Tennessee Vols hire Butch Jones as new coach

From Cincy. He got a 6 year contract.

Interesting hire. I wonder who all turned that job down. 

Bret Bielema said on the radio this morning he spoke with UT which I thought was interesting.

It looks like Charlie Strong and Mike Gundy said no to the Vols.

I can't remember the names, but I know that a number of high profile candidates turned Tennessee down before they settled on Derek Dooley. Despite a very nice campus in an underrated part of the country, something about this place is scaring coaches away.

yomh most of the time with a coaching change before a bowl i'll ususally either bet less on the team or not bet it at all. I liked Duke before Jones went to Tennessee so it won't change for me

As for Coach Jones Tennessee fans he will bring accountability to your program. I watched a lot of Tennessee games and some of those players think their best thing since sliced white bread. They're gonna get a reality check with Coach Jones trust me. You got a good coach. he walks into the east division while Ga,Florida and South Carolina are clearly the best 3 teams.And Vandy is imo very good. Jones will bring toughness,accountability to the Vols.

Are you gonna win an SEC title under him? IDK. But i'll tell you this you got a gem imo

Not a stupid question -- unfortunately, there is no clear answer.  It depends.

Can't remember them all, but Muschamp was one of them as well as the Coach at Airforce (was not crazy about that "option" pun intended!). At that coaching change timing was the issue as Kiffen left, unexpectedly a couple of weeks prior to signing day. (USC had the same problem as they were turned down by a few coaches prior to taking on Kiffen). Because of the short notice the AD was likely not prepared for a search. (I wish TN would had taken the Arkansas approach and use an interim for a year as opposed to rushing a hire)

As for this time, despite the fact that the AD should have been prepared for a search (who did not know Dooley was getting fired after Miss State Game), it does not appear that was the fact...and then TN chases after guys that like Gundy who is never leaving Okie State and Charlie Strong after Louisville already said they would match any offer and willing to make Strong the highest paid coach in the country.

I am not happy with this hire. I think Packers said it best this coach will get us 8/9 wins at best (hoping for better though). But if we could not get the top tier coach homerun then grab Petrino at 2mil and take your chances.

Then again what do I know....armchair QB just bitchin' and complain'!

mr pidaso i think you hit it on the head. For tennessee fans if you want to be sad/mad because your administration botched this go ahead. But don't be sad/mad you got Butch Jones.

pidaso don't be shocked if he gets rid of some guys. Because imo there are a lot of entitled players on that roster as of now

who is this guy? can he cover?

 

I did some research and Butch Jones and Houston Nutt are the only BCS conference coaches to ever lose to Dooley by more than three TDs.   

I fully expect the new coach to clear out some guys...there is typically some attrition after a coaching change. A few guys were likely to leave anyway (Bray, Hunter and Patterson are 1st/2nd rounders according to Kiper...I do not buy into that with Bray...and as talented as Hunter may be he is lacking some toughness...has gator arms in traffic)

I will be anxious to see how the staff shapes up. I would like to keep Graham and Pittman...maybe add T-martin to aid in recruiting, then spend some dollars and grab some quality OC/DC. A lot of folks in TN like Chaney as OC but I am not as impressed...seems to me the offense has all the numbers, but could not get the big first downs or the big scores when they are needed/critical. The tough yards were yard to come by.

Oh well onto the new...hope to hell the Jones can recruit (not impressive at Cincy...but it was Cincy). Anyone though was an improvement over Dooley!

This Scary!!! I can only hope it is because the talent level is higher at UT than UC......had Jones been Coaching UT and Dooley been coaching UC would the result have been the same?

Looking back on Jones CMU days....he was impressive with the W/L and included beating Mich State at MSU. And he was 2-1 against the other coach we were willing to pay 4 mil. (another hire I would not have liked!)

 

 I am not thrilled with the Jones hire but I am ready to fully support his efforts, just like I did with Dooley.   I NEVER supported the Kiffin regime and actually didn't follow the Vols with any enthusiasm during his tenure.

 If you look at the six newest BCS HCs, I don't think that I'd take any of them over Butch Jones (Brett Beliema, Steve Addazio, Mark Stoops, Darrell Hazell, Dave Doeren, Sonny Dykes). Dykes could have been fun but there is no way that they could go back to back to La.Tech for their new HC. 

 With that being said, the fact that they were unable to get an "A Lister" in either of their two most recent hires is a bit unsettling with me.

yeah and LSU fans once said how can they hire Nick Saban? he lost to gerry dinardo when dinardo was at LSU? IMO thats a lazy persons way to analyze the hire. Cincy lost that game because it was at Rocky top. If it was in Cincy you would've lost. Pidoso who did you want?

Jones is a slime ball... UT deserves him

If I had my druthers......and not that I expected theses coaches to leave their respective schools, but I would have taken a hard stab at Peterson first. (I did like the idea of Gruden, but realistically speaking he and his staff would easily cost 10mil min) But know that I know we offered such cheese to Strong, a solid coach in my opinion but a 8/9 win type of coach in the SEC not a SEC Champ type coach...same as I feel about Jones) but back to Peterson, knowing we were willing to offer 4 mil to strong then go the distance and offer 5 mil to person and make him say "no!". He only makes a little over 2mil.

I like patterson a lot as well, but he make near 4mil, butstill offer 5mil and make him say no as well. At least I believe Peterson and Patterson are worth the cheese.

And after they said no...hands down I believe Petrino is the best option. Is he a snake in the grass? An emphatic yes. Can he coach? another emphatic yes. But I still think he is worth the risk. I could be wrong but with the ability to recruit at Tennessee he would have had UT in the SEC Champ game in 3 years.

I really do not have the knowledge to dig much deeper with some of the up and comers like Doren or that cat at SJSU or even some NFL Assistants...look at the job done at Penn State this year considering the mess....very impressive. That is where I can only trust the AD and the university as they should have that knowledge.

Like 29 I supported Dooley and I waited until this year to judge his abilities...the first two years he had some valid excuses, lack of depth first year and key injuries and a brutal schedule his 2nd year, but UT had the talent and depth to win 8/9 games this past year and the play was embarrassing.

Jones has my full support as well, and I am looking forward to how he assembles his staff, because the bottom line is a HC can look a lot better with solid support. It could easily be said that Dave Clawson got Fulmer fired while Sal Sunseri did Dooley in, but in the end it was their choices, and the HC shall go down with the hires, just like I think the AD should go if he makes bad HC decisions.

I will also be excited to see how recruiting shapes up this year. Unfortunately UC does not appear to have any high profile guys that would follow Jones. But at least now the recruits that are out there know who the coach will be the next few years which has not been the case this past season.




And Hells yeah...Cuonzo Martin is a keeper. I am excited what he will bring to the table year in/out. Pearl brought some excitement to the university but I believe Martin is a better coach. We are struggling Offensively right now...just do not have that go to scorer and that will continue to plaque TN unless a healthy Mayman  returns. As much as I like Stokes...he does struggle to create his own shot at times.

Well that is my two cents  on the matter
