this is a tough argument because not all are exactly rated or talked about enough to be on the list and these are just my opinion, so feel free to give your opinion as well and name your coaches
 
Overrated:
Les Miles (no doubt this guy is at least smart enough to put good quality football minds behind him because he is about as sharp as a marble) there are obviously many worse coaches than Les out there but they don't get the media coverage and hype his team gets every year being in the SEC so Les gets my vote
 
Underrated:
Gary Patterson (all he does is constantly rack up double digit win seasons with a state dominated by A&M, Tech and Longhorns with recruiting)  he never seems to be mentioned for the big jobs and the guy can just coach, he just wins games
.

I dont think any1 on here or in the media thinks Gary Patterson is underrated.  How do you determine if they are underrated?

Bob Stoops ... Will he ever win a BCS Bowl game again ????
This Guy defines the word Overrated rigth now IMO..
While the offense  scored 55  a amazing 55 PPG in a confernce
That Being said  only Texas and Maybe Nebraska Play Decent D in the BIG12
 
Jim Leavitt   I know he built up USF
His in game coaching baffles me at times ..
Throwing the remote too much
I know about the 4 straight Bowl games
But this team Under performs too often
 
Dan Wannstedt  has had only 1 winning Year at Pitt .. The Mustache second guesses and runs counter tend..
Away  from whats working and Chokes/ Fails miserably in some Bad Spots  
 
Charlie Weis ... Some people still believe .. I think .....Bellicheat seends all of his scraps out to Destroy other teams ... Charlie might cost them 2+ this year
 
Bobby Bowden and Staff
of the 6 road Games The Noles should lose 4+ and maybe all of them if the Coaching really stinks
 
Dennis Erickson
Time to Retire Yet ????
The Sun Devils should be a Great Fade starting in Game 3
 
 
The OL' Ball Coach Steve Spurrier  ...SC Might be his Good Bye Tour this season  of the Cocks go 4-8 or worse

118-35 Record atGran Valley St and 2 Div 2 Championships
Never having a losing season there
Won the 2006 MAC Title at CMU
Has won 10 and 11 Games his first 2 years Here at Cincinnati including the Big EAST Champiosnhip LY
 
Tommie West Memphis
Has led the Tigers to 5 Bowl games in the Last 6 Years ..
His O-Lines are always Great
 
Randy Edsall UConn
Great work getting the Huskies to 2 staright Bowl Games
 
Kyle Whittingham Utah
Amizing
 
Gary Patterson TCU
another Coach who gets the Most out of his team
 
Mark Dantonio   Michigan  St..
DC for Ohio St when they won the 2002 National Champ as a huge DOG
HC at Cinncy going to 2 Bowls in 3 years..
Has Coached the Spartans to 2 straight Bowl Bids which is the first Time since Saban did it here in 95-97..
 
Jim Grobe Wake Forest
Just amazing what he has done to Turn Wake Forest into a Tough Foe for anyone in the ACC
Love his style of redshirting almost everyone

I think Vince's Boy will be Coaching in thwe SEC or ACC real Soon.. Maybe 2010 or 2011...

How Long before he is in the BIG12 ??? or SEC ???

Agree with most noted above....a few other coaches that probably deserve a little more credit are the twinkie twins, fridge and mangino....also paul johnson.....
 
laugh it you will, but you have to like what skip holtz has done..the year before he took over ECU was DD dog in all but 2 games, and last year was a bowl win over kentuck away from a 10 win season....pirates will make some noise this year.

I absolutely agree with Les Miles.  I have been calling him the "village idiot" of the SEC ever since he arrived at LSU, and have debated this issue many times with posters on this site.
 
Miles inhereted SICK, SICK talent from Saban, and did everything in his power to screw it up.  That team should have won AT LEAST 2 NCs!!!

Doubleup, your list is outstanding. The only one on your list I might have a bit of an argument with is Bob Stoops, but definitely Wannstedt, Weis, Bowden & Spurrier belong on the over-rated list.
 
Your best under-rated coach is Jim Grobe.  Like you said, this guy is amazing.  The fan base and the facilities are horrible there which seriously hampers his ability to recruit.  He has one terrible recruiting class after another, and what does he do?  Just wins!!!  This guy does it with smoke and mirrors year in and yeat out.  He does more with less than any coach I have ever seen.  I can't believe a major School hasn't snapped this guy up.

You might be right about Shannon Thorpe, but I think it's a little prmature to say he's a horrible coach.

Overrated? Spurrier....the old ballsack never gets more out of his playrs than is expected...........& Chuck Weis..........

I guess since nobody mentioned him, I'll add Bill Snyder as underrated.  Maybe he wasn't mentioned because people figure he's neither under nor overrated...but I'd say underrated.

   this is a good thread b/c it can lead to some angles in handicapping. i love some of the choices made previously. i have thought for a few years now that miles was not the swiftest fish in the sea, and that mike riley was highly underrated. he played for one of the best ever (bear bryant) and they consistently win. here are a couple of other underrated coaches...
 
  tom o'brien - n.c state
  all this guy does is win. i know the record the past 2 years hasnt been great, but amato left raleigh in shambles. ToB isn't flashy but his teams are disciplined and don't beat themselves.
 
  al golden- temple
   this is another instance of the record not reflecting the coaching. temple was practically booted out of the big east for being so awful. temple has turned it around and at least they are competitive now. remember- it took a hail mail type pass for buffalo to beat temple last year. i think some bcs team may take a chance on AG within the next few years.

I put him in my Current Top 12

Spurrier should just be playing Golf

 I agree with about everything in here.  It's funny that Al Groh's name didn't come up.  I guess it's hard to be over-rated when everybody thinks you suck, and it's hard to be under-ratred when you actually do suck.  He has carved out a special niche for himself, indeed.  
 
I'll also second that Al Golden vote.  Talk about "Mission Impossible."  Have any of you ever been to Temple?  Can those of you who have imagine how hard it must be to get someone who could go somewhere else to go there? He's a few bounces, and one horrific play call at Navy, away from having taken the Owls to a bowl last year.  Though I see them picked as low as 5th in the MAC East by a bunch of "experts," I think you'll see them playing OU with the crown on the line in November in Athens.
