Just would like to know what others on Covers think about people who use the word "colored".
A They are stuck in the 1950's?
B Just their way of showing they are racist using a term that is no longer excepted, but try and do it in a way that won't make them look bad.
C None of the above ( please explain and give your thoughts as to why. )
For me, the last person I heard say that word was my 92 year old grandmother. Also, the word "colored" is one in the same with "negro".... when used today... they show your true colors as far as being racist or not. When I hear a person use either one of those words... racist is the first think that comes to mind.

It is racist because you dont call Chinese people "yellow" and you dont call Latin people "brown" so why refer to black people as "coloured" because when we white people start blushing we turn red so does Juan or Carlos have the right to call me "red" ?

I recall my best friend's grandmother when we were kids just out playing at his house. She'd say things like, "Michael aren't you going to share them cookies with all your little cracker friends?" To things like, " Come here you litle n***** boy!" etc.
Outsiders may get the wrong picture, but she is an incredibly kind and generous person at heart. That is just how she talks, having grown up in Georgia in the 1940's.

Haven't heard colored since my Grand Pappie used to say it. He wasn't even a racist played in a Jazz band w/ all black guys that were his buddies.Think it was just a term they used back in the day or maybe deep down inside he hated them all I don't know I doubt it don't think it's a racist word.
How do you describe someone that isn't white? Or is calling someone white racist too? I know when ever I'm in South America they call me blanco and gringo and it doesn't bother me should I be outraged? This is all getting confusing. I remember I used to say African American and got told motha fucka I ain't from Africa a couple times. So who knows what the proper etiquette is. If anyone knows please tell me what I call each ethnicity or can I use that word?

I just always thought "Colored" was the polite way to describe someone's race. that is why I say it. I just never liked to call African Americans Black. Black to me just sounds like a harsh word.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
The term is still in use.
It was grandfathered in.
Here are the alternatives... NAAAAP, African American - They are Americans.... they don't want this term NAABP, Black people - Not accepted by older black or white people as much IMO, and it is not a comfortable word on the national level, it can't be the politically correct term because it can be used in racist ways (I guess any of them can, but its just not understood as PC across the board)
So they stick with colored, because it is clearly being used in a respectful way... because it's old it is understood that way - if I were to call a black kid my age colored he would look at me like I was fucking crazy, rightfully so. If someone said 'this colored guy named _______ said ___________' i would .

You know, 2 years ago I remember hearing that Lindsey Lohan made a comment about Barrack Obama being out first colored president and people were getting ready to attack her and th NAACP stepped in and said it wasn't a big deal at all and she was right.
So how is it offensive again?

The NAACP isn't going to go against the word colored, obviously.... plus the people atop the NAACP are dated people themselves, but we are just saying on the street, person to person, calling someone colored sounds very strange.
Same goes for the negro fund - it is a dated term, and a dated organization, but they can't change it now. The people that make decisions in the UNCF probably always use the word negro, simply because they are a part of the negro college fund - it doesn't make it the correct term for most daily conversation today, it's just grandfathered in.
If you say colored or negro, I don't think you will be deemed racist (unless you used it in a condescending way, which goes for any word) but it will definitely sound dated and you will sound out of touch with the time.
