UCLA comes into the season with very lofty expectations. Star QB Brett Hundley returns and he is expected to lead UCLA to a possible PAC 12 championship. On offense the Bruins are very efficient but lack explosiveness. Shaq Evans was there most explosive receiver last year avg 11.6 yards a catch and he is now a JET. Both starting RB's Perkins and James were not anything special and while Myles Jack is, his first priority is playing linebacker. In order for this offense to thrive Brett Hundley has to always be on his game which most of the time he is. He did get sacked though 35 times last year but that is mostly because he tries to hard to make something out of nothing instead of just throwing it away. The Oline for UCLA returns very experienced and should be pretty decent in 2014. On defense the Bruins were very good last year but this year they have to replace their star playmakers in Anthony Barr, Cassius Marsh and Keenan Graham and Jordan Zumwalt all in the front 7 not to mention D Coordinator Lou Spanos jetting to the NFL. While there is still definitely a lot of talent with 3 former 5 star guys in the front 7 there are some questions. One answer will be sophomore Myles Jack the kid is just an absolute BEAST!! Kendricks is also very solid.
Now on the other side UVA….UVA has been a major disappointment 2-10 last year despite consecutive great recruiting classes from HC Mike London. The guy is on the hottest coaching seat in America and he will need to produce this year to save his job. He has one of the best coaching staffs in America and it's time for this team to produce. Something that has always lacked the Cavs in recent years has been a solid QB. That should be solved with new QB Greyson Lambert he was a highly touted recruit in 2012 brought in to be the starting man at QB for the Cavs one day and now is the time. The kid possess excellent leadership qualities and HC Mike London and OC Steve Fairchild are super excited about what this kid can do. He has an amazing offseason. At RB UVA has talent in Parks and Mizzel these guys have speed and can break runs at anytime. The question lies at WR who will be the playmaker?? The Oline returns 6 players with starting experience and should be ok. However rIght now there are a few injuries.
On defense UVA is super solid!! If it wasn't for such a bad offense and a few injuries the UVA defense could've been elite last year. At DE UVA has one of the best DE's in the country in Eli Harold, the guy is an absolute monster. At DT David Dean is super quick. The secondary however is where UVA can really shine. Star Demetrius Nicholson is back from injury and safety Anthony Harris is coming off a great 2013 where he picked off 8 passes. This UVA defense has the makings of being special with 10 defensive starters returning.
Game Prediction: UCLA in my opinion is perennially overrated, these guys beat all the bad and mediocre teams but when it comes to playing Stanford and Oregon they get crushed. Don't get me wrong UCLA is pretty good but they are not top 5 quality. Top 25 yes. Today they have to travel cross country for a 12pm kickoff against a team who is dying to right the ship. This is a recipe for a disaster UVA is talented but have yet to put it all together. This will be a lower scoring game then expected with the UVA defense being able to hold the UCLA offense a bit and I do expect the Cavs offense to be much improved and get a few scores on the board. Therefore you have the makings of a much closer game than the line suggests! Soooo I will definitely be on UVA to cover the spread BIG and I will also sprinkle a little on the ML for shits and giggles.
