When you think you are having a bad day, consider this...a friend of mine's wife just killed herself

Postpartum Depression is no fucking joke.  These women get whipsawwed through ridiculous hormonal changes and if they can't deal with it, they actually wish harm upon the baby sometimes.  Seems insensitive, but the father should be grateful that the kid made it through this unharmed.  severe cases like this never end well and it usually results in the mom making a stupid decision with the kid, not with herself. 

If you don't notice the signs, it is hard too, because usually the moms keep their depression to themselves.  The dad could be at work all day and not notice anything wrong with the mom.  little does he know that she is crying when he's not around, ignoring the baby, and the next thing he knows he comes home and the mom tossed the baby in the bathtub face down without even thinking about it because her head is so fucked up.

When it gets severe, it can be postpartum psychosis.  Symptoms of this disorder include hallucination, delusional thinking, depersonalization.  It is fucked up!  it's crazy what the human body can do, without any drug abuse either.  

Things to help people avoid this -

Dads: be involved!!!!!  as much as possible.  help with the baby, and even more so, help around the house.  also be involved during pregnancy.  help her as much as possible with anything she may need.

Get her out of the house - urge her to see her friends, let people visit.  get her to take walks with friends.  join a mommy & me club.  take walks with other moms.

Make sure she eats well and continues to take vitamins.

Every mom will suffer from the "Baby Blues."  There are just too many hormonal changes for the mom not to have a breakdown or a crying session in the weeks after birth.  dads have to be on top of this.  don't let it progress into prolonged depression.  and I wouldn't wish the rare severe cases of postpartum pyschosis on my worst enemy because it rarely ends well.  Without medical attention, it doesn't go away either.  At the onset of any type of depressive behavior, seek help.  better safe than sorry. 

5_for_fighting, sorry for the loss.  that is just really fucked up and terrible.  but if anything can come from it, maybe some of the degenerates on this site will read this, become knowledgable, and will help prevent it happening within their own families.
