How do people afford weddings nowadays??

Been to a few weddings within the last couple of years and they ranged from 40k-60k. I just dont get how people can afford this?
My boss is about to get married and they were trying to go cheap as it was, just get married on their own and have a "reception" at a local italian club, and even that was like 8-9 grand. Its just so much these days, and with the economy and lack of job security, I dont get how a fairly young couple can pay this.
 
The wedding im going to for my best friend in a week+ is running him about 60k. its not as if they are poor, or well off I guess..she has a nice job, but Im sure not making more than 60k, and he just started a hedgefund, but cmon he aint makin much money other than the 50-100k he made helping people he knew invest and kickbacks he got.
 
i dont get it...how can people pay this shit??

Well, I'm the Best Man of a wedding that goes next Saturday, the two of them are paying $175/person and have been saving two years for it, takes good money management is all

as nice as weddings are revenge, they are so overrated in terms of price.
 
its uncanny between the DJ, the photographer, the place the food etc towards cost.
 
its unreal how you can spend 60k in a day essentially

true but I guess it depends on the people getting married.  When I was going to get married, we found a small hall that was "good enough", the cheapest person to marry us & so on because we felt the day was more about us becoming married than it was about making people think we were rich

Some people seem to think they need to throw a ton of dough around in an effort to "show off" so to speak - to each their own

and think about it...afterwards you are investing in the biggest purchase of your life (if you can afford it) in a home.
 
my boss who is getting married in oct cannot have a wedding really cause they are saving for a place to live.

they get a lot of it back from wedding gifts in the form of cold, hard

And that doesn't even include the legal fees for divorce in 2-3 years.
Silly silly the 'white wedding'. Go to Vegas, get married and spend the money on a nice honeymoon.

It makes sense to us as men, but girls grow up wanting to have their own big day with a huge wedding and invite everyone they know... unless you have a smart down to earth girl you have to destroy your financial future for at least a few years by buying all the food and drinks your hundreds of guests want for a night, not mention the venue, cake, and a ridiculous amount of decorations, the list goes on... ouch

Go to the courthouse and get married, then take all of the money you were spending on the wedding and fly to a Caribbean island for the honeymoon.  If your woman isn't into that, tell her you will do another wedding ceremony on the beach.

Get married on a cruise ship........cheaper then what most would expect.......I know someones that cost 4k then you set sail

I have been to a fancy wedding at Ritzy WASH DC hotel, another was in a Bingo Hall in WEST VA, another was in the synagogue reception room , for 3 different  friends over the past 3 years.
 
It's about affordability and if the parents are paying .
No one is poor .
 
Sometimes, it's about the bride's parents 'showing off' if they can afford it .
A buddy is getting married this summer , just a family thing in New Hampshire -he knocked up the gal and they have a kid already , plus he's not into spending on himself .
 
The other is in VEgas in June at a Bahai Temple ..

my friends parents are front a little, but nothing drastic...maybe a 1/3 at best to my guess
 
I know they get a lot back, but still...it is crazy

I am getting married on the 30th of this Month, we are both lucky enough to have parents that will take care of everything, we would not be able to do it on our own, it is ridiculously expensive, destination weddings seem to be the wave of the future

Same here... my wife's dad actually had to pay for two weddings within less than a year.

Nope don't think so.... he didn't pay for everything though... my side payed for the traditional groomsmen stuff like alcohol, honeymoon, etc.

Nice, our parent just split the reception hall and the band down the middle, me and my fiancee paid for the flowers, limo and our honeymoon

Got Married in November. Wedding for everything was around 35k.
 
They are getting way to crazy. I wanted something simple but the Wife wanted her fantasy wedding and her parents gave it to her.
 
They paid for 30 of it and my parents pitched in 5k.
 
My wifes parents were very smart with there money. They started saving for her wedding when she was 3 years old. They didn't have 30k but they had a lot of money to put down the deposits and had over a year to come up with the rest. They paid for it in Cash. When I saw that I was shocked.
 
They are middle class so there not rich. Both parents are hard working. I guess we got lucky

Got married in August....DJ $3000, photos $3000, video $3000, limo $1000. That's with NO guests.
