In my previous thread this morning I picked three Play of the Day's and I have saved this game as my fourth and final POD. Pending today's results, I have not last a POD yet. I wanted to start a seperate thread for this game because this is a huge game on National television with a lot of betting interest...and for those of who who struggle to open the college football season with the early games today, you can take this play and recover some of your losses.
Last year Nick Saban and his Crimson Tide opened their remarkable season against Clemson at the same site as the game tonight, the Georgia Dome, and started a huge snowball effect for the rest of the season. Tonight, the Crimson Tide will return to the Georgia Dome as the home team to play host to Virginia Tech. Talk about a great game in the making...this game has smash-mouth football written all over it. With two Top-10 defenses on the field tonight I expect an absolute defensive war with hard hits, and physical play. A lot of talk has been mentioned in regards to the loss of RB Evans for Va Tech, but a lot of people have failed to mention the trio of runners that are waiting behind Evans. I strongly believe that with a number of capable RB's splitting carries tonight is going to help VT stay fresh and continue to be consistent on the ground and help set the tone and run the ball against this strong Bama Def. The next thing that we need to take a good, hard look at is the QB position. First, with VT, they will be starting Junior Tyrod Taylor, who is growing both as a QB, but also as a leader of this football team. He brings electric talent, and a lot more experience than the QB playing opp. him in this game. For Bama, they will be starting a new QB from last year in Greg McElroy. Yes, he his a Junior, but he has no starting experience, which is huge in a game in which is nationally televised, and since he will be playing against a strong, top 10 defense in VT. I give the edge here to the Hokies. Finally, I love Frank Beamer a lot, and sometimes he doesnt get enough credit...this guy just wins and finds way to do it, even though his wins dont get pretty sometimes, he still does the job as good as any other coach. Beamer as a coach has been a great "dog" coach. In his last 34 games, Frank Beamer has only lost two games by more than 5 points. Along with that, VT under Beamer is now 10-3 ats as a dog since 2004, and is 13-4 ats in the role of dog since 2001. Yes, sometimes its not pretty, but Beamer is a winner and I will take the points again tonight. Besides, this game is not going to be pretty, its going to be tough nose football, and that is were "Beamer Ball" is at its best!
