#1 Posted: 10/27/2008 10:46:38 PM FYI....This isnt a GOY. Its a road favorite. Not GOY year material. However, I see tremendous value.Take it for what its worth......I consider myself a college football fan 1st and foremost, but WV is a team that I follow for some odd reason.....I live in Missouri and am a Tiger fan (pretty sad until last year).....
WV vs UCONN
I know its a road game, and Uconn plays tough at home, but Pat White and Noel Devine are BY FAR the most talented/fastest QB/RB combo the Huskies have seen this year. I think WV showed that the bye week helped get them healthy, and after a slow 1st h, they torched Auburns "great" & "speedy" SEC defense. I watched the Huskies play Baylor over a month ago, and the mobile QB Griffin gave them trouble, he just didnt have the team around him to pull off the win. Last week vs UConn, Cincy only had 30 yards rushing, lost 3 fumbles, threw 3 ints, and went 0-16 on 3rd/4th downs. Despite all that, UCONN was only up 4 at home going into the 4th q. I dont think that defense can contain the speed of WV, but I think WV defense will be able to contain D Brown. The WV defense hasnt given up more than 24 points in a game all season, allowing only 15 ppg. I know one game doesnt make a season, but it can turn one around or jump start one....I think WV wins out and finds themselves in a BCS game.....Is it really that hard to believe?
Last game notes for WV.....
1. Go back to the 6 core plays( quick slant, option, lead draw, qb draw, reverse/misdirection plays, deep balls to keep defense honest).....Check
2. Widen the line splits( better blocking angles and spread the defense thin)..Check
3. Forget the check downs, get the ball out quick and threaten with the deep ball ( if White completes passes, the running game becomes even easier)...check
4. Get Noel his touches( as many as possible!!!)...check
Offensive Line: This group dominated vs Auburn...widen their splits and looked like it helped them get better angles on their blocks... A+
Wide Recievers: Outside of the gimme TD that Sanders dropped this group also had their best game catching and blocking. Even though Lyons did not get a ball he caused all kinds of problems for Auburn..they had to account for hi last night which clearly hurt their ability to cheat for run help...B
RB: There was a Ricky Kovatch sighting on short yardage!!!....What has Stew been waiting for to get this kid in the game...good greif!! Noel Devine has now officially cast his monniker as the "YouTube Sensation" he is now the West Virginia University Sensation..I have seen Knowshon Moreno play against Auburn ....I have seen the other so called SEC SPEED guys play against this Auburn team..I have seen none of them run away from the Auburn defense...A+
QB: Doing what he does best........ play fast , went back to no check downs on reads and did what he does best...when he is healthy...play big in big games...he adds to the legend...B-...why B- ?..2 picks and a botched handoff
Defense:
DL: Wow... Soooter Berry going down my be huge going down the stretch here. He may not be replacable at this point of the season...HUGE LOSS!!...B
LB: Glover was a freak ...Sydney..welcome to Morgantown...a star is born...Leonard, Ivy and Yes there was a Pat Lazear sighting..huge stop onthe goal line they did let Burns run around a bit , but give Burns credit..that kid is going to be a stud for Auburn...A
Secondary: Would have liked to see the corners press coverage a bit more..but they gave absolutely no looks down field...B
Special Teams: Pat Mac made some big kicks in a big game.....finally... Kick off team looked scared to hit people out there...lets hope we get that fixed..C
Coaching:
Casteel: Outside of the defense giving up ground early..they completely shut Auburn down in the second half...and again 17 points on the score board..for those who think the 3-3-5 stack is a waste of time...you clearly have no concept of football...A
Mullen: I am going to guess Stew took the reigns of this guy... and Mullen also looks to have had a heart to heart chat with his offense ....without question his best day..He called a great game....A
Stew: I have given this guy thumbs down every week until now....Everyweek he has gotten better on the sidelines ..he looked in control last night and totally involved...and he went back to the gunslinger mentallity of the Fiesta Bowl...ITS ABOUT TIME STEW!!! B-
Final word. This game might be for the Big East Championship.UConns 3rd string freshman QB will obviously be playing in his biggest game. This might be Pat Whites 25/26th biggest game....maybe. Lville handed the Huskies a win on an int return with under 3 minutes to go, and they lost to the only other decent teams they faced ( UNC, Rutgers), and Baylor gave them fits .....White and Devine should chew this defense up early and often.....
Speed kills.....mix it with confidence and momentum and you got trouble.....
WV 45 UConn 17
Thoughts? Uconn fans? Haters? All welcome.

I certainly lurk in this forum, but only in threads that interest me, which is few and far between
I like West Virginia's team Train and love betting them vs. out of conference opp, but that coach disturbs me in a bad way, he is so out of place, I think you have the better team for sure and White should have a solid game, you need good field conditions for the WVU speed to have an impact, be sure to check the weather my friend |

#8 Posted: 10/27/2008 11:22:37 PM I agree wahoo, the coach is a problem. I also believe that in the bye week, something happened and he is letting the offensive and defensive coordinators do their thing, with obvious, vast improvement....I just dont think UConn will be able to contain Devine and White with that speed....and a frosh QB in this HUGE game ....he has to prove it to me 1st..... the field condition will be a big deal, and i will be sure to check the weather bro....
glad to see this is one of the threads that interests you!!!

#11 Posted: 10/28/2008 3:25:21 AM I bet against Uconn last week. Their QB didn't suck as badly as I anticipated last week. Makes me a little skidish on playing against them. WV looks pretty solid though, wish they would air the ball up a little more and even out their rush/pass ratio

#12 Posted: 10/28/2008 5:18:53 AM WVU on the road has been awful this year. This will only be their 3rd road game and conference road games against 2 fairly evenly matched teams tend to be tighter games. Key I think here is Uconn has a good secondary and can slide guys into the box here. They also have an edge w/ their dline vs WV's oline. Combine it with how inconsistent WVU has been all year while every single one of their games except for Villanova was close and Uconn looks like the play for me + the points. |

#14 Posted: 10/28/2008 8:57:45 AM I agree Train. WVA has finally showed a little chemistry; and the Coach (Stew) seems to have come to the realization that less from him... is more. The team definitely playing with more confidence.
UConn routed Cinci on Sat.; but only after Cinci went 3 + 3 in interceptions and fumbles, and got none in return. Everything else being equal... I'll give the Pts. w/ Pat White over whoever UConn comes up with at QB.

#16 Posted: 10/28/2008 9:53:29 AM Good luck Train For me personally I've won more money fading WV than I've lost this season 2-1. So I'll be on UConn and the points.

#21 Posted: 10/28/2008 12:55:57 PM WV is allowing 3.2 yards per carry this year, UConn averaging 4.9 per carry.....UConn allowing 3.6 ypc, WV averaging 6ypc....whats your point royalfan?? D Brown will probably have 150 yards on 40 carries ....thats not gonna cut it.....Pat White will approach 100 rush yards and Devine will have 150+......WV defense will be unlike anything the Huskies have seen
Now add the Pat White(71% comp, senior leader) vs Cody Endres (47% comp, freshman)........and........
UConn gets dropped

#22 Posted: 10/28/2008 1:30:37 PM Good write up, but sometimes digging too much into the stats aka Mark Lawrence means shit. I clearly think the talent is on WV's side and the line is a bit fishy for me, but I think WV wins by 2 tds. |
