anybody can make a batting lineup and pitching rotation..i dont see what qualifies them for getting paid millions of dollars a year...
the players are the ones who decide the outcome of every game not the coaches...
also in basketball...dont fuckin get it....yea larry brown "coached" the pistons great, but as soon as he went to the knicks look what happened...and when flip saunders stepped in to "coach" detroit he did just as good as larry brown...its all about the players....detroit was a great team and therefore would play well with any head coach...knicks on the other hand just suck as a team and would play bad with any coach....
just dont understand coaching in basketball and baseball....
these guys are proffesional athletes and they know how to play the game...i wish a team like the cavs didnt have a head coach so they could show everyone that there not a good team becuase of fucking mike brown..that idiot did not deserve coach of the year...wtf did he do...lebron fuckin runs that team..and idc what anyone says...id love to see mike brown "coach" that team if they didnt have lebron, and them tell me if hes "coach of the year" material
coaches are a joke

As far as basketball goes, the coaches control the players egos and make them play as a unit and conform to the system. If you think Flip Saunders accomplished that to the ability of Larry Brown when it came to the Pistons, then I guess you miss the whole point of what they do. I agree some of it is overrated, but selling these guys to play for a system instead of just for themselves and their next contract is quite the challenge. And yes, you do need some quality players to win, regardless how good the coach is.

still coaches are very overrated and overpaid...im sure there a millions of people out there with great basketball iq's who would be considered great coaches and would get the team to try and play together for a shit load less $$

I believe in baseball a manager is needed. Who would decide when to hit and run, or who to bring in the 7th inning to pitch against the go ahead run. There's so many statistics managers use in mlb to make decsions...players I supposed could try to make those decisions but could you imagine the outcome there, they would be arguing like crazy. Managers pull pitchers when they believe they've had enough whether or not the pitchers agrees with the decision, if it were up to the players the pitcher may believe he has more gas in the tank and give the game away whereas the magager sees he's done and has absolute control over that decision. I certainly understand your agrument and have thought the same thing in the past. I mean NBA in my opinion coaches have very little to do with how things are ran other than the style of play...up tempo or half court...etc..hockey I don't know enough about to make a comment on the coaches, and football a coach is needed for the same reasons as mlb, to pull players in the right play and put new ones in...etc...

Creating a lineup is not the easiest thing in the world. You have to make sure that certain guys get protection so pitchers cannot purposely pitch around those guys. Then you just dont bat your best to worst hitters. Each manager has their own preference to how they want their lineup set but for the most part a lineup for teams, given different managers, would be similar.
Mangers on baseball teams usually put on the hit and run, call for steals, manage defensive positioning of players, tell a hitter to take a pitch, maybe call for an intentional walk. A manager sets up matchups with pitchers and hitters... baseball is almost like a chess game. Mid-late game pitching changes, pinch hitters, pinch runners, defensive replacements, saving a better BP arm for later in a game instead of wasting him early in the game. And most importantly the manager keeps the players mentally prepared. Baseball might be the the most mental game and if a manager cannot keep his players focused and in tune with baseball then the team has no chance of winning.
Not to mention all the other coaches like hitting coaches, pitching coaches, fielding instructors, catching instructors, etc... All these positions have legitimate reasons for being a part of the team.

Athletes especially basketball players are notorious for being disobedient and undisciplined, so that's when a good coach plays an important role in trying to diffuse the fire. Most of the time, it's not the coach's fault, but merely it's because who they have to deal with.

Apparently you never played sports jr....Managers manage the game, lets see any team of any age play without a coach and see what happens...Is the 3rd baseman going to call time and yank the pitcher..Maybe the pitcher doesn't think he is ready to come out..That would be good for TV, a nice teamate fight on the mound..Or maybe when an Allen Iverson never passes the ball and goes 0-12 he can get into a fight in the crowd or with a teamate who wants to shoot too...Managers/coaches have shown in the past they can singly handidly win games, even with the lesser talent than their opponents because of a good game plan..Get back to reality jr

In addition to all his other coaching duties, baseball managers are entitled to bonus money if they manage to stay awake in every game during the year. Not my favorite game. Waiting on King Football.
