BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -Virginia Tech will have a new starting tailback in a season of great expectations after Darren Evans tore a ligament in his left knee during practice.
The school says the redshirt sophomore will miss the season after Tuesday's injury to the ACL.
Team trainer Mike Goforth said Evans had an MRI at Montgomery Regional Hospital and will be re-evaluated later this week to see when reconstructive surgery will be performed. He said he hopes to do it soon to allow Evans to get started on rehabilitation before classes begin.
Evans started just eight games for the Hokies last season but led the team with 1,265 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He set a school record with 253 rushing yards in a Thursday night victory against Maryland, and was the MVP of the Orange Bowl after gaining 153 yards.
Evans became the first Virginia Tech player to score a touchdown in each of his first six games, and was a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for 2008.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -Southern California quarterback Aaron Corp will undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine whether his bruised left knee is a more serious injury.
Corp sat out practice on Tuesday to rest his knee after a lineman rolled into him Monday during a workout.
Corp was chosen by coach Pete Carroll as the Trojans' first-string quarterback coming out of spring ball, but he isn't certain to be the starter in the season-opener against San Jose State. Freshman Matt Barkley and veteran backup Mitch Mustain are expected to contend for the job.
They are vying to replace Mark Sanchez for the Trojans, who have won seven straight Pac-10 titles.

Donavan Tate, an incoming freshman from Cartersville, Ga., has left North Carolina's football training camp to consider an offer to play baseball with the San Diego Padres, the school announced Wednesday. Tate was the No. 3 overall pick in this year's Major League Baseball draft, so his decision isn't exactly a surprise.
Tate arrived in Chapel Hill last Saturday and attended quarterback meetings and three days of practice before leaving Wednesday morning. In addition, offensive lineman Kevin Bryant, a redshirt sophomore from Lauderdale Lake, Fla., has decided not to return to the team. Bryant played sparingly, so I don't think the coaching staff will lose too much sleep over his departure, but the offensive line is a unit that simply needs some bodies and depth right now, so any loss will be felt in that aspect.
At quarterback, UNC still has T.J. Yates, Mike Paulus, Braden Hansen (a redshirt freshman), Bryn Renner (a true freshman), and A.J. Blue, who has practiced at quarterback and running back this summer. Obviously they would've liked Tate to honor his commitment, but it's not like the cupboard is bare at quarterback.

Oklahoma State freshman safety Joe Mitchell has been sent home amid allegations that coaches at his high school might have tampered with his academic transcripts.
Those allegations have left three of Mitchell's football coaches at Morton Ranch High School (Katy, Texas) near Houston, including his head coach, on administrative leave with the school district.
Oklahoma State officials allowed Mitchell to practice Monday, but decided to send him home as his transcripts were scrutinized by the NCAA clearinghouse.
"Joe Mitchell is heading back to Houston," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy told reporters after practice Tuesday. "He's got some personal issues he's got to take care of. We learned more today about it. I'm not sure anybody knows, in detail, where they're at.
"But as for now, he has to work through those issues before he can come back here. Hopefully, it could be within the next few weeks. If not, then we'd certainly like to get him back in January."
Mitchell was a quarterback and a safety at Morton Ranch, producing 63 tackles and four interceptions as a senior. He likely would have been redshirted with the Cowboys if he had remained in their program this season.
The Houston Chronicle reported that an investigation began when Katy administrators were told by Texas' University Interscholastic League that three Morton Ranch coaches might have violated district policies, including student records, possible misuse of funds and eligibility.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -Wisconsin has suspended safeties Aubrey Pleasant and Shane Carter.
Head coach Bret Bielema did not say in his statement on Saturday why the two seniors were being suspended. Both players have been an integral part of the Badgers' defense.
The 6-foot-1 Pleasant has made 80 career tackles over 14 starts and was listed beside safety Jay Valai for a starting slot on the most recent depth chart.
The 6-foot-2 Carter has made 20 starts in his career and is competing with Chris Maragos for the other starting safety position.
Wisconsin plays its first game Sept. 5 against Northern Illinois.

ATLANTA (AP) -Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw will miss at least the start of the season after breaking a collarbone during Saturday's scrimmage.
Head coach Paul Johnson said Shaw is expected to miss six to eight weeks. Johnson said it was too early to speculate on the possibility that Shaw could miss the season as a redshirt after playing as a true freshman in 2008.
Shaw was expected to again play behind starter Josh Nesbitt after seeing substantial playing time, including one start, last season. Shaw was 9-of-14 passing for 230 yards while starting in a 27-0 win over Duke. He also played most of the game in a 38-7 win over Mississippi State.
``It's really unfortunate,'' Johnson said of the injury. ``Jaybo was playing really well and was having a good camp.''
Shaw made a quick adjustment to Johnson's spread option offense after playing in a similar formation at Flowery Branch (Ga.) High School near Atlanta.
He had a touchdown run early in the scrimmage and then was injured when a teammate fell on him after a routine pass completion.
Sophomore Tevin Washington is expected to move up as Nesbitt's top backup. Freshmen David Sims and Jordan Luallen, who has missed a week with an ankle injury, are behind Nesbitt and Washington on the depth chart.

My son, who will be in his 5th year at Iowa going for his Masters, says he heard Jewell Hampton's knee is much worse than anyone is letting on. He said something about it last week, and then later on, an announcement was made that he re-injured it, and may not be ready for the first game Sept 5 against UNI. My son states he heard Hampton may not play this year. I hate to start rumors, but he is usually right on about these "rumors". Anyway, keep it in mind; I believe this would really hurt Iowa. Back up O'meara is just not that talented and slow. Brinson has basically no experience and is a RS Freshmen.

South Florida junior running back Mike Ford
has been suspended for the Bulls' first two games of the season for an
undisclosed violation of team rules, the school announced Monday. No
further details were given.
Ford was the Bulls' top tailback as a freshman, rushing for 645 yards
and 12 touchdowns. Last year, he was limited by injuries and amassed
just 407 yards on 102 carries, with five touchdowns.
It's unlikely that South Florida will need Ford for its first two games
against Wofford and Western Kentucky. But the team could be short on
running backs. Junior Jamar Taylor injured his left knee in a scrimmage on Saturday; the team has yet to say how serious the injury is.
Senior Mo Plancher is the current leader in the Bulls' tailback competition.

Syracuse, NY -- Starting outside linebacker Derek Hines of the Syracuse University football team turned in his locker key this morning and quit the Orange. Hines, a junior college transfer from California, had been penciled in as a starter at the Will or weakside outside linebacker spot by head coach Doug Marrone.

UAB Junior RT Terence Edge (2 year starter) out for the season due to academics. Senior RB Rashaud Slaughter is battling an injury and is currently sidelined. FS Hiram Atwater, FS Elliott McGaskin, and FS Justin Smart are all battling injuries and have been sidelined. No word on wether they will be able to play in week 1. Redshirt freshman Ferson Stafford was listed as #1 on the depth chart after their scrimmage on Saturday.
