remember your college bballs write ups were great.  I don't think I ever responded to any of them, wish i had.

So my question is this ... do you invest?  Trade stocks?  I know your wife would kick your @ss if you placed a bet, but would she kick your @ss if you placed a different kinda bet?  Like buying or shorting a stock?  I've been gambling for awhile ... like maybe 7/8 years on and off, but I've been trading stocks for 11 years now.  That "rush" is the same Kap.  I mean, the results are slower but its still the same.  You have to be a risk taker when you trade stocks.  And there is no shortage of that here on Covers!!! LOL ... So all you need is a sound system.  I recommend you pick up one book by William O'Neil ... I believe its called How to Make Money Buying and Selling Stocks (or something really really close to that).  He's the founder of Investors Business Daily.  You'll love this trading or investment philosophy ... its all about risk management, yet its quite aggressive ... his way of investing matches most personalities on this site ... I'm surprised nobody ever talks about it.  I say find out for yourself.  If you have any questions regarding this type investing or Bill O'Neil himself, send me a private message ... I'll do my very best in answering your questions.  Good luck bro!!!

Trading stocks is very addicting tho homie ... once you're hooked, thatz it.  I'm not saying buying or shorting stocks is any better "morally" than gambling ... in society's eyes it seems so but in mine ... its all the same.  At least with stocks, you can cut your losses lightning quick, in gambling ... you really can't.  Once your bet is placed ... you're pretty much screwed.  Lemme know.

I don't think you'd like going to a meeting.  All it would be is a bunch of people telling stories how they ruined their family....lost their job......went into financial ruin, etc.  Pity party.  You've already (at least so far) demonstrated that you can control your own situation.

I'm guessing you would walk away thinking you were the highest functioning individual in the room and kind of resenting the whole deal.

I don't see how they would teach you anything you don't already know.

Congrats on a good start, by the way.

Glad to see things are going well Kapono. That honesty you have with your wife is a key component to a succesful marriage. It seems like you are making a great effort in keeping that bond strong.

Goodluck and congratulations on little Kapono.
