Duke started its "spring drills" on February 3 this year.  Old Dominion doesn't start until April 1.  There's little obvious geographic rhyme or reasoning to when teams get started.  It would make sense for teams in warmer climates to start sooner, but that doesn't explain Illinois starting February 14 and Arizona State on March 13.  Crazy!

Alabama will start spring practice March 21.  Not sure with Georgia.

Speaking of Bama an offseason workouts.  Everyone knows dual-threat quarterback Jalen Hurts is fast and talented; he proved that in 2016 by winning the SEC Offensive Player of the Year award.  as a freshman, Hurts has really stood out in the spring workouts by running a 4.48 40-yard dash.  He also put up 315 pounds on the power clean, squatted 455 pounds and bench-pressed 355 pounds.  Hurts is proving even as a young player how to be a leader in the weight room

During Miami's second spring practice under Mark Richt, all eyes will be on the quarterback position.  Three year starter Brad Kaaya is off to the NFL, but the Hurricanes have a loaded room of potential options to take his place.  Mark Rosier, Jack Allison, Evan Shirreffs, Cabe Welton and N'Kosi Perry will all compete for the starters job.  Rosier is the only contender who has started a game (2015, vs. Duke), and Allison has a big arm that could keep him in the competition, but Canes fans are looking to see 4-Star recruit N'Kosi Perry who won't be on campus until this summer.  Key battle for a very talented team.

LSU hit the practice fields for day 3 of spring practice, and much of the focus was on new offensive coordinator Matt Canada and the up-tempo, high volume presence he's brought to the Tigers.  LSU's new era of offense begins with lots of changes, motions and a whole lot of studying by the players.  Much excitement down in Baton Rouge these days.

Alabama will open spring practice Tuesday for the first of a scheduled 15 practices.  This will include a closed scrimmage for boosters on April 8th, and a scrimmage open to the media April 14th.  The spring game scheduled for April 22nd will wrap up spring drills.

Georgia is in a tight predicament at quarterback this spring with only two scholarship players.  Backup Brice Ramsey has announced he will transfer leaving only sophomore Jacob Eason (last year's starter) and incoming freshman Jake Fromm.

Not a good situation (injury) for a team hoping to win the SEC East Division.

Michigan is beginning year three under Jim Harbaugh.  Spring practice will begin Friday, March 24th for the Wolverines.  There's some mystery entering this season with high expectations after two 10-win seasons and a roster that lost 18 starters.  With few returning veterans, this spring will be as competitive as Michigan has seen in years.

South Carolina backup quarterback Brandon McIllwain will transfer to another school.  As a freshman last year, he passed for 600 yards and two scores and rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns.  He started early in the season but was replaced by freshman Jake Bently the rest of the season.  McIllwain is also a MLB prospect.

Yeah Avavida, the kid is supposed to be a player.  Too bad he couldn't enroll early and go through spring practice.

Wisconsin will conduct the first of 15 practices this week.  The last is set for April 21, which is the Badgers annual Cardinal and White spring game, scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at Camp Randall Stadium.  After starting nine games during 2016, sophomore Alex (6-4, 220) enters spring practice as Wisconsin's starting quarterback. He passed for 1,262 yards, 9 touchdowns with 7 interceptions as a freshman last year.

Miami hit the practice fields Tuesday for the first of 15 practices.  Now in his second year at the helm, head coach Mark Richt said the difference was evident in the practice habits developed by players now in their second year in his system.  "Like I told the team after practice, you can tell who the veterans are and you can tell who knows how to practice and knowing what to do."  Richt said the focus of spring drills would be improving as a team more so than focusing on individual position battles.

Alabama's 5-Star linebacker and early enrollee Dylan Moses is turning some heads this spring.  At 6-3, 235 pounds, the young prospect is cut out of stone and has elite speed for someone at 235 pounds.  He has run a 4.46 40 this spring and has shown controlled aggressiveness that has caught the eye of Alabama coaches.  The Crimson Tide lost some great players at linebacker but the position is loaded with young talent waiting there turn.  Many believe Moses will be something special during his career at Capstone and will be a contributor from the first game on.

Auburn had its first scrimmage Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium.  Statistics were not provided and the scrimmage was closed to the public.  It was reported that deep passes were emphasized to show a different element to this year's Auburn offense.  Last season, the Tigers were tied for 91st with just 33 passes completed over 20 yards and had just 10 passing plays going over 40 yards.

We're less than a week away from the opening weekend of all the annual college football spring games.  These games are more about the fans than anything, but it does give the football programs an opportunity to see where their teams are at before heading into training camp this summer.  The great part for fans is most spring games are televised now...at least in the big conferences.

Texas State has some serious issues to work on this spring like finding a productive quarterback and improving one of the nation's worst ground games.  Also, one of the nation's worst defenses is a problem that needs bigtime improvement.  The Bobcats were awful in just about every area during 2016.  Spring drills will be important for finding some things the team can do well heading into the 2017 season.

Ole Miss is going through spring drills knowing they won't be eligible for the postseason in 2017 after imposing a one year ban because of an NCAA investigation.  However, the Rebs still have a lot to play for this season.  Ole Miss won just two SEC games in 2016, so they have a lot of room for improvement.  Spring practice will conclude Saturday, April 8th, with the annual spring game.

I watched South Carolina (TV) wrap up spring practice with its annual Garnet & Black game Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.  QB Jake Bently completed 19 of 31 passes and threw for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Tight end Keil Pollard had a big day catching 10 passes for 107 yards.  North Carolina transfer Tyson Williams also stood out running the ball with some big gains.  What had to be pleasing to the SC coaches was the improved play of the offensive line which was a problem last year.  All in all....a good showing by the Gamecocks.

Spring football is alive and well in the SEC, and spring games are about to get underway in a big way this weekend.  All SEC games are being televised on the SEC Network, with Alabama being the only one on ESPN.  If you like to watch inter squad games, April is the month for you.

Appalachian State has completed spring practice and is already in the midst of conditioning for the 2017 season, which opens September 2 against Georgia.  The Mountaineers have won 27 of their last 32 games.  The Sun Belt Conference schedule falls just right for this bunch to go undefeated in conference play.  Two open dates during the season will help also.

Arizona State has a five-man battle at quarterback.  Incumbent Manny Wilkins, Alabama transfer Blake Barnett, red-shirt sophomores Brady White, Bryce Perkins and true freshman Ryan Kelley.  When new offensive coordinator Billy Napier arrived from Alabama, he announced the QB competition was a "clean slate" with every player having a chance to win the job.  From reports out of spring practice, it looks like the battle is now between Wilkins and Barnett.

I think we get some decent line value on ASU in week 1 vs. NMSU coming off a down year (inexperienced team heading into 2016).  NMSU does not match up well; can't exploit the pass D like many Pac-12 offenses.  ASU will contain Rose.
