Teusday's matchup showcases two of the best teams that the Sun Belt Conference has to offer. Middle Tennesse brings it's 3-1 sqaud to take on the 2-2 Trojans of Troy. Both teams are 1-0 in the conference and look to improve tomorrow.
Both of these teams can move the ball through the air. MT ST is ranked 19th in the country with 274 py pg while Troy is 18th passing for 278 py pg.
With two teams that love to move the ball through the air...it is crucial for defenses to put pressure on the QB and opposing offense.
Troy allows 2 sacks pg and ranks 115th in the nation by giving up 8.25 tackles for loss pg. MT ST allows 2.5 sacks pg and ranks 110th in the nation by giving up 7.75 tackles for loss pg. Both of these teams have below avg offensive lines. I look for both teams to get to the QB in this game. MT ST ties at 24th in the country by forcing 6 INTS on defense while Troy has managed to only force 2 picks this year. I give middle tennessee the edge here because they have proven this far in the season to play the pass well at times. Troy has not... ranking 105 in pass yrds given up pg.
Middle Tennessee State also has the 6th best red zone defense in the nation. They have yet to allow a passing TD in the red zone. On the other side of the ball... Troy has one of the worst red zone defenses in the country allowing teams to score on all 14 trips to the red zone.
Aside from my opinion that MT ST will be able to play the pass better tomorrow night... I look for them to have another significant advantage. Troy averages of 73 ypg in penalties. They have racked up 36 penalties so far on the year for almost 300 yds. MT ST ranks 12th in country for fewest yds penalized at just 39 pg.
I know this is Middle Tenn St's second consecutive road game and I am sure the trip to Troy is not on the list of their favorites. On top of that, Troy is coming off a long week of rest... not playing since the 26th. I feel like Troy has too many issues on defense and with discipline to pull out a big game like this. I look for Middle Tennessee to win the game SU.
